To change my name from Elizabeth

God I just hate it. It sounds like lizard. It's a Christian name meaning "loved by god" and I'm a staunch atheist. It was the Queens name and I'm firmly anti royal. It was my maternal grandmothers name and she was abusive to my mum, who, in turn, has passed that trauma and abuse onto me to the point where we are no contact. Ive always been called Lisa but I don't like that much either.

I've been going by Lis, pronounced "Liss" but what can I move to? Urgh.

I think Elizabeth is absolutely beautiful, a classic European name. But if you dislike it I think Ella or Lily are good nicknames.

StopStartStop · 19/06/2025 09:52

Savannah.

Cuppa2sugars · 19/06/2025 09:53

Nobody has mentioned Bessy,.

all the Elizabeth’s at my school were called Bessy. I preferred it .Or Lizzy is nice.

My nan was always called Lilly. I never knew her birth name was Elizabeth, until i was much older, as everyone always called her Lilly, which really suited her 💐
Edited to say, my aunty's Betty was the same. I thought her name was Betty, until I was older.
Lilly and Betty are both nice names.
Or have you got a middle name?
Some men in our family were always called by their middle names instead of their first name?

aredcar · 19/06/2025 09:53

im also not a fan of liz but love Elizabeth

would you like it if it was spelt Elisabeth? I love that spelling. And it works with the nickname Liss

other Liss names I like:
Alyssa, Alicia (a-Liss-ee-ah), Ellis/Elis, Alice, Liesl, Melissa, Elsie,

I feel the same about my name but can't think of a name that is 'me.'

For things like SM (e.g. Nextdoor), I use a boring age-appropriate no-nonsense pseudonym (e.g. something like Amy Smith)

@poppymango , or the Spanish variant - Isabella. The Spanish variant ids Isabel.

Elise?

Your dad named you for a joke? Did he realise he was going to be raising an entire person or did he think a grown up would step in and issue a sensible name after 6 weeks?
I can't think of many jokes which get funnier with every passing decade.
You can change your name as an adult. It works fine. Occasionally people talk about the past and use the name the person had then, but they can use your new name now and on the future.

Possibly at 18, 19, 20 but now I am well into my forties I would feel an idiot suddenly announcing that I want to be called Sarah or something.

I'm the same. If I moved out of the area several miles away, then I would probably do it but otherwise I'm stuck with the damn name as its what I'm known as.

Topaz89 · 19/06/2025 10:04

I love your name OP. My 6 year old DD is an Elizabeth too ❤️. We usually call her by her full name but her nicknames are Betty and Lizzie-loo.
If you don’t like it of course you can change it to absolutely anything you want.

I know someone called Elaine who hates her name. She goes by Elly. You could do similar.

I like the name Elizabeth myself but it's really up to you, it's your name :)

I do too i wonder if it's the same one 🤔

Goditsmemargaret · 19/06/2025 10:08

Betty

Todayisaday · 19/06/2025 10:08

Complete change, I know someone eho had a very boring traditional name and changed it by depol. Names changed but it was like, Victoria changed to Electra. Everyone just accepted it and thats her name now!

IdLikeABackMassage · 19/06/2025 10:09

Do it OP!

I changed my first and last name at age 49, also as part of recovery from an abusive childhood. I wanted to rid myself of the cruel labels that had been attached to it.

I was shy to tell people but everyone's been great! (only a very few people know the real reason though)

I went with a name I've always liked from a book I love.

I love Calista! Mediterranean

if I met someone called ‘Liss’ I’d think it was short for Alicia - do you like that name?

cryptide · 19/06/2025 10:16

Why fixate on two people called Elizabeth who you don't like? Think about other Elizabeths - Elizabeth Fry, Elizabeth Bennett, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Midler ...

PinkBobby · 19/06/2025 10:17

You should get the Kinder app - you just swipe through a ton of names and save the ones you like. I think changing your name is such an empowering moment - congratulations and good luck choosing one!

Paoo · 19/06/2025 10:19

Do it! Changing my name was such a relieving thing for me, like you some abuse issues and it just felt like a weight off my shoulders choosing my name rather than the one she gave me. Very easy to do to officially, just need a free deed poll template.

Changed18 · 19/06/2025 10:20

My grandma with your name was known as Bessie.

MyDeftDuck · 19/06/2025 10:21

Informally, we can ask to be called by whatever we like. Formal changes need to be made via deed poll.

As a little girl I wanted to be named Patsy………why, I just can’t understand and now it just conjures up images of Patsy on Absolutely Fabulous played by the even more fabulous Joanna Lumley. Thankfully my parents refused to change my name 😂

hotpotlover · 19/06/2025 10:26

Aww that's a shame.

My 18 month old daughter is called Elisabeth.

It's a really pretty name and suits her very well.

columnatedruinsdomino · 19/06/2025 10:27

The same name as the most beloved character in literature and you want to change it?! 😀Elizabeth Bennett was also known as Eliza or Lizzy but as others have said there are lots of permutations and they can’t all have bad connotations.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 19/06/2025 10:27

Yep change it - you list many valid reasons. I never knew what bothered be about Elizabeth and now I totally agree - it’s the lizard factor.

Maybe change your name to Ella or your middle name or something entirely different. I would feel like an international white collar criminal changing my name entirely but you could.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 19/06/2025 10:28

LOVE Bessie suggestion !
