To think that everyone wees before bed?

It's one of 'those' threads I'm afraid. We got to a campsite a couple of days ago, left the house at 5.30pm and went to bed at 10.30. DH went straight to bed, I asked if he'd peed in the hedge but he hadn't. I found out (after being married for 20+ years) that he only wees when he feels the urge to go and doesn't empty his bladder before bed/long journeys etc. I'm amazed that he doesn't, he's amazed that I do.

AIBU to think that you wee before bed?

Tactical Wees are definitely a thing in our house. Always wee before bed, and as soon as I wake up.

The exception is when we're camping, I seem to up and down all bloody night but at home, I rarely get up for a mid night wee. Thus, I have told DH that my tent days are numbered and I want a caravan.

Wthfckit · 10/05/2025 20:40

Go when need to. You can't pre-empt a wee/poo if you don't need one at the time. I do remind kids (and me) to go if they need to before going out, but again, if you don't need it you don't need it.

OneAmusedShark · 10/05/2025 20:45

I must confess, when I first read the thread title I thought it was “To think that everyone wees the bed?” !

AlteredStater · 10/05/2025 20:59

I do go before bed because I need to. Probably due to having tea in the evening! I also have to get up in the night to go (all my life, so not tea-related!). DP also goes before bed, but again he'll have been consuming some sort of liquid so does need to go!

Purpleturtle43 · 10/05/2025 21:06

This is very interesting. I always pee before bed and then also usually during the night.

I am a teacher and have to pee on command at certain times throughout the day, maybe I am just used to that now after 20 years.

2 of my 3 children are like camels and will literally pee once in the morning and one at night, I just don't think that seems right. My daughter cannot make herself go or even squeeze out a wee bit if she doesn't need which I have always thought was strange but maybe I'm wrong getting her to try. She used to have frequent urine infections so have to tell her to try every morning before school.

LittleGreenDragons · 10/05/2025 21:07

Always go before bed or long journeys. Since having a prolapse caused by gym equipment (who knew that could happen!) I can barely manage two hours without a wee, and some mornings my bladder hurts so much I can barely breathe when I stand up to get off the bed but it's not any more full than usual. No idea why but I'm sick of it 😕

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/05/2025 21:08

I have a wee when I get into bed and one just before I go to sleep

WildflowerConstellations · 10/05/2025 21:10

NotMilanese · 10/05/2025 14:26

But... I always need a wee! Life is just what happens between bathroom visits! For me it's not a 'just in case' before a journey, I'm not forcing anything. Plus I often get up in the night (or waaaay earlier than I would prefer) in order to go. Who are these lucky camels who can endure long car trips without stopping?

I was thinking this. I always go before bed and before going out but I always actually need to! Not always a lot, but at least somewhat.

Bigfatsunandclouds · 10/05/2025 21:12

I just go for a wee when I need one.

soupyspoon · 10/05/2025 21:15

InternetRandoms · 10/05/2025 12:52

Those of us that go ‘just in case’ end up training our bladder to constantly need to go if it feels the slightest bit of urine.
He’s probably doing it right. But I couldn’t do that.

This isnt true. I have always used the toilet just in case and when available. I didnt suffer then with a pressing need to wee when I do actually need to wee

Now, with fibrpids pressing on my bladder and menopause, I have times when theres no need at all and bam, the next second I am literally wetting myself.

DinoLil · 10/05/2025 21:37

I'm of the 'have you had a wee, have you got a clean hanky and 5p for the phone' brigade before I do anything! That includes going to bed.

I don't need the 5p now btw. Oh, and I have a loo roll by the bed, not a hanky. (For nose blowing and lippy blotting FYI!)

But yes! Definitely a wee before bed and before going out. My bathroom is a loooooooong way from my bedroom including a steep flight of stairs, so, at 53, I'm not risking breaking my neck at 2am or getting a gazunder!

blubbyblub · 10/05/2025 21:47

Simonjt · 10/05/2025 13:00

I only go for a wee when I need a wee, do you force out a poo too even if you don’t need to go?

You don’t wee before bed? Dint you have to get up in the night then?

NPET · 11/05/2025 00:36

Cucy · 10/05/2025 17:27

Yes I think you’re spot on.

This is definitely a male vs female thing.

