Is a size 14 big?

fattytoadboy · 30/04/2025 22:58

Just that really. Been somewhere between a size 12-14 for the past 20 years. Even when I lost two stone I still fit into my size 12 clothes. Now I’m about 12 stone at 5,7 and a solid 14.

I definitely feel better around the 10.5 stone mark. I’m really struggling to lose weight. Sometimes I look at myself and can see a roll around my belly or feel like my face looks bloated and neither of these things make me happy or confident.

Equally when I’m dressed well I think I look ok. I know it’s totally subjective but in your opinion is a size 14 what you’d consider large? I don’t think I look obscenely overweight but I definitely would look and feel better with a few stone off.

I'm 5'7" too. Was always a 12-14 for years. I'm now a size 20 and feel fucking awful but struggling with all sorts of factors to get a grip on it. I often felt a little overweight at a size 14 but looking back I looked absolutely fine, I was very fit and toned. It's all relative. I'd swap with you in a second if that helps!

It would be unusual to be a U.K. size 14 and have a BMI within the healthy range.

OP, how do you feel? If you feel physically well and are happy with how you look and feel confident, that’s all that matters. Don’t worry about people’s perceptions.

Not really, I wore size 14 when I weighed 10 stone with BMI 24. I have big hips. Lots of women are the same!

SaladSandwichesForTea · 01/05/2025 09:46

I think it depends where you carry it.

I'm also 5'7.
Size 8 at 8.5 stone.
Size 10 at 8st 10.
Size 12 at 9.3-11 stone.
Size 14 at 11 stone.
Size 16-18 at 13.5 stone.

I look big at 14 because I carry all my weight on my belly. At size 8 I look ill. And the difference between size 8 and size 10 for me is a just a few lbs so it is a fine line to look healthy.

My friend is a 14 and she is all boobs and hips and looks fantastic, I would love her figure.

So IMO it depends more on where you carry it and the rest of your body.

thesugarbumfairy · 01/05/2025 09:55

I dont think its big. but its certainly not small.
For context I've spent the last 15 years as an 18-20. I'm now a 14 at 11st9. Technically still obese at 5ft4 (mixed race so BMI bands are lower) I'm clearly not obese, or even fat in my opinion, but I'm still chubby.
I guess a lot depends on how your weight is distributed. I inherited a boxy short torso and big thighs. My arms are disproportionately big now (loose skin) I have a mum tum which I didn't have the last time I was this weight.
I thought I'd feel thin when I got to this but I don't. But I dont feel 'big' I certainly feel better - and I look better. I think I've settled here for a bit, but I intend to lose about a stone and a half more.

starrynight009 · 01/05/2025 09:56

Like everyone is saying, it think it depends on your body size and shape. I've put on 2 stone in the last few years and I'm now 14 stone. Although I swear my 34/H breasts are stone each 😂I wear size 12-14 (more 14 these days). As I am the heaviest I've ever been and overweight according to my BMI, yes I feel a little large. However, I'm also 5'10 tall so I wouldn't necessarily say I look as large as I feel.

I go by how I feel. I know when I'm keeping fit and eating well I feel much better compared to when I'm not. I care about that more than my dress size.

Stressfordays · 01/05/2025 09:56

It's completely different for everyone. Depends on height, build, where you carry weight. Although a size 14 on me (5'8, pear shaped) doesn't look bad, I still feel fat at that. I've dropped to a size 8 and it feels too slim so there are different ends of the scale. If you don't feel good at the size you are, do something to change it. If you don't like how you look in photos at that size, do something to change it. It's about how you feel, no one else.

Figgygal · 01/05/2025 10:01

What age are you op?
I'm 44 and see a massive change in my body shape. Have always been a size 12-14 but put on half a stone and definitely heading to 16 territory.

Purpleisnotmycolour · 01/05/2025 10:04

It's obese at 5'4" so I consider it big. It's also really an 18 in old money. Clothes sizes have gone up massively.

Mounjaroversary · 01/05/2025 10:05

I am 5ft 10, sitting at just over 11st and size 10-14, just depending on the shop!!

What is your BMI telling you. Although not accurate to be honest but remember bone structure etc can play a really big part in clothes sizes. Even if I got below a healthy BMI I will never be a size 8 for example, as I have wide frames, broad shoulders, wide hips, long arms and legs and I have quite a large prominent rib cage.

MattCauthon · 01/05/2025 10:14

Yes, I think that would be definitely be considered a bit overweight. I'm a 16 and way 13stone so no judgement here. I don't think it's epically bad but I think it's understandable you might want to lose a bit of weight and be closer to a 12 but I also don't think you should be feeling you're the size of a house or anything.

recipientofraspberries · 01/05/2025 10:14

I'm 5'5 and between a size 14 and 16 - for me, that's overweight. Trying to lose weight at the moment. It will vary for everyone based on height and also lifestyle/fitness - some people are physically bigger because they're muscular from certain exercise etc.

Amiwrongamiright · 01/05/2025 10:17

It’s almost like a how big is a piece of string question.

