To think that everyone wees before bed?

It's one of 'those' threads I'm afraid. We got to a campsite a couple of days ago, left the house at 5.30pm and went to bed at 10.30. DH went straight to bed, I asked if he'd peed in the hedge but he hadn't. I found out (after being married for 20+ years) that he only wees when he feels the urge to go and doesn't empty his bladder before bed/long journeys etc. I'm amazed that he doesn't, he's amazed that I do.

AIBU to think that you wee before bed?

This is super weird!
surely you wee when you need a wee?

feelingbleh · 10/05/2025 17:05

I only go when I need to but I also always need to before bed as iv likely been holding it for an hour by that point.

But... I always need a wee! Life is just what happens between bathroom visits! For me it's not a 'just in case' before a journey, I'm not forcing anything. Plus I often get up in the night (or waaaay earlier than I would prefer) in order to go. Who are these lucky camels who can endure long car trips without stopping?

How old are you? I'm 47 and use prolific amounts of oestrogen cream vaginally and now I sleep 8 hrs with not a hint of needing a wee. ☺️

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 10/05/2025 17:06

I am an urology specialist nurse and waiting until you actually have the urge to go is actually healthier for your bladder HOWEVER!!!!!! I think the exception is before bed 😂 I always wee before bed and also recommend that to reduce night time visits 😂😂

Sera1989 · 10/05/2025 17:11

I always wee before bed and before leaving the house for a journey. I drink a glass of water just before falling asleep and I sleep through the night (but pee like a racehorse in the morning). My boyfriend just pees when he needs to which means he gets up to pee most nights and thinks that's normal. Getting up to pee on any night is something I want to avoid but particularly at a camp site! Men are very strange

NPET · 10/05/2025 17:15

I think men are different (in so many ways)! Certainly boys are. What I mean is that boys don't need privacy to pee like we do. We take every chance to "go" (before a journey, before playing football, before going on a walk, etc) because from childhood we KNOW that there might not be another chance! But for boys there's always another chance - just unzip and aim (or not, usually!) wherever you are.

BlueSkyBurningBright · 10/05/2025 17:17

I hate using public toilets, including those in bars and restaurants. So I always wee before I leave the house and do my best to wait till I get home.

Nighttime, I wee before going to bed, if I read for a while, I will wee again before going to sleep. I sometimes faint if I get up in the night, so try not to.

AKAanothername · 10/05/2025 17:18

I can't sleep unless I've had a wee and cleaned my teeth before going to bed. I think it's been ingrained since childhood.

Yes I think you’re spot on.

This is definitely a male vs female thing.

I actually didn’t know why and thought that perhaps after we have kids we have weaker bladders so we go just in case there’s no toilet available and so we’ve programmed ourselves to go for a wee ‘just in case’ which includes just before bed.

I don’t know any man or any female under 20 who hasn’t had kids who does this.

Couldyounot · 10/05/2025 17:30

I am 49, and if I don't attend to this before bed, my bladder will ensure that I have to during the night 😣

SemperIdem · 10/05/2025 17:32

I do wee before bed and before leaving the house. But I also leave going for a wee, despite feeling the need to, for hours and hours during the day. Especially when I’m working.

Not really sure why I do the latter, some bizarre form of procrastination I suppose. Makes handling contact naps with my newborn easier though!

zingally · 10/05/2025 17:37

My partner thinks I'm some sort of deranged camel. I will do a "before bed wee", just because my mum insisted on it as a child and the habit stuck.
But these days, I don't always have a wee at work... so that can be almost 11 hours sometimes between wees...
The thing that my partner finds most weird is that I can have the "I need a wee" sensation, but I'm not bothered by it. It's more of a "I'll go at some point within the next 3 hours", rather than "I must go NOW!"
Right this minute, I can feel my bladder is getting full, but I probably won't bother to go until I go and have a shower later this evening.

It's only backfired on me once, when I was leaving a friends house, who lives about an hour and a half away. I sort of needed a wee, but it wasn't urgent. Then it got VERY urgent all of a sudden, and I ended up pulling into a motorway services about 30 minutes from home, and doing the wee waddle from the car to the loos!

And no, I don't get water infections. I've only had one in my entire life.

HouseofDreams · 10/05/2025 17:37

Just reading this thread is making me want to go

Manthide · 10/05/2025 17:39

I only go before bed or a long journey if I need to go. I don't 'try' and have a wee. I've always suggested to my dc that they should go to the toilet before a long journey or before bed but if they told me they were okay I'd leave it.

BunnyLake · 10/05/2025 17:40

I always go for a wee before bed and it’s the first thing I do when I get up.

Nanny0gg · 10/05/2025 17:41

I was always staggered at the number of children that hadn't been to the loo before they came to school (and then asked to go at 9.15!)

BlueEyedBogWitch · 10/05/2025 17:41

Even the thought of anyone not having a pre-bed wee is giving me anxiety.

Manthide · 10/05/2025 17:42

@zingally I'm like that at work. I've been there for almost 4 years and I can count on one hand how many times I've used the bathroom! I work a normal 8 hour shift and even when I get home I don't normally go for another couple of hours. I have never had a uti or any other issues. Some people at work seem to go every hour.

katepilar · 10/05/2025 17:46

Its bad for your bladder to wee when you dont feel the need.
I usually do go before bed but because I need to.

Overthemoun · 10/05/2025 17:53

Even Bluey calls it a tactical wee! I can’t fall asleep without one.

footpath · 10/05/2025 18:05

I always need a wee before bed but I never get up during the night to wee so it works for me.

Auburngal · 10/05/2025 18:07

I do pee before bed as it’s a habit. Plus before long journeys or situations where stress makes you wee more

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/05/2025 18:09

I do but I might not if our bathroom wasn't downstairs. Then again, I wake most mornings at about 5am for a wee anyway 🙄

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/05/2025 18:09

I can go for a long time without a wee. I almost always go for one when I'm in the bathroom brushing my teeth etc before bed, but sometimes I don't need to.

Valkyrie3 · 10/05/2025 20:03

But surely all parents train their kids to do a wee before bed when they are newly potty trained? Presumably the habit stems from then and we all (well, most of us) carry on doing that. Do a wee and clean your teeth 🤷🏻‍♀️
