Menopause - how old were you?

Just that really - I know we're all very different but I wanted to ask, what age did you start menopause (or peri) & then how long after did you totally stop having periods?

I'm 41. Zero symptoms yet, regular periods.

I have Endometriosis and Adenomyosis (yay) and have been offered a hysterectomy. I'd rather wait for my natural menopause than go through surgery for my periods to stop, but realistically how much longer have I got?

OP posts:

I'm 49 and in peri. I have 4 sisters - 3 weren't through menopause till late 50's, one (and my mum) had a hysterectomy. I'm expecting late 50's too.

romany4 · 17/06/2025 08:55

46 for Peri..Utter rage. Aching joints. Disturbed sleep. Anxiety through the roof. Flooding periods every 21 days..
I'm 53 now. Periods are light. Every 6 months ish
Started HRT last year due to awful brain fog and migraines..
Should (hopefully) finish periods before I'm 54.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/12/2025 00:37

Totally clockwork periods until 51. then stopped. Next week I’m officially post menopause! Fingers crossed that’s it!

Sharpzebra · 31/12/2025 01:25

I'm 39 just having early peri symptoms can't wait for them to stop now though 😣

Endeavour1971 · 14/06/2025 20:17

54 next week and still no signs of either. My mum was the same apparently, periods just stopped one day and that was that!

Mine was like that. Just stopped suddenly at 57, no noticeable peri leading up to it.

The hot flushes were brutal, though, as soon as my periods stopped, so got on HRT right away.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 31/12/2025 01:39

Not sure. I took the combined pill from 17 to 34 (apart from when ttc/in pregnancy) then had the copper coil. I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 39 after having ovary pain, hot flushes and IBS and had the coil and bilateral cysts removed with as much tissue as he could without damaging the bowel or bladder it was all over. Then I went on the mini pill until about 46/47. Started to feel the effect of low oestrogen - vulva/vaginal symptoms mainly and lack of energy. Went back on the combined pill as I'd had no endometriosis issues in all and read I could take it until the age of 50 - this sorted out the low oestrogen issues. Then at 49 I stopped taking anything at all to see if my periods had stopped naturally. At 50 I've had no periods for a year, so I guess this is it. What is odd is that so far I've had no other symptoms other than a bit of brain fog and feel great, better than since my early 30s. I'm thinking about HRT but am not on anything yet.

  1. One day my periods just stopped. No symptoms before or after. Doctor did a test.

  1. With a toddler. 0/10 Do not recommend
Thursa · 31/12/2025 02:55

I had PCOS. Didn’t have regular, unmedicated periods till my late 40’s. Had my last period at 55, then a last surprise one almost a year later. I had few menopause symptoms.

somethingbeginningwithb · 31/12/2025 02:58

I've no idea whether I've gone through menopause or not as I take the progesterone pill for adenomyosis, stemming constant bleeding to nothing for years now.

foxlover47 · 31/12/2025 03:14

Peri from 48 and I’m 51 , thought maybe menopause happened as hadn’t had a period for months , this past two weeks have been bleeding pretty regular
gutted

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 31/12/2025 03:23

No symptoms at all. Periods just stopped at 51.

Gowlett · 31/12/2025 03:28

Perimenopause at 47, still going on…

MikeRafone · 31/12/2025 04:01

47 and all over in a year

HilaryThorpe · 31/12/2025 04:02

Hysterectomy without removal of ovaries, at 42. Multiple, severe menopause symptoms started at 50, lasted 12 years. Had HRT for a couple of years, then it was refused from early 2000s because of the dodgy American research.

Kazzaa46 · 31/12/2025 05:44

My Mum and older sister both went through menopause at 51.
I’m 46 and definitely in peri (hot flushes, brain fog, light periods) but I feel like menopause is likely still a few years away for me.

Augustus40 · 31/12/2025 06:35

I was three months off 57 before my periods stopp ed!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 31/12/2025 07:11

I noticed peri symptoms started when I was 44, still regular periods but my anxiety sky rocketed at the time I didn't know why. Periods started going haywire at 45 and the anxiety made sense, then came the brain fog.

At 48, periods are still all over the place but are regular if that makes sense. Anxiety rears its ugly head every few months and I get so much rage. I have the odd hot flush and brain fog. My hair started thinning last year too.

Disturbia81 · 31/12/2025 07:15

Could you just have your womb out OP, that’s what I did. Best thing I ever did and I wish more women could have it done easily. Keeping the ovaries keeps the hormones so you just go through peri when you were meant to.
Though I know endometriosis affects ovaries too so doctor might not let you keep them

RampantIvy · 31/12/2025 07:16

Peri at 47 - hot flushes and migraines. No other symptoms.
Last period at 50.

SleepQuest33 · 31/12/2025 07:30

I am not sure when exactly perimenopause started but I think around 45 (perhaps sooner). I never had the hot flushes but lots of anxiety, insomnia, brain fog.

periods stopped at 50 😊 brilliant!

bugalugs45 · 31/12/2025 07:59

148 days since my last period . Am just 47 , a few hot flushes & my sleep is suffering a bit , but all started this year. Nothing unmanageable as yet .

muddyford · 31/12/2025 08:02

Peri (which wasn't really a thing then) by 37/8, finished everything by 45.

Periperi2025 · 31/12/2025 08:07

In hindsight i first saw the gp with symptoms at 33 (new fatigue, weight gain, vaginal dryness, heat intolerance etc) was fobbed off for years (had a 'peri menopause' baby in this time at 36) eventually was at rocked bottom at 42 with insanely low oestrogen and started on HRT, told that i was going to have an early menopause. I'm on a lot of HRT including the mirena but I'm confident I'm still ovulating every so often, and I'm now a month off turning 45, in which case it will go down as a 'normal' menopause age wise.

guestusername · 31/12/2025 08:08

I think I was peri from early to mid 30’s. Fully post menopausal at 42.

My periods were horrendous (thanks endo) but barely manageable on the pill. When I came off it, they just slowed down in flow and pain for about 6 months until they stopped completely. GP initially refused to believe that i was post menopausal as I was “too young” despite it being all over my notes that early menopause runs early in my family!
