Will these balloons ruin my wedding?

I am getting married in a historic, landmark in Aug. The venue has been quite strict on the things they will allow. It has been annoying at times but it’s a compromise we have to accept.

I want to add a fun element to the disco. I have found these balloons and think they are perfect. I showed the venue wedding coordinator and they said they’ve had bad experiences with balloons (wtf?) in the past so “they wouldn’t”. I feel this is overly dramatic. How hot can it get? It’s a medium sized period room (enough space for 85 people to dance).

The party room is going to be very low lit with up lights. I think the led balloons will be just right.

Do you think the venue is being ridiculous?

Theyre obviously not keen on you having them so are making up some excuse that they’ve had problems in the past. They just don’t want them.

You have to remember that photographs of their venue will be taken and they may very well not want to be associated with tacky decor. It could put off potential customers.

SchrodingersTwat2 · 16/05/2025 18:10

2 out of 3 in my family are allergic to latex so they're just balls of anaphylaxis to us.

And they look silly.

Isouf · 16/05/2025 18:12

You: asks for opinions 'will these balloons ruin my wedding'
PP: yes, they tacky.
You: dont be like that, respect my taste

🤣🤣🤣
Happy wedding!

Japanesemapletree · 16/05/2025 18:15

Tacky and bad for environmental and possible fire hazard.
I went to a wedding once where there were lots of UV glow sticks for the disco. Hardly any of them worked and they just ended up on the floor. People spent longer trying to get them to work than actually dancing. There must have been boxes and boxes of them that went to waste.
If you've paid for a fancy venue why cover it up with plastic balloons? I bet the room has beautiful architecture people would wow at.

Will these balloons ruin my wedding?
Yes!

agreed

BobbyBiscuits · 16/05/2025 18:19

I don't mind the white ones. As long as they aren't banning them outright just ask for their concerns, say you've acknowledged them and still decided you want to get them.

I guess the popped balloons could get stuck in places it's hard to reach? And go outside of your wedding area?

godsmessage · 16/05/2025 18:33

I think they’re pretty! But I think you should be really clear with them that you’re planning on filling them with helium and have them on the ceiling (apologies if you already have!). I actually think that would look really fun, but in a historic room with high ceilings, getting them down could be a nightmare. They may well be fine with it but I think it would be unfair to go ahead and do it without making absolutely sure they understand that they’re going on the ceiling as opposed to tied to chairs etc. Otherwise you could leave them in a right pickle struggling to get them down before the next event.

Sunholidays · 16/05/2025 18:45

Someone up thread said that she had balloons at her DD party and they popped due to the heat. is that the kind of feedback you're looking for OP? experiences with balloons at parties?

pictoosh · 16/05/2025 19:00

skymagentatwo · 16/05/2025 18:04

Wow if you want a council chav wedding, then I'm sure Kevin and Perry might come to hold some balloons too, other wise it would be soo unfair 😂

Honestly the only people who leave and say oohh I wish they had more balloons will be the people sarcastically taking the piss on their way home.

Nice venue tacky balloons, erm nope.

Did it make you feel good to type that?

Pricelessadvice · 16/05/2025 19:09

The sooner helium balloons are banned, the better.
We have a farm and are often finding balloons (or Chinese lanterns!) stuck in hedges and in our fields, terrifying our horses.
The risk to wildlife is huge, yet selfish humans only care about their own enjoyment, as always.

butteredhorseradish · 16/05/2025 19:14

What's the issue with the balloons and the heat?
You keep saying they said it's because of the heat but why is that a problem?

Toptotoe · 16/05/2025 19:31

imho they are very tacky and balloons in general environmentally unsound.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/05/2025 19:36

I think @Plickers wants to know if the balloons will burst or deflate or otherwise malfunction in the heat, which would spoil her aesthetic for her wedding, not do MNers actually like the idea of the balloons.

They wouldn’t be my choice, especially in a historic venue, but it’s not my wedding, and if she and her fiancé like the idea, I’m not going to criticise them for it - it’s their choice.

I think @Plickers needs to clarify with the venue why the balloons won’t work in the heat, and if they will all deflate immediately, or if they will pop in the heat, she will have to decide if it’s worth the risk.

I do accept that there are serious environmental and sustainability concerns with balloons, disposable lights etc.

So many killjoys here. Landfill this, dead animals that. Finite medical resources being used up. Health and safety. Yawn. This is OP's Big Day we're taking about. They look so fun, you should get shit loads of them!

(Not sure if I need some sort of sarcasm emoji...)

So what if it’s the OP’s Big Day? A big heap of needless landfill crap doesn’t know whether it’s someone’s wedding decor or a random balloon arch to advertise a sale at Homebase.

FusionChefGeoff · 16/05/2025 19:47

A high ceiling with 85 people in it will get very hot! Heat rises remember - and then will get trapped up there - have you been into your loft on a warm day?? They will start bursting.

I wasn't serious. I think helium balloons should be banned. This sort of crap being manufactured, transported across the globe and bought for a few hours use before being sent straight to landfill (best case, littering/killing wildlife worst case) makes me sick.

Poppy123xyz · 16/05/2025 19:51

It's to go to landfill or pollute water/nature. And tacky, I would be so quick to leave a space like that.

Even if you didn't read that poster's sarcasm she literally said it needed a sarcasm emoji. Not sure how you could miss that.

You keep saying they said it's because of the heat but why is that a problem?

Thermal expansion. Room full of hot sweaty people and lights. Heats up the balloons. The helium in the balloons expands with the heat, stretches the latex and the balloons pop. Causes a mess and looks shit.

DrPrunesqualer · 16/05/2025 20:19

Plickers · 16/05/2025 14:37

I bought some to test and had no problem whatsoever. I obviously can’t replicate a room with 80 people giving off body heat in Aug

Helium and heat are not a good combination

Orangeoranges42 · 16/05/2025 20:40

I like them. Just check them out in the flesh before the day to check the quality etc

AutumnalPuffin · 16/05/2025 20:44

I like them and I think you’re right - people will have more fun in an environment that reminds them of a club so I think these are perfect!

londongirl12 · 16/05/2025 20:53

If it’s an elegant room, then keep it that way! No one cares about the decor once the party starts.
