Menopause - how old were you?

Just that really - I know we're all very different but I wanted to ask, what age did you start menopause (or peri) & then how long after did you totally stop having periods?

I'm 41. Zero symptoms yet, regular periods.

I have Endometriosis and Adenomyosis (yay) and have been offered a hysterectomy. I'd rather wait for my natural menopause than go through surgery for my periods to stop, but realistically how much longer have I got?

52

Before that, periods had been irregular for some years. Few symptoms really, aches and pains, terrible insomnia. Got through it without medication.

duckydoo234 · 15/06/2025 00:33

Peri around 43. THE RAGE, THE RAGE, but otherwise no major physical symptoms that evening primrose didn't deal with. Periods stopped abruptly at 48. On HRT now, some periodic bleeding, but feeling fantastic!

NCTDN · 15/06/2025 00:35

52 and no signs of anything yet. It’s the one part of my body that seems to be young!

CautiousLurker01 · 15/06/2025 01:09

Not sure when entered peri as didn’t really have any symptoms (that I noticed… DH may disagree). Last period was just before I turned 53. At that point did get the hot flushes, irritability (no fucks to give anyone for anything), sleeplessness and anorgasmia. Started bHRT recently, though (9wks) and do feel better, so would recommend exploring that when the time comes rather than muscling through.

ScruffMuffin · 15/06/2025 01:30

I'm 48 and not in peri yet.

bridgetreilly · 15/06/2025 01:32

Menopause is when you stop having periods (for 12 months). I started peri at 40, menopause at 48. Still having symptoms, even with HRT, at 51.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 15/06/2025 01:35

Menopause at 51.

Peri? Who knows. Everything is peri these days. My periods were awful from early 30s (when I finished having babies) and just got worse and worse until they stopped. I went a bit crackers in my late 40s and I'm sure my hormones didn't help but I was also solo parenting teenagers during lockdown and a toxic, protracted divorce.

Lankyboxx · 15/06/2025 01:48

BedBathAndBeyonce · 15/06/2025 16:42

Peri symptoms at 44. HRT helping massively with brain fog, incontinence, UTIs, itching, anxiety/dread and insomnia. Still cycling regularly at nearly 47.

whatisforteamum · 16/06/2025 05:19

51 symptoms impaired my life.Probably had symptoms before but I never heard of perimenopause.
Flooding periods early 40s though.

spoonbillstretford · 16/06/2025 05:36
  1. I was diagnosed with endometrosis at 39.
pinkstripeycat · 16/06/2025 05:42

I’m still perimenopausal at 53. Started at around 48. Can’t take HRT as it makes my migraines worse. Have crippling anxiety (never had before) and 2 periods a months. Was on the mini pill for 17 years with no periods so having periods again is not fun.

My sister didn’t have any perimenopausal symptoms and her periods stopped at 52

Flamingoknees · 16/06/2025 05:58
  1. 56 now, it's about 6 months since my last period. Hot flushes are bad at the moment,I keep thinking they've gone. Don't know about peri.
cryinglaughing · 16/06/2025 06:03

Started at 48.
Last period at 55.
Apart from the odd bout of sleeping problems and a few hot flushes it has been fine.

crossstitchingnana · 16/06/2025 12:57

I noticed more anxiety at 40 and changes like less body hair and menopause was 47. It was then that the flushes, difficulty sleeping, crashingly low libido, palpitations, vaginal dryness etc started.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/06/2025 13:03

I started getting perimenopause symptoms at 43. Then periods became very infrequent and irregular. Am on HRT now and I’m 47. Not out the other side just yet.

familyissues12345 · 16/06/2025 13:12

It’s interesting, I’d say I was peri now aged 44 - aching joints, awful periods (flooding), erratic cycle, brain fog - but my GP ruled it out, saying I was too young Confused

My mum was 52 when periods ended

WorkingNotTwerking · 16/06/2025 13:30

@familyissues12345 your GP was wrong.

mondaytosunday · 16/06/2025 13:33

I think irregular periods (my only symptom luckily) started at about 53? Last period at 56. I was dreading it as my mother had an awful time with it but it was smooth sailing.

RebelliousHoping · 16/06/2025 13:47

My Mum had a hysterectomy at 53 over a decade ago for a small polyp with a shadow behind it as time (suspect cancer) and got told no sign of nearing menopause in the tests they do post surgery. Mum started her periods late on though at 16 and refused HRT and as she points out the only family member not on cocktail of medication so there is hope after full hysterectomy. Lucky woman.

I hope not to go down same route. In peri possibly but no tests to confirm under 45. I started my periods aged 10 but I think 51 could be right to hit meno from what has been experienced so far.

Belladog1 · 16/06/2025 13:49

I think I was peri around age 46. At 50 the periods stopped. After not having one for 7 months, I've just gone onto HRT due to the hot sweats

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/06/2025 16:56

Menopause was 50ish. I didn't have any symptoms. I hardly ever had periods before that due to the Mirena coil but I did have a couple of very strange periods at about 49.

Your GP sounds dismissive, and wrong. Perimenopause can begin several years before actual menopause.

Why do some GPs talk such bollocks? Thankfully mine was not dismissive like that.

LadyHexham · 17/06/2025 08:36

I was 46.
It's fab not having periods.

I woke up a bit warm 2 nights a month for 6 months and that was it.
Don't take any medication.

I know I had it very easy.