14 can look big on some people, just right on others and small on a few.

It really depends on height and build.

So I’m a 14-16 and would say I’m bigger than I should be, I need to lose about a stone and I’m 5ft 3 and carry weight around my belly.

You sound a similar size to me, I hated my large rib cage when I was younger and couldn't wear skinny jumpers without it looking like I had an extra set of boobs

Gemstonebeach · 01/05/2025 10:20

Yes. I am a size 14 at the moment and feel very large. However I put all my weight on my belly and breasts so look much larger then people who put weight on in proportion across their body. I have a friend who is 20kgs heavier then me but looks much better then me because her fat is spread across her body better.

policeandthebeef · 01/05/2025 10:23

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 30/04/2025 23:08

I mean, you're going to have all the teeny tiny competitive undereating MN waifs saying "goodness gracious! I can't imagine ever being that size, I'd feel like an elephant, a blue whale, even bigger! I'm sure I'd break my dainty little bed and I don't think I could reach that size even if I gorged/scoffed/(insert MN favourite verb here) 24/7!"

But ignore them. If you're comfortable with it, it's fine. If you aren't, you can try to change your size or try to change your relationship with your size. The opinions of random MN users on your size is irrelevant (and likely to be unhealthy and unrealistic)

That's really fucking horrible.

and reeks of jealousy.

no I couldn't imagine being a size 14, which is overweight. What's the issue with that?

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 01/05/2025 10:29

I'm 50, perimenopausal, 5ft 10.5" (was measured yesterday during NHS healthy nation thing) and 12 stone, making my BMI (if it matters) around 24. Waist is 31". I carry my weight on my lower half, I'm a size 14, (sometimes a 12 in some stores). I'm strong, healthy, fit, workout daily, lift weights, walk a lot. On me, 14 isn't big.

That's bollocks, I wear size 14 at times and I'm in a very healthy BMI range

Yes!!!! And when I do carry some fat it goes straight there, prob my body trying to protect my massive ribs 🤣 I def have that 4 boobs look

Nottsandcrosses · 01/05/2025 10:45

Im 5ft 9 and currently 11.7 stone and look slim, i want to lose at least another stone, Im a size 10 generally.

At my heaviest i was a size 14 and although i carried it well i was infact overweight.

So yes i consider it large.

Floofle · 01/05/2025 10:47

I'm a similar height to you (5 7.5) and 12 stone 12, and a size 14 too.
I am a bit (but not very) overweight to be honest, and feel a bit chubby.
My ideal weight would be around 11 stone! Which would probably be between sizes 12-14.

MamaLenny · 01/05/2025 10:55

I'm similar to you op, I go between a 12-14 and I'm happy being able to zip up size 12 jeans comfortably, feel annoyed with myself when bigger.

I have big breasts though and even when I've lost a lot of weight in the past (due to stress/grief) I've still needed to buy bigger tops. So I think sometimes it also depends on body shape for people rather than weight.

GustyBaloo · 01/05/2025 11:07

XenoBitch · 30/04/2025 23:12

I was 5ft8, my bottom was 14, and top was 12. Was in the healthy BMI range.

Same here.

Same height, and I have large hips - bone wise not fat wise.
At my skinniest when I was 19, I was 12 bottom (sometimes 10) and 8/10 top.

It's not all about sizing. It's about finding what fits your body shape.

DisenchantedDewberry · 01/05/2025 11:08

I'm 5'6 and same as you between a 12-14, I'm about 11.4 stone. Last year I weighed 13stone, size 16-18 and went through a lot of stress and grief and was very unwell and I went down to 10.2. I felt better in my clothes and general fitness levels were better, not being out of breath from a walk etc able to do more however this was not sustainable (I was so unwell I wasn't eating very often etc). Now that I'm back to normal meals and lacking exercise again it's just hopped back on and I again feel rubbish 😅
I don't feel that a 14 is a large no, sizing labels on clothing doesn't help. Best advice I can give you is to just go by how you feel when you wear clothes you like. Not by scales. I know I want to lose a little bit due to how I like to feel in my jeans etc and I really can't afford to replace my wardrobe again 😂

That's nice, but for me personally a size 14 would be very overweight. When I've crept into a size 10 I look like I'm carrying a bit much.

BexAubs20 · 01/05/2025 11:11

Yes it’s considered large. I know this because I googled it a few weeks ago lol. I am also size 12-14 but only 5ft 2. I weight 11 stone. In nearly 40 and have carried, given birth to and breastfed 3 children. That’s at least 6yrs of my life where I’ve given my body up to my children. People call me fat. I was always a size 6-8. I think about my weight every min of every day. I work in a high pressure job and have a step daughter too so 4 kids and I always put myself last. I don’t have the time/ energy/ money to spend on myself going to the gym, buying weight loss pens or whatever. It’s always worse in the summer isn’t it?! When I do get feee time I just want to spend time with my kids/ lie down or sleep lol. One day I keep telling myself ONE DAY I’ll put myself first and get healthy/ happy again.
