Menopause - how old were you?

Just that really - I know we're all very different but I wanted to ask, what age did you start menopause (or peri) & then how long after did you totally stop having periods?

I'm 41. Zero symptoms yet, regular periods.

I have Endometriosis and Adenomyosis (yay) and have been offered a hysterectomy. I'd rather wait for my natural menopause than go through surgery for my periods to stop, but realistically how much longer have I got?

49

NImumconfused · 14/06/2025 20:06

53 and 54 respectively.

Cynic17 · 14/06/2025 20:07

Periods stopped at 56 (having started again at 48, due to a separate iissue). No other symptoms.

BakelikeBertha · 14/06/2025 20:08

I think the average age is 51 OP, which is exactly when I actually started mine.

WorkingNotTwerking · 14/06/2025 20:10

Perimenopause and menopause are two different things.

I started getting very severe perimenopausal symptoms at about 44. I've not hit menopause yet and I'm 49 now.

soontobeconfirmed · 14/06/2025 20:10

Pei at 44/45. Not hit menopause yet.

CatMum27 · 14/06/2025 20:13

Started perimenopause at 39. Still waiting for menopause to kick in but an early change runs in the family.

WorkingNotTwerking · 14/06/2025 20:13

Yes 51 is the average but it does vary wildly of course; it's not unusual to still be having periods at 55.

JockyWilsonsaid · 14/06/2025 20:14

Peri - 34
Total hysterectomy - 47 due to excessive bleeding and adenomyosis.

WilfredsPies · 14/06/2025 20:15

Peri started at 41. I’m getting on for 50 and there’s no end in sight.

Nevertrustacop · 14/06/2025 20:16
  1. All done.
Endeavour1971 · 14/06/2025 20:17

54 next week and still no signs of either. My mum was the same apparently, periods just stopped one day and that was that!

WheresthesaladTheresthesalad · 14/06/2025 20:17

Into menopause at only 23 then hysterectomy and oopherectomy at age 27 due to endometriosis and adenomyosis. Was tough.

NotTerfNorCis · 14/06/2025 20:22
  1. Having a really easy time of it so far.
BlondieMuver · 14/06/2025 20:23

Symptoms started at 42. Periods stopped 6 months later

KnittingOnEmpty · 14/06/2025 21:08

Periods stopped at 51. Hadn't heard of peri .. but looking back I had erratic periods (flooding etc) from 46ish. Menopause education seemed to pass me by ..had no idea it was a process. I just thought periods stopped and that was that!

LiquoriceStick · 14/06/2025 21:11

Thanks all.

Mentally, I could cope with another 5 years of debilitating periods but not 10.

My periods run my life. Maybe I will opt for surgery.

elQuintoConyo · 14/06/2025 21:16

Peri started in 2019, at 50 I'm still in the thick of it and it's killing me. I've had no period since December last year. I'm abroad and unlikely to get hrt as they hate giving it out. My mum was fully in menopause by 47,my sister's had a hysterectomy, so bypassed it. I think you're supposed to hit it at a similar age to your mother/GM.

I just want the hot flushes, insomnia, brain fog and intense rage to fuck off. I have teenagers and I teach teenagers; the sheer effort it takes to keep control of my words and my face (cos it speaks volumes!) is wearing me down.

venusandmars · 14/06/2025 21:24

@LiquoriceStick My periods didn't stop till 56 (with one surprise period on holiday 2 years later). If I'd known that I would have had a hysterectomy at 40. Things just got worse and worse. I'd projectile vomit with the pain, the blood loss was horrendous.

SabbatWheel · 14/06/2025 21:25

Started 41, finished 46.

ToffeePennie · 14/06/2025 21:27

I’m going through perimenopause now at 36, symptoms started last year at 35. But I started my periods at 8, so I think that’s reasonable.
However, I’m bleeding like crazy all the time….

Groovee · 14/06/2025 21:28

Probably about age 32. Around 37 had surgery as my periods were frequent and my iron was so low.

Then after a tonne of tests at 45, a GP joined the dots and realised I was in perimenopause. Not had a period cycle since June last year. But a lot of things make sense now. My mum and gran were through it by 47.

2025mustbebetter · 14/06/2025 21:28

Started peri symptoms at 40. Still having periods 47

Zofloramummy · 14/06/2025 21:31

Started 44 finished 49.

ninjahamster · 14/06/2025 21:35

I’m 51, no sign yet. My mum was 58 and my sister 57 when their periods stopped.
