Menopause - how old were you?

Just that really - I know we're all very different but I wanted to ask, what age did you start menopause (or peri) & then how long after did you totally stop having periods?

I'm 41. Zero symptoms yet, regular periods.

I have Endometriosis and Adenomyosis (yay) and have been offered a hysterectomy. I'd rather wait for my natural menopause than go through surgery for my periods to stop, but realistically how much longer have I got?

52 for menopause.
dunno for peri, there wasn’t a point (like meno) where I could tick the calendar as the start of peri. I went through an awful divorce in my early/mid 40s, then went on to develop an eating disorder. There was never any suggestion that the depression, sleep problems and mood changes could have been linked to peri.
I did have aches and pains and a noticeable decline in my sporting performance (I’m a keen and competitive runner), which has lifted now.

I am 50 and still have a period every month. My cycle has become shorter although the last one was longer by 2 weeks so maybe I’m not becoming irregular. I have no idea when I started peri but I’ve recently started to have some hot flushes. My sleep changed about a year ago now I wake up super early and I feel a bit more anxious about certain things than I did before but I wouldn’t say that I have bad symptoms. I can’t wait for my periods to stop completely I am so over the whole thing now.

SheSpendsAFortune · 31/12/2025 08:33

I was 52 when the menopause began. I had a horrendous time - flooding, huge clots, etc. I was almost 60 when my periods stopped (59 and 1/2)

itsthetea · 31/12/2025 08:48

The average age is 51

edit to add with synonyms starting I think up to 5 years earlier on average ( less clear data )

ScruffMuffin · 01/01/2026 10:07

I'm 48 and no changes as yet. My sister is a bit younger and has been in peri for a while - now on hormones. I asked my mum when she went through the menopause, and she said late 40s. So I think my sister is probably going to follow her, and I'm going to be later for some reason.

Sahara123 · 01/01/2026 10:12

No idea ! Had a Mirena coil for extreme periods which stopped after about a year completely, so it had no idea what was happening. GP did a blood test one day and decided I was done , coil out, no problems. I so feel for all of you who have awful problems but wanted to offer balance that it might be ok.

rafeal · 01/01/2026 10:25

49 and I was the first of my same-age friends.

W0tnow · 01/01/2026 10:27

It’s really, really hard to say. Periods stopped at maybe 51? But I had frozen shoulder at 41, and chronically bad sleep from maybe 48? After previously sleeping at an elite level all my life.

Hellohelga · 01/01/2026 10:27

Peri 48
Meno 53

Alpacajigsaw · 01/01/2026 10:30

I don’t think 41 is old not to be in peri. I do roll my eyes a bit when I see women in their mid/late 30s claiming to be peri. Seems to be the current trendy thing to say. I reckon I was around 43/44 when I started peri and had my last period at 50, 2 years ago. It’s bloody lovely being done with them.

Magpiecomplex · 01/01/2026 10:30

Started at 36. 16 years later, I'm still in peri.

Most women are about the same age as their mums when their periods stop apparently, unless theres medical issues that the mum didnt have.

You are not guaranteed to have similar experience to your mother.

My mum had very light painless periods, then went into very early menopause with horrific symptoms from her 30s, and had developed severe osteoporosis by 40. She was put on long term HRT so continued to have bleeds into her late 50s.

I had horrific painful heavy periods all my life, but then had absolutely no peri symptoms at all, my periods just stopped one day aged 49. Thank fuck for that!

Wiseplumant · 01/01/2026 10:59

Surprise period at 59, after nearly a year without. Fully menopaused now at 61.

Jaffapedigree · 01/01/2026 11:14

I'm 50, but still on the mini pill due to horrendous periods. I was on the regular pill most of my adult life and haven't had a period since my mid twenties. Quite frankly, I'm dreading the day that the doc refuses to continue my prescription as I've been blissfully period free for so long, and don't know how bad they'll be if they return. I've had just a bit of brain fog recently, and some depression and anxiety, so I might be starting to go through it. Or, it could have been happening for years but with far subtler symptoms?

W0tnow · 01/01/2026 15:00

Please be advised that this is my regular ‘get your bone density tested’ plea that I post on all menopause related threads 😜

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 01/01/2026 15:05

Peri at 46, menopause at 53. I had horrendous symptoms in peri menopause but didn't even know what it was. I wish more than anything that I had started HRT. I waited until I was 55 and by then had every symptom under the sun. My quality of life had reduced so much I was desperate.

mummytrex · 01/01/2026 15:12

No peri signs but had total hysterectomy due to adeno and endometrial hyperplasia with atypia = instant menopause.

665theneighborofthebeast · 01/01/2026 15:39

34 Peri.
Hrt rocked me backwards and forwards on that fence for 20 + years.
I may not be sane at this point.
