To think that everyone wees before bed?

It's one of 'those' threads I'm afraid. We got to a campsite a couple of days ago, left the house at 5.30pm and went to bed at 10.30. DH went straight to bed, I asked if he'd peed in the hedge but he hadn't. I found out (after being married for 20+ years) that he only wees when he feels the urge to go and doesn't empty his bladder before bed/long journeys etc. I'm amazed that he doesn't, he's amazed that I do.

AIBU to think that you wee before bed?

Wtf? Some people sleep all the way through without needing a wee????

When I was a teenager (depressed) I could sleep for 13/14 hours without getting up at all. Maybe that trained my bladder to be extra camel like because I can’t remember a time I’ve woken up prematurely to use the toilet.

NattyTurtle59 · 11/05/2025 02:47

I don't always, it depends how long before bed I have something to drink.

Thats like my daughter. And whe. She gets up, she still doesn't go to the toilet straight away.

Yeah, I take my dogs out for a wee, feed them and get a drink before going to the toilet usually. DH is the same.

Do you rush straight in before doing anything else?

RoveSt · 11/05/2025 03:02

Surely it depends on how much you’ve had to drink?

I can always wee because I drink a lot of water daily but equally I can hold a decent amount in need.

RawBloomers · 11/05/2025 05:06

I didn't when I was younger but started when I was pregnant when I felt an urgent need to go even when I'd just emptied my bladder. Once I gave birth my sleep was so bad I just didn't want anything to wake me up that I could avoid so... Now, as a previous poster said, I've trained myself to "need" to go. Keep half heartedly trying to train myself out of it but hasn't worked so far!

Mothership4two · 11/05/2025 12:14

No I go when I want to go. Someone told me, when I was young, not to 'force' yourself to wee as it wasn't healthy - not use why now and may be old wive's tale

I wee a few times before bed because I like a cup of tea in bed. I still usually wake up needing to go in the night but it reduces the likelihood.

Do you go to sleep having drunk tea but not brushing your teeth after the tea?

LimeQuoter · 11/05/2025 12:45

I do

Communitywebbing · 11/05/2025 12:47

I suspect that anyone who wees for the last time hours before bed and sleep s until morning isn’t drinking enough water and is quite dehydrated.

FinallyHere · 11/05/2025 12:53

How can you ‘wed’ when you don’t need two. Either I need to … or I don’t.

Probably. But I don't usually wee hours before bed and, if I need to go during the night, I get up and go.

Tessiebear2023 · 11/05/2025 13:03

I always wee before bed. I have a glass of milk about half an hour before bed, so it makes sense to have a wee. After turning 45 I noticed that I'd wake up needing a wee at about 5:30 every morning, I didn't want to stop drinking milk, so I decided to try kedgels instead. After 6 months of training my pelvic floor muscles I noticed a massive difference and I can lie in until 8 on the weekend before I need to get up to wee. Very handy when camping!

nutbrownhare15 · 11/05/2025 13:07

Always. I'm often woken in the night or early morning by needing to go so always go to reduce that.

WrylyAmused · 11/05/2025 13:14

I think we can end up with some low grade not-so-helpful-to-us behaviours when we do things "just because" rather than because of a genuine need.

So no. I eat when I'm hungry, and don't when I'm not, regardless of it being "the right time" for a meal.
And try to stop when I'm full, even if it's tasty, though I'm not as good at that!

I pee when I need to, not "just in case" or because it's a set time. Although I also drink a lot of tea and water, so that's quite a lot.

I decided a long time ago to train myself to listen more to my body's signals and take action based on those rather than a general idea of "good" that might not suit.

Only time I agree with OP's approach is for someone who has medical needs or for small children who haven't yet learnt the signals for being hungry/tired/thirsty/needing to wee etc, so we remind them. But surely that's done with the aim of getting them to recognise the physical signals & make those decisions for themselves?

