To think that everyone wees before bed?

It's one of 'those' threads I'm afraid. We got to a campsite a couple of days ago, left the house at 5.30pm and went to bed at 10.30. DH went straight to bed, I asked if he'd peed in the hedge but he hadn't. I found out (after being married for 20+ years) that he only wees when he feels the urge to go and doesn't empty his bladder before bed/long journeys etc. I'm amazed that he doesn't, he's amazed that I do.

AIBU to think that you wee before bed?

I always have a wee before bed and I usually have a wee before I leave the house for any reason. I don't feel "right" if I don't. I'm of a certain age now that I never like to be too far from a loo! But I always wee'd before bed or long journeys even when I was young.

Those of us that go ‘just in case’ end up training our bladder to constantly need to go if it feels the slightest bit of urine.
He’s probably doing it right. But I couldn’t do that.

Lovelysummerdays · 10/05/2025 12:53

I think this possibly depends on what you drink. I drink lots of tea do will have a wee when I brush my teeth and then one right before bed. When I gave up caffiene and went on a health kick I just drank water and didn’t go nearly as often.

I suppose the question is did he wake you up going for a pee after you’d settled down?

Simonjt · 10/05/2025 13:00

I only go for a wee when I need a wee, do you force out a poo too even if you don’t need to go?

PsychoHotSauce · 10/05/2025 13:03

I always do. I get restless legs when I'm trying to sleep if I don't.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 10/05/2025 13:04

I don’t.

GroovyChick87 · 10/05/2025 13:04

I wee a few times before bed because I like a cup of tea in bed. I still usually wake up needing to go in the night but it reduces the likelihood.

VanquishGirl · 10/05/2025 13:04

I only wee when I need to wee. If I don’t need a wee before bed/long journey, I would not try to make myself have one.

Croquembouchiere · 10/05/2025 13:05

I do and so does dh, but I didn't used to tbh. I'd just sleep without worrying about needing the loo in the night, like some sort of MANIAC 😂

My 7yo doesn't always use the loo before bed and he has hardly ever needed to get up in the night to use the loo. He is clearly some sort of camel or other desert animal

BlondiePortz · 10/05/2025 13:05

I do because I am normal* but no one else in my house does
*joking

EwwSprouts · 10/05/2025 13:05

Always wee before bed and then mostly sleep straight through for 8 hours. Hate waking in the night for a wee and then struggling to get back to sleep.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/05/2025 14:06

I cannot go upstairs and pass the bathroom without having a wee.

It is conditioned, but even so... it seems utterly alien to walk past the bathroom and get in bed having not had a wee for several hours. I can do one even if I have done one ten minutes ago.

So up the stairs, wee, bed. Get up, wee, downstairs. If I were to go up for anything it would be rare I'd come back down without a wee.

These days of course I only go up to bed/back down in the morning as I can't get up/down all that easily and it knackers me, I am incredibly lucky that I can still climb my own stairs at all (couldn't do anyone elses), so this does make me much more reluctant to pass up the opportunity of a wee, but even before disability, I was self-trained to wee when the opportunity arose, before sleep, before setting off somewhere etc etc.

DP will regularly go to bed without having had a wee for hours, and will get up and putz about for ages before doing a wee in the morning too! It's unnatural I tell thee!

Stickortwigs · 10/05/2025 14:07

DH exactly the same. The thought of going to bed without a wee is mind blowing to me.

ScrambledEggs12 · 10/05/2025 14:11

I always do, so does my son. 7 year old daughter doesn't though, and we don't make her go before long journeys if she doesn't want to. We have never needed to stop for her, that's usually for me!

OneAmusedShark · 10/05/2025 14:15

I always go just before bed and have never needed to wake up in the night to wee.

DH always goes just before bed but always has to get up at least once in the night to wee (and always has).

DD always goes just before bed but isn’t dry at night yet.

I couldn’t imagine ever not going before bed. It’s as automatic as brushing teeth!

I don't think thats true - certainly not for me, I can go absolutely hours without a wee despite many cups of tea, its a particular context that triggers the 'oh, I could do a wee' thing - passing the bathroom for example.

NotMilanese · 10/05/2025 14:26

But... I always need a wee! Life is just what happens between bathroom visits! For me it's not a 'just in case' before a journey, I'm not forcing anything. Plus I often get up in the night (or waaaay earlier than I would prefer) in order to go. Who are these lucky camels who can endure long car trips without stopping?

whitewineandsun · 10/05/2025 14:30

No. I go when I need to. I remember my mother going everytime we had to leave the house. She probably go before bed, too.

I agree with this. If I do a “last minute wee” before bed (which I always used to do because I wanted to have a totally empty bladder) then I usually end up having to go in the night. If I force myself to go to sleep without doing that then I usually sleep through (after the first night). I’m sure not everyone is the same but makes a big difference for me

MrsPlantagenet · 10/05/2025 14:42

I only go when I need to. I might not go before bed, nor immediately when I get up.

topcat2014 · 10/05/2025 14:46

I am scared of "training" my bladder to be smaller and smaller, so don't constantly go before bed.

Don't need to go "in the night" but could do so around 5am

CannotWaitForSummervibes · 10/05/2025 16:10

He probably just doesn’t drink as much as you do / doesn’t drink as much caffeinated drinks as you do. I don’t think there’s anything unusual about not weeing (or always weeing) before bed. It just depends upon how full the bladder is, which depends upon how much one drinks (and caffeinated drinks slightly irritate the bladder so one sees more often)

TakeMeToTheDarkSideOfTheMoon · 10/05/2025 16:11

I always need a wee before bed lol

Lolalaboucheridesagain · 10/05/2025 16:12

I always try for a wee before a journey, or before bed (especially camping! Good grief!) But maybe men feel less need to do this because it’s so much easier for them to have a ‘wild wee’ if necessary?

amooseymoomum · 10/05/2025 16:14

I was always told to visit the loo before leaving the house and before going to bed its stuck with me. the only thing is now I often have to get up in the night anyway!