I actually didn’t know why and thought that perhaps after we have kids we have weaker bladders so we go just in case there’s no toilet available and so we’ve programmed ourselves to go for a wee ‘just in case’ which includes just before bed.

I don’t know any man or any female under 20 who hasn’t had kids who does this.

True but I would just question your last point. I'm 21 and I've always peed when I've had the chance, especially at school and especially for sports events. I remember going on cross country runs and being pleased I'd "gone" before starting. While boys would just nip behind trees or bushes and almost dare us to watch!

Welshmonster · 11/05/2025 00:58

By constantly emptying our bladders theme weaken the muscles so they can’t hold as much.

I’m currently bladder training at home so waiting until I’m really desperate to go.

we’ve become a nation of just in case toilet users. They wouldn’t have done this years ago because there weren’t public toilets and outside loos were cold and dark.

if he’s happy then leave him be.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 11/05/2025 01:01

Thinking about. I only go when I feel I need to. Despite drinking loads of coffee through the day, isn’t that often
i’m never woken by a need to go, but as an insomniac i will often go for something to do!
Im 60 and haven’t noticed any change in habit as I’ve got older despite 3 children

Imonlyhappywhenitrains · 11/05/2025 01:11

Yes, and before I leave the house.
I couldn't sleep for worrying about it if I didn't try - even if I didn't especially feel the need to.
I have sometimes gone in the cloakroom before going to bed, and by the time I get upstairs if more than 5-10 minutes later I might go again in the bathroom. 😂

StarTwirl · 11/05/2025 02:02

I wee when I need to.
I’ve never tried to wee before going out or to bed if I didn’t feel I needed to.
I had no idea that was a thing
I wee a lot anyway so I pretty much always wee before bed or leaving the house anyway

SapporoBaby · 11/05/2025 02:04

My husband and I both do. We also both wake at 4am to go. It annoys us both but tbf we drink too much water.

DaisyChain505 · 11/05/2025 02:07

No I don’t try “just incase” and sometimes even if I’m lying in bed and know I need to wee and I’m too tired and too lazy I’ll just think to myself that I’ll just hold it until morning and then go to sleep!

SapporoBaby · 11/05/2025 02:07

That’s because men can pee in public/ down an alley/ in a hedge. Women are judged far more harshly for squatting so we teach female children to use the toilet as they will not be able to nip to pee like boys or men.

Also I have no children and I pee before going somewhere or to bed and have since childhood.

StarTwirl · 11/05/2025 02:22

How is everyone making themselves pee Confused

is this some kind of generational thing.

Tbf I always asked my DC if they needed a wee before we went out. I suppose I should have actually made them try. I didn’t really think to because it’s never been a thing in my family.

if I need to pee when I’m out I just find somewhere to pee or hold it in and I don’t really drink when I’m out unnecessarily unless I’m somewhere I’ve just bought a drink. Or I’ve been walking ages so have some water I’ll have been carrying around for hours and only really need 5 minutes from home.

Fruitbat99 · 11/05/2025 02:24

EwwSprouts · 10/05/2025 13:05

Always wee before bed and then mostly sleep straight through for 8 hours. Hate waking in the night for a wee and then struggling to get back to sleep.

Wtf? Some people sleep all the way through without needing a wee????

StarTwirl · 11/05/2025 02:29

I actually think my brain suddenly tells my bladder it’s full before I go out bevause just as I get to the door or go to put my shoes on to leave I suddenly need to pee most of the time.

like I’ve been conditioned like Pavlovs dogs

so I never think ‘I’ll try to pee’ before I leave the house but my brain tells me I have the urge to pee before I leave the house even if I’ve just had a wee 5 minutes before

StarTwirl · 11/05/2025 02:30

I’m going to start making myself wee before bed as an experiment to see if anything comes out even if I don’t have the urge to

nameobsessed · 11/05/2025 02:36

TicklishMintDuck · 10/05/2025 16:17

That’s completely different; you only poo once or twice a day, whereas there’s always a bit of just in case wee to do! Always before bed and before a journey. Also, I work in a school so I have to wee on their schedule at break and lunch!

I can easily go from 8:30-3:30 without needing to wee at all! Also if I sat on the toilet right now, nothing would happen, I can’t force it unless there’s a need to go. I don’t know how everyone else’s bladder is working but mine clearly didn’t get the memo.
