To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

This mumsnet chestnut again: “the OP could just google it!”

Here is why people don’t want to google:
Google replies are likely to be AI generated, and probably more biased towards the status quo, which is (to many people) that JK is evil. If the boss of google believes that (I don’t know if it’s true), then the replies will probably reflect that.

Asking on mumsnet brings (I hope) mostly real replies from real people.

Ok.

so You agree. Transwomen are men? Or do you have an issue with that?

I don’t care enough about the statement to have an opinion either way.

I just wanted to make clear that PP was lying.

Missey85 · 16/06/2025 10:49

She is a feminist just for real women and that pisses off the fake women 😆

JHound · 16/06/2025 10:51

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/06/2025 09:19

It’s so not comparable.

Has anyone, as an adult, faced discrimination for ‘not’ having sexual feelings towards other adults, like people have for being same sex attracted?

Lots of things are not relevant to lots of people. Mature Adults learn to ignore that which is not relevant to them and let others to whom it is relevant engage with it.

I wish those who regularly wade onto threads discussing JKR/women’s rights/men who say they are women going into spaces they shouldn’t, with ‘it doesn’t bother me! You’re all anti-trans’ and the like would apply this. And hide the ‘trans’ threads like they said they would.

Are awareness days just about discrimination?

It’s perfectly comparable in terms of raising awareness of something which does impact the lives of individuals and people they form partnerships with.
I maintain her post getting whiney about that (as well as being clearly misinformed) was weird.

If something is not for you - ignore it. Especially when it literally is not harming anybody.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/06/2025 10:52

Let's call it what it is: attention seeking.

If you don't care about what a woman is, what are you doing on a feminist forum?

Afewtimesagain · 16/06/2025 10:57

I love JK, she is a feminist. The people who don't think she is a feminist are those who think humans can change sex and that women should give up our rights for those who believe wishes impact biology and magically transform men into women.

I don’t think she was being ‘whiny’ or ‘huffy’ at all, just calling out something that she, and many others, don’t feel there’s a need to have a day of awareness about. Not everything needs a day of awareness. Where does it end? That doesn’t equate to not caring that being asexual might be bothersome to some.

If a TRA posted the same tweet I’d bet my last mars bar that they wouldn’t be called whiny or huffy.

Yep, and regularly post on these threads that they seemingly have no interest in.

Ok.

We don’t have to agree do we. Nor do we need to dictate to strangers what they can and cannot benefit from.

JKR didn’t do that though did she. She expressed her own opinion. That’s what Twitter/X whatever it’s called now is for.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/06/2025 14:19

Feminism is not one single thing. There are different views within feminism.

Surely you haven't missed her conflict with the transgender community?

JKR is a trans-exclusionary feminist, I'm a trans-exclusionary feminist. There isn't just one set of beliefs, people disagree.

Do you mean by this that you and she support female only spaces? Just making sure of my terminology!

(although imo saying what we do and do not need is dictating to people what they should and should not take benefit from.)

I googled something the other day, for medical school btw, before anyone accuses me of being obsessed by genitals. The topic was the ligaments between the urethra and the pelvic floor. Low and behold, the AI answer proceeded to tell me that the urethra was connected to the vagina…

Helleofabore · 16/06/2025 11:20

Have we got the examples of JK Rowling 'bullying' specific people?

Or is it really just that JK Rowling has not been kind to abusive male people who have abused her directly? Some of which have made her the focus of their abusiveness now for a very long time to boost their own engagement figures or to get applause from others?

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 16/06/2025 11:22

scalt · 16/06/2025 07:31

Those saying “it’s complicated” might be mocking Harry saying that to Griphook in the final film; and Griphook repeats this line back to Harry. (I don’t know if JK wrote the screenplay of the final film.) Also, many of the haters probably haven’t seen the films, or even read the books.

I laughed at reafing that the haters hate her because she didn’t invent the concept of houses. A magic school is also not her invention - Jill Murphy’s “The Worst Witch” is old enough to be Harry’s mother, she pre-dates him by a quarter of a century.

Well quite. But apparently anyone who thinks her books are original is thick because she just ripped off The Worst Witch, despite them being nothing alike. Other than the magic school part. And I don't think Jill Murphy was the first person to write about such things either.

Helleofabore · 16/06/2025 11:23

I find there is a huge amount of misinformation on google. When I google something that I want to check, I can go pages with misinformation or carefully curated information rates highly on search engine optimisation but is full of false information.

I no longer tend to tend google at face value, just like wiki.

StandFirm · 16/06/2025 11:26

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 15/06/2025 18:42

Why do we need to be aware of people who aren't having sex?

Because it is a sexual orientation and more than the sexual equivalent of 'dry January'. It is something that is not much understood and that people get bullied over, like with any other difference in fact, because our society is still so incredibly normative.

DunnoMate · 16/06/2025 11:32

I’ve only read the first page of posts but @laughingnow i had the same confusion/ question as you.

I live abroad and not on twitter so seem to out of the loop a bit but have been equally baffled by the vitriol towards JKR. And even more so when friends (whose opinions and views I generally respect) seem to also think ages abhorrent.

When I read a few articles etc in the whole thing I couldn’t fathom what she’d done wrong and am in agreement with her views. I think there’s a name, with special abbreviations, that I would now be labeled. Im certainly not transphobic, but I as a mother to 2 girls, I will not let their rights dwindle and all the efforts of those who’ve stood up for women in the past go to waste.

Meanttobeworking · 16/06/2025 11:38

Can’t believe the trouble this woman got into for insisting women should be called women.

i mean that’s literally all she did.

Helleofabore · 16/06/2025 11:47

I have been searching for tweets that would support the claims that she is bullying specific people and I cannot find any that is not her pushing back on abusive male people who have directly abused her.

If people are making these claims, please can you list examples of those so we can all see.

Otherwise I think it is becoming apparent that those making those accusations are inadvertently supporting abusive male people in their abuse of JK Rowling and of other women.
