To change my name from Elizabeth

God I just hate it. It sounds like lizard. It's a Christian name meaning "loved by god" and I'm a staunch atheist. It was the Queens name and I'm firmly anti royal. It was my maternal grandmothers name and she was abusive to my mum, who, in turn, has passed that trauma and abuse onto me to the point where we are no contact. Ive always been called Lisa but I don't like that much either.

I've been going by Lis, pronounced "Liss" but what can I move to? Urgh.

How about Lilibet?

Only joking! I’d recommend ‘Eliza’ or maybe ‘Lissie’ like the singer 🙂

Menopausalmum43 · 19/06/2025 01:42

Or Colin or Keith are also options:)

Delphiniumandlupins · 19/06/2025 01:58

Beth, Bethan, Bethany, Bet, Bette, Betty, Bess, Bessie, Ella, Elle. Ellie, Elspeth,
Libby, Lilibet, Lisbeth, Liz, Lizzie, Lisa, Liza

Or any other name you fancy

MagicMichaeICaine · 19/06/2025 02:10

Lizard. 🤣

I think Elizabeth is a timeless name. Classy without being too Gertrudey. I'd rather be a Beth than a Liz though.

TheOriginalEmu · 19/06/2025 02:26

Call yourself whatever you want!
Liss is great if that’s what you like.

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 19/06/2025 03:17

Ziz 🙂

Potsofpetals · 19/06/2025 03:23

My Dsis has the middle name Elizabeth. For reasons I can’t quite explain I’ve always called her by her middle name but it’s evolved over the years. Elizabeth became Lizzie which became libby. I now call her Livy. There are so many nicknames you can use.

Ger1atricMillennial · 19/06/2025 03:36

Its your name do what you want.

What name do you want?

Chat2025 · 19/06/2025 04:25

Your first sentence is that you hate your name so I would change it if you feel like that and forge a new identity. I know what PPs mean about people still using your old name sometime but they would surely get used to it. I have a cousin who changed her first name by deed poll as she didn’t like it and we have adapted although her father struggled.

or a diminutive of Elizabeth but it sounds like tiu want to get away from that.

it’s your name op but o have always liked:

Gabriela (Gaby)
Louisa
Chloe
Frances/Fran
Cate/Kate/Cat (diminutive of Catherine/Katherine?)
Isabella/ Bella
Emily/Emilie

Good luck deciding. It’s exciting!

numberonepartyanthem · 19/06/2025 05:04

Melissa
Alyssia
Alice

Offcom · 19/06/2025 05:09

I love Lily and Lillian.

But maybe you want a totally fresh start? Romana - such a brilliant Doctor Who assistant.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 19/06/2025 05:14

Well if you're already calling yourself Liss, how about Elise, Elouise or Eliza?

stample · 19/06/2025 05:42

There re so many variations of Elizabeth that I’ve known…
Liz
Lizzie/ Lizzy
Liza
Lisa
Betty
Beth
Lily
Lilybet
Lilybeth
Eliza
Libby
Izzi/ Izzy
Etta
Zaza
Bea

MaggieBsBoat · 19/06/2025 05:45

Liberty!

Do it. Find a new name which is really you! Sorry for your horrible mum experience op

IsItADream · 19/06/2025 05:50

Are you wanting suggestions for a new name or a nickname derived from Elizabeth? I know an Elisabeth who goes by ISA (pronounced Eeza - as in the last part of Louisa.

Isobel, Isabella, etc. are variants of Elizabeth.

Etta (from the Italian form Elisabetta)

Elise

Katemax82 · 19/06/2025 08:04

My daughter is Elizabeth and I nicknamed her grizzy lizzy as a baby. Now I call her griz for short (only sometimes for a laugh)

Given that our DD is Elizabeth and is quite happy with it, YABU.

On the other hand I hate my name and have never used it. Never bothered with a formal name change, however.

Call yourself what you like OP.

dudsville · 19/06/2025 08:22

Your rationale sounds like a very good basis for a name change, and in your shoes, I would go all out - really give a name you love, have a celebratory meal, and spend a day getting all your cards, emails, etc., changed!

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 19/06/2025 08:29

I understand what you mean about needing to like your name.
Do you have a middle name that you could go by instead?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/06/2025 08:33

I like Liss!

If you want to keep that try Alice, Melissa, Calista

Any name with a liss in?

TiagoOne · 19/06/2025 08:34

Felicity? Works with the shortened name.

Lonelydave · 19/06/2025 08:35

in the style of a great comic, Bob.......

EmeraldShamrock000 · 19/06/2025 08:35

Eliza, Eli, lizzy, izzy.
