Is a size 14 big?

Just that really. Been somewhere between a size 12-14 for the past 20 years. Even when I lost two stone I still fit into my size 12 clothes. Now I’m about 12 stone at 5,7 and a solid 14.

I definitely feel better around the 10.5 stone mark. I’m really struggling to lose weight. Sometimes I look at myself and can see a roll around my belly or feel like my face looks bloated and neither of these things make me happy or confident.

Equally when I’m dressed well I think I look ok. I know it’s totally subjective but in your opinion is a size 14 what you’d consider large? I don’t think I look obscenely overweight but I definitely would look and feel better with a few stone off.

You’re no more than about 4 kilos overweight at that height. It’s not much and is unlikely to mean that you will suffer serious health problems as a result. Take your waist measurement and if it’s less than half your height you’re unlikely to have issues due to weight

Umidontknow · 01/05/2025 11:14

I'm 5'3 11st and size 14 and yes I feel very big especiallyas im carrying it mostly round my middle. (I used to be very small). I am not happy at this size so am dieting. Ultimately its up to you though. If you are happy with it then it's not up to anyone else.

At 5ft 7 I'd say it's normal. Not slim, not fat.. just a normal adult woman size.
It depends on your body type as well obviously. I'm the same height as you and at 12 stone i was a size 10-12 not 14.
People carry weight differently. Just because you are in a bigger size doesn't necessarily mean you are heavier.

I"m 5'7 and 9 st 2 lb and I wear size 12. I'm def not overweight but you can't tell much from sizes on clothes. I can't stand it when it's too tight. My DH loves slim clothes that accentuates his little beer belly. Each to their own.

Of course a UK size 14 isn’t big in real life, and you’re unlikely to have an unhealthy BMI at that size. It’s just on Mumsnet where most people are a willowy size 8.

That’s probably why a lot of them are angry and miserable then lol 😂

policeandthebeef · 01/05/2025 11:10

That's nice, but for me personally a size 14 would be very overweight. When I've crept into a size 10 I look like I'm carrying a bit much.

Yes exactly, personally. Not everyone is overweight as a size 14

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/05/2025 11:19

It depends on the person. A size 8-10 is likely to consider a 14 large. Someone who consistently wears an 18 for example, will most likely not consider a 14 large. We carry weight differently too. I wear an 8 or a 10 depending on brand and I just look (and feel) better at that size than when I was bigger.

Justploddingonandon · 01/05/2025 11:20

I'm also 5'7" and a size 14. I'm about 12st so could probably do to lose a little, but I was also a size 14 (maybe a 12 in some shops) when I was 10st, which I am trying to get back to but that's mostly cause I felt better at that size rather than looks.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 01/05/2025 11:23

I'm your height OP and on the border of 12 and 14 (currently on a health kick to lose weight). I weigh 76kg now and definitely feel better for it. When I look at photos of me at 87kg (as I was at the beginning of this year) - I was a (large) size 14 and clearly overweight. Now back into healthy BMI and feeling better for it.

So I'd say yes - in the foothills of "big".

MassiveOvaryaction · 01/05/2025 11:25

I'm a size 20 now (medication/health condition/unable to exercise as I once did plus I do love food). I wish I was still as fat as I thought I was when I was a 14! I'm actually much more comfortable in my own skin than I was then though.

I guess people who've been a size 8 all their lives will say yup, 14 is big, whereas it's teeny tiny compared to someone who's always been larger.

JohnTheRevelator · 01/05/2025 00:21

I'm a size 16 at the moment, but I am steadily losing weight and I'd be happy to be a size 14. But I know that there will be many posters coming along and saying that a size 14 is 'Huge' and that they couldn't EVER imagine themselves getting that 'enormous'. One of the most ridiculous remarks I've ever heard (not on Mumsnet,I hasten to add!) was 'I think I'd kill myself if I ever went up to a size 14' (from a woman who was a size 8).

She’d probably do the world a favour if she did 🙄
—obviously NOT if she had an eating disorder OBVIOUSLY!

No, I honestly don’t think this is that big, but it also depends on how you carry the weight, is it evenly distributed or a lot in one area

Gwenhwyfar · 01/05/2025 11:28

Cynic17 · 30/04/2025 23:05

No. Below average, I think.

