To think that everyone wees before bed?

It's one of 'those' threads I'm afraid. We got to a campsite a couple of days ago, left the house at 5.30pm and went to bed at 10.30. DH went straight to bed, I asked if he'd peed in the hedge but he hadn't. I found out (after being married for 20+ years) that he only wees when he feels the urge to go and doesn't empty his bladder before bed/long journeys etc. I'm amazed that he doesn't, he's amazed that I do.

AIBU to think that you wee before bed?

Before bed, yes. Only so I don’t have to get up during the night cos that’s annoying. I only really need to get up in the night to pee if I’ve been drinking lots especially alcohol.
Before long journeys, only if I need it really. I’ve never really been someone who needs a wee urgently and can hold it for a surprisingly long time. I thinks it’s a throwback to high school when the toilets were so disgusting I went I went for actual years never peeing in them. I mean never. Until I got to sixth year and we had our own toilets.

I only go for a wee when I need a wee, do you force out a poo too even if you don’t need to go?

That’s completely different; you only poo once or twice a day, whereas there’s always a bit of just in case wee to do! Always before bed and before a journey. Also, I work in a school so I have to wee on their schedule at break and lunch!

Octavia64 · 10/05/2025 16:17

No I don’t

ChompandaGrazia · 10/05/2025 16:19

I wonder if it is a male vs female thing. If a man is caught short he can go behind a bush or in a corner, not so east for a woman. Therefore most of us women have learned to go before we need to just as a precaution.
Anyway, I’d go to the bathroom to brush my teeth so it makes sense to wee in there at the same time.

ItGhoul · 10/05/2025 16:19

I just go when I need to. I don’t wee before bed if I don’t need one. It seems to be fine!

HornyHornersPinger · 10/05/2025 16:22

Yes it's a tactical wee.

Twinklysparkles · 10/05/2025 16:23

I feel like this is more of a woman thing, even before DS I had to, although I do always get DS (12) to go before bed. I just know if I lie down to sleep without going my brain will stop me from sleeping until I try wether I need it or not. Absolutely wild that it took 20+ years to notice though 🤣

I wee a few times before bed because I like a cup of tea in bed. I still usually wake up needing to go in the night but it reduces the likelihood.

A cup of tea in bed? Don't you brush your teeth before you go bed?

Decapitatedsausage · 10/05/2025 16:28

I always have a wee before bed, and then an extra “nervous wee” as my husband calls it, because I worry I will wake in the night if I don’t try and squeeze out another wee just before I goto sleep. My husband only goes if he needs it, but that annoys me as it is often at 5am and he could have avoided that if he’d went before sleep!

Houseofpainjumparound · 10/05/2025 16:28

I always need to wee before bed anyway and if i wake around midnight sometimss i can ignore it but when camping for some unknown reason I seem to wake up several times and absolutely desperate that I can't sleep through it... seriously contemplating Tennant lady pants this year

Sherararara · 10/05/2025 16:29

It’s a woman thing. Smaller bladders, effects of having kids and all that. I wee every 5 mins (it seems), DH must less and no not always before bed. If he needs to he does. If he doesn’t he doesn’t.

Whitecleanoverneat · 10/05/2025 16:33

No. I drink absolutely loads and just go when I need to. I actually like feeling, oh I don't feel like I need to go before bed!

I seem to have a much larger bladder than my husband who has always needed to go every 10 mins it feels like!!

Motherknowsrest · 10/05/2025 16:34

I've always wee'd before bed (I'm 50). I'm quite a hydrated person though.
Can run and jump and jump and my bladder is still watertight despite often having a "just in case" wee.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 10/05/2025 16:34

I always go before bed or a journey. But it's not just habit. If I didn't go I'd be up a number of times at night and stopping constantly on the journey. If anything the 'just in case' wee is what gets me a full hour or even 2 into the journey. I constantly go, its annoying and causes so much stress especially around big events and concerts, it puts me off going.

Bonbon249 · 10/05/2025 16:35

Trained into me from an early age - wee before bed, wee before travelling and once you arrive at the destination! I also have a built in radar for loos in bars and restaurants!

Grammarnut · 10/05/2025 16:35

InternetRandoms · 10/05/2025 12:52

Those of us that go ‘just in case’ end up training our bladder to constantly need to go if it feels the slightest bit of urine.
He’s probably doing it right. But I couldn’t do that.

Once you have had a couple of children your bladder is trained to want to wee often and the perineum becomes less capable of holding wee in. Men have a longer urethra and can go for longer without a wee. (Btw my DM used to speak of 'wee and bigs' in relation to bodily functions when I was a child - I only recently realised 'wee' was not a universal for urinating but meant 'the little thing' - one result of my DM's euphemisms is that I always find the surname Biggs incredibly funny, though).

MyDeftDuck · 10/05/2025 16:40

I’m afraid I have to go ‘just in case’. Being disabled, it is a worry that I might not find a suitable lo when I’m out and about. And I always go before bed as well as at least once in the night.

mynameiscalypso · 10/05/2025 16:44

I always go before bed and before going out. It means that, unlike my DH, I’m not immediately looking for a toilet as soon as we get anywhere.

LoveFridaynight · 10/05/2025 16:48

I always go before bed or a long journey. So does DH and DD1. DD2 doesn't and she's the only one who never needs a wee in the night. I can't relax properly if I haven't had a wee at night.

lifeonmars100 · 10/05/2025 16:48

I now need to wee after reading this thread!

Umidontknow · 10/05/2025 16:50

I wee before bed and long journeys but mainly because I have endometriosis on my bladder so it gets very painful if I don't but I really don't think it's weird to only go when you need too. I know I just need to go a lot 😆

I think going before bed or a long journey isn’t the sort of ‘just in case’ that causes issues. Seems sensible and normal to me. I read somewhere you shouldn’t go ‘just in case’ if the next loo was less than 2 hours away. Night and king journeys both qualify.

DelCalMun · 10/05/2025 17:02

Does he drink enough water? If he doesn't wee before bed, does he have to go in the night? Is he that annoying person that wants a wee one hour into a long car journey? My kids surprise me when they get up in the morning and don't wee first thing. Hey ho I guess everyone's different.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 10/05/2025 17:03

I always have a safety wee before bed and long journeys. I've never once had to get out of bed to wee, and it's never me having to stop the car at services. I haven't trained my bladder to do anything, I go a regular number of times a day, probably 4 or 5 times (including safety wees).
