Demonic Possession

Do you believe?

I've been watching a lot of podcasts on YouTube lately with exorcist from the church.

I'm torn. Do you believe?

Yes my pre teen is possibly possessed 😆 it definitely feels like it anyway

JustBiscoff · 01/05/2025 16:25

Yes, as a practising Catholic.

I believe narcissists are possessed, or that they have a different spirit to us. They steal, kill, lie and destroy. They all play by the same rule book so they're predictable. It's odd they they all act the same one way or another so I think it has a spiritual element. Master actors.

This is kind of my thinking. People who do evil things, where does that evil come from? What makes them do these things as opposed to someone who is 'good'?

"Evil" isn't a malign external influence. People are just complex.

Flip it round. What makes people do good things? You don't need to find a supernatural reason for that. Good is the default to you Why does the opposite require Evil, or Demons, or whatever?

I don't understand how people would differentiate between mental illness and a demonic possession. Is it really obvious like in the Exorcist with projectile vomiting and spinning heads?

The one priest I was listening to said there are a few ways. Off the top of my head one is knowing things they couldn't possibly know. And another was an adverse effect to anything that has been blessed (unbeknownst to them).

My (sadly now late) stepdaughter was plagued all her life by serious mental illness. When she was in her twenties, some well-meaning idiot of a minister suggested possession and took her to a 'deliverance' service. Anyone with half a braincell about mental illness can probably predict what happened next.

From then on, she was plagued with the idea that she was demonically possessed. In her better moments, she knew this wasn't the case, but even then, she was frightened it might be true. When she was ill, the devil became a massive feature. Her dog was looking at her with devil's eyes. She turned family photos to the wall because the devil was watching her through the eyes.

I don't think the brainless moron who did that to her made her illness worse in one sense. She would have been ill anyway, but it gave a terrifying twist to her illness, and it gave her a reason to resist treatment. (The pills won't work. It's the devil).

To answer the OP's question. No, I don't believe in it. It's a nonsense that has been used to abuse and torture children and adults. To this lay minister, I would say, 'Stop it. Now. You are doing more harm that you know.'

This is very sad to read. Very sorry for your loss x

This is all absolute nonsense. Inanimate objects have no spiritual powers, "blessed" or not.

People also definitley put curses and black magic on people.

One of my cousins (we dont speak anymore because she got so dark and nasty) was reallt into black witchcraft. She was in a local witches group. She told me that they put dark spells on people that they didnt like

I'm not saying it does, but it 'could' be. I do think that we haven't even scratch the surface and there is so much we just don't understand.

Those spells have no effect at all. Witchcraft and curses are not real things, and have no power.

I have to say i disagree.

I think witchcraft can summon negative energies and negative powers. When my couisn joined wicca she became extremely dark and negative. I feel she was influenced by dark energies.

There are negative energies and entities around us and we have to protect ourselves. I try to visualise myself surrounded by a white protective bubble.

Just because we don't know everything doesn't mean we know nothing. In the hundreds of years of trying to explain the world through science, or by religion or the supernatural, the needle is always moved by science. Always. Supernatural explanations have always been replaced by scientific ones. But nobody has ever been able to show that something that used to be explained by science, but turn out, it's actually witchcraft.

You can visualise all you like, it's all still nonsense.

Exactly, the supernatural has never been proven. The universe behaves according to a complex set of rules we don't always understand, but there's nothing spiritual behind them.

I also think that when people self abuse and get themselves into a low vibration, they attract negative entities.

I used to date this man. When he wasnt drinking he was fine.

He became an alcoholic. After he drank a lot, he became scary and he
really would look possessed. He was scary. I broke up with him.

I read this in spiritual books too. The book said that when humans get into low vibrational states from things as drug or alcohol abuse, its easier for negative entities to attach to them.

Octavia64 · 01/05/2025 16:50

This was a big thing in Victorian times.

people got very worried about how to tell the difference between mental illness and demonic possession.

it’s one of the things that led to scientific research into this to try to work out what was what.

the vast majority of cases turned out to be mental illness in the sense that doctors could trigger the “demonic possession” be exposing the person to either the thing they were scared of (spiders, snakes etc) or it was triggered by a physical cause (eg a lot of women who were thought to be “demonically possessed” would become so when touched by a man - no prizes for guessing their trauma!)

people decided that if “demonic possession” was scientifically understood then it probably wasn’t demonic possession “just” fear and mental illness.

you can’t really imagine a demon which possesses you every time you see a spider. It doesn’t fit the narrative of why would a demon want to do that? What’s the point?

and then it turned out that a lot of these people could be “cured” of the “demonic possession” using therapy and drugs at which point it kind of died assn explanation.

if drugs stop demonic possession it’s probably not demonic possession, it’s probably your body.

Err...no.

Alcohol makes people aggressive. There's no spirits or energies involved there.

I spent 25 years desperately trying to be a good Christian, and I saw NOTHING that proved the existence of any kind of spiritual realm at all.

I enjoy listening to the exorcist who taught my priest in seminary. His theology is 👌 and it transformed my life. Mental illness or demonic affliction (several levels possible) are different things but one can lead to another. He taught me that practising virtue; living an ordered life and having an ordered mind keep both away and result in a very happy life.

A lot of spiritual books say it.

That if humans weaken their vibrational state through drugs and alcohol, negaitve energies find it easier to attach to them.

We pick other peoples energy up everywhere we go, aswell.

I cleanse my energy every day now. Especially after ive been in a large group setting, like on a bus.

You should probably put down the spiritual books.