The average person in the UK is overweight so below average doesn't mean 'not big'.

Wahsingday · 01/05/2025 11:30

Depends what you mean by big? Aesthetically, or could be a healthy person. I think it is still possible to be healthy at a size 14 at your height. I also wouldn’t compare to the “average” UK woman- the average UK woman is not healthy or a great aim.

YosemiteTrail24 · 01/05/2025 11:30

yes I think its fat. Its not normal, its big.

Comefromaway · 01/05/2025 11:31

I'm 5'4 and when I was a Size 14 I looked a little overweight. (I was just under 13 stone). I'm now at the lower end of a Size 12 (very slightly over 10 stone) and am happy although a Size 10 would be my ideal.

A Size 14 at 5'7 would probably be equivalent to what I am as a size 12. It might be better for you to drop a little but I doubt you look overweight .

BennyBee · 01/05/2025 11:31

You have to take into account the vanity sizing that has crept into many stores - M&S is the worst culprit. What used to be a size 12/14 is now labelled as 8/10.
I guess they think they will sell us more clothes if they flatter us!

You said you prefer being lighter and feel better when you are, so I think you should find a good exercise plan and sustainable diet and stick to it. Set a goal and know that you can have some more chocolates etc when you are sitting in your svelte size 12s (or M&S 10s!)

Honestly, as we grow older, we do need to exercise if we want to maintain our flexibility, lung capacity and endurance. Muscle mass erodes every day as we age. I try to get to the gym a couple of times a week and run too - I feel better, I look better, and I age slower. Plus guilt-free beer and chocolate!

LoneAloneHere · 01/05/2025 11:32

Years ago as a 14 I thought I was fat, sadly now I am really very fat, and would love to be a size 14

AllTheChaos · 01/05/2025 11:32

At barely 5 foot and fine boned, when I was a size 14 I was obese. My tall, busty relative on the other hand looks like a goddess at a size 14. It’s totally individual and to do with height, build, shape, musculature etc. just go by what makes you happy.

northernballer · 01/05/2025 11:33

arcticpandas · 01/05/2025 11:14

I'm the same height and weight as you and am an 8 so just shows how there is no point comparing doesn't it!

OP most people won't think your big because most people genuinely don't care what other people look like. I never go about my life labelling people as big or small, I have enough to think about.

AllTheChaos · 01/05/2025 11:34

NB apparently size 12 is the average (unsure if mode or mean however), which is why as people are getting taller and broader, what a size 12 is has changed. So a 14 is slightly larger than average, but again, could be down to height and build.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 01/05/2025 11:34

I’m 5ft 1 and a size 12/14 now. Over 70kg and due to my height am nearly in obese BMI.

So it’s impossible to say without knowing your height and build.

StMarie4me · 01/05/2025 11:36

Gemmawemma9 · 30/04/2025 23:08

It would be unusual to be a U.K. size 14 and have a BMI within the healthy range.

OP, how do you feel? If you feel physically well and are happy with how you look and feel confident, that’s all that matters. Don’t worry about people’s perceptions.

Utter nonsense. I was 5’7”, 9.5st and my hips and boobs made me a size 14. BMI 20.8.

Don’t make statements that are factually incorrect, please.

Pyjamatimenow · 01/05/2025 11:37

I was a 14 at 5ft10 and 13st. I looked big

3amamama · 01/05/2025 11:37

Agree that it’s very dependent on height, build, musculature.

I would say though in terms of how I personally think of sizing - and only in relation to myself - 14 is my top line, when I’m there I know I need to do something about it and not get any bigger. That happened to me last year - not for first time! - and, as before, when I’ve shed a stone I’m a bit baffled and horrified how large I let myself get, how much extra fat I was just lugging about (because for me it is all fat it’s not muscle!!).

Iceandfire92 · 01/05/2025 11:37

Controversial and I'll definitely be flamed for this but we have to stop normalising size 16 or even 14 being a regular size for a woman. More people may weigh that amount these days but it is almost impossible to be a size 14 and at a healthy weight. I have been overweight before at a size 12, I know it is all relative to frames and how you carry your weight but everyone I know who is a size 14 is definitely overweight.
