Will these balloons ruin my wedding?

I am getting married in a historic, landmark in Aug. The venue has been quite strict on the things they will allow. It has been annoying at times but it’s a compromise we have to accept.

I want to add a fun element to the disco. I have found these balloons and think they are perfect. I showed the venue wedding coordinator and they said they’ve had bad experiences with balloons (wtf?) in the past so “they wouldn’t”. I feel this is overly dramatic. How hot can it get? It’s a medium sized period room (enough space for 85 people to dance).

The party room is going to be very low lit with up lights. I think the led balloons will be just right.

Do you think the venue is being ridiculous?

I like balloons like that as long as they are stylish looking ones. The ones in the first pic are not nice looking.

Where did she ask your opinion? Did your mother not teach you any manners?
Op I think they’re lovely, I would ask what the issues are exactly if they’re advising against them

I honestly don’t mind. I am leaning into that disco/club vibe. I want the room to be very dark with fun lighting. I’m happy with my choice! We will have fun light accessories too. The horror!

Surely its a health and safety thing?

I've seen videos of similar, helium balloons and when they got to the ceiling, they set off the fire sprinkler system!

wowwhataday · 16/05/2025 14:41

Saying it kindly, maybe you’ve gone for the wrong venue? Sounds like something more modern would’ve been better and more accommodating

ThatShyRoseViper · 16/05/2025 14:38

That’s the vibe of every disco.

Well not every wedding reception. Some people have regular lighting. I want it to be VERY dramatic

They said they’ve had bad experiences in the past with the heat. But people have balloons in Texas in Summer, surely

Guaranteed venues in Texas would have AC in the summer. Does she mean they’d pop, or sink down?

Jk987 · 16/05/2025 14:44

I like them but if the venue say no it’s a no.

Todayisaday · 16/05/2025 14:45

I like them. I would think the only reasonable excuse is fire hazard. Ask them what the bad experiences were?

YoungSoak · 16/05/2025 14:46

Are the leds a fire hazard I wonder? Feeling old and sensible with that question

Theseventhmagpie · 16/05/2025 14:48

I love these balloons and think the venue is being overly precious.

ParmaVioletTea · 16/05/2025 14:48

Your going to put that sort of tat in a beautiful historic room? Why not just have your reception at the local village hall or pub?

NamelessNancy · 16/05/2025 14:48

Not what you're asking but are they reusable? Never seen led balloons before. Awful for the environment surely if not?

Because not everyone had the same opinion and tastes as you? I think they’re pretty. And I must be super tacky as I prefer the multi coloured ones :)

LostMySocks · 16/05/2025 14:53

I suspect the issue is people inhaling the helium or taking them outside which depending on the venue could be an issue if they then fly away (eg risk to wild/zoo/farm animals)

Hadjab · 16/05/2025 14:53

Just a word of caution OP - it’s extremely difficult to get the lights to look nice and even.

RumAndDietCoke · 16/05/2025 14:54

I think they’re naff as hell. Honestly, save your money. No-one is going to be gushing over your balloons in years to come.

I think the juxtaposition of elegant room and the “tacky balloons” gives a cool, fun and understated vibe.

Retro disco! Let your hair down! Grab a free drink and do the robot 🤣

We had helium balloons at DD’s birthday party on a 30+ degree day and they all popped. The shop warned me. Like you I was dismissive thinking it’s not Texas etc etc. but I was most definitely wrong! Thankfully it was only a couple of cheap ones for a kids party. If the venue has air conditioning and they’ll be inside out of direct sun maybe they’ll be ok but otherwise I probably wouldn’t chance it.

Mulledjuice · 16/05/2025 14:55

From Light in the box? Are they even safe?

I agree you need to ask the venue what their concern is.

A fire at your reception isn't a fun vibe.

Plickers · 16/05/2025 14:55

I think of to was a fire risk the reception would say no. We aren’t able to do candles for that reason

GoKatForDinner · 16/05/2025 14:56

If you want them, and they're not outright banning them, I'd go ahead.

Having said that, personally, I wouldn't bother with balloons. I feel like they're such a waste as they're only used for one evening then trashed.

I’ve done for NYE and was very happy with the result. Maybe I was lucky with my batch

A stately home near us has events but won’t allow balloons as it has very high ceilings where helium balloons are ‘lost’ and a pain to retrieve. Could this be the reason? Also balloons are bad for the environment.

Imisscoffee2021 · 16/05/2025 14:56

Depends how old and how protected the building is. I got married in a 500 year old Palace as I worked there, and would have had to have a curator present just to have flowers in the ceremony area as decor. Balloons were a huge nono as anything touching the ceilings was a problem as chemicals and things can effect murals and paintwork etc.

If you're building is a protected one then it may he the case. It may also be a fire hazard if any if the tiny battery packs in those lights was to have an issue.

Once the celebs stop flying on private planes every 5 mins I will consider not using balloons as a one off for my wedding day