JarvisIsland · 11/05/2025 13:28

I go for a wee before bed, because I really cba to have to get up in the night at any point, but could do 11pm - 8am no issues, though also if I’ve drunk quite a lot of water during the evening then it makes sense anyway that there would be a feeling of ‘I could go for a wee’ . I don’t sit there for ages to squeeze out a miserly drop!

Other than that I go when I need to go, so not just because we are about to go out or whatever. I can do quite a long journey without having to stop for a wee so I think going before bed hasn’t caused any lasting continence/urgency based issues.

TicklishMintDuck · 11/05/2025 13:33

nameobsessed · 11/05/2025 02:36

I can easily go from 8:30-3:30 without needing to wee at all! Also if I sat on the toilet right now, nothing would happen, I can’t force it unless there’s a need to go. I don’t know how everyone else’s bladder is working but mine clearly didn’t get the memo.

That’s quite worrying - are you drinking enough?! I need loads of wees!

soupyspoon · 11/05/2025 13:41

Early in peri menopause I was getting up around 3 or 4 times in the night but thankfully I havent had that for a couple of years now, still in peri, this must be around 6 or 7 years now.

But do have terrible urgency all of a sudden, to the degree of pain, quite often. Worse if Im drinking the right amount of liquid and I suspect I dont drink enough because Im trying to avoid that.

On holiday, I go to use the loo regardless on how desperate I am when leaving hotel. cafe/restaurant, places such tourist attractions and airport. As 1. Have no idea when will be the next opportunity to go and 2. To reduce the use of some disgusting places which I have encountered on previous holidays. Plus some I had to pay a Euro for these awful places..

Totally this, when abroad in particular, Spain and Italy, not even sure they've heard of the concept of 'public toilets'. Even the ones (and its always a singular one) in cafes and restaurants are dire and filthy

In this country I have a toilet app, but even then you cannot rely on it. I remember an hours walk once, in the rain, desparate for the look, no suitable buishes or anything, its worse for me in the cold. Toilet in a car park at the end of the walk, great.

Not great. Shut, closed down. Locked up.

Had to then go into a pub, buy something, so that made me need the loo then on the way back.

notatinydancer · 11/05/2025 16:31

Only if I need to go. I couldn’t make myself go.
Sometimes get up in the night, sometimes I don’t.

Rome. I was with two couples that were on the same tour holiday as me. We went to a cafe about 350m from Trevi Fountain. The toilet was down a spiral staircase with wobbly handrails. Then walked through two very large rooms/spaces with only a couple of low wattage bulbs. Toilet was up a few steps and half the base was hanging off the platform. I am sure used the water from the fountain above is used to flush the toilet! Someone on TripAdvisor took a photo of this toilet. Couldn’t remember the name of cafe.

Then in Grenada, Spain, visited the loo in a cafe. Opened the door to the cubicle and there was a large hole covering about half of floor space. As the door to the toilet area was lockable, I did lock that door. No idea how I got on and off loo!

Another cafe, can’t remember where. Diners had to walk through the kitchen to use the loos.

Absolutely

I could have written a book about Romes 'toilets'.

OhYeahOhYeah · 11/05/2025 18:31

Always ALWAYS have a ‘final wee’ before bed, and always have a pee when I wake up in the morning. My mum drilled this into us as kids so we didn’t get a bladder infection lol

My youngest daughter is a like a camel and sometimes doesn’t pee until about 3 in the afternoon! I get cross about that as worry she will upset her bladder/kidneys! 😂😂

FinallyHere · 11/05/2025 18:35

I wonder how much of the ‘strategic wees’ are about suggestion. At work, I might notice that I need to but if the phone rings or a meeting starts, I’ll forget all about the need to go until my concentration breaks.

my morher had a very troublesome relationship with her bladder. We always need to know whether the nearest loo is and be ready at any moment for the dash there. Mother would also limit fluids when out and about to avoid the need.

I am still convinced that limiting fluids make the urge to per consume more often as the urine will be more concentrated. I make it my business to drink 2.5L min each day, and only need to visit the loo three times. On waking, after lunch and after dinner. All good.

full disclosure I am a woman who has not given birth ever.
