Is a size 14 big?

fattytoadboy · 30/04/2025 22:58

Just that really. Been somewhere between a size 12-14 for the past 20 years. Even when I lost two stone I still fit into my size 12 clothes. Now I’m about 12 stone at 5,7 and a solid 14.

I definitely feel better around the 10.5 stone mark. I’m really struggling to lose weight. Sometimes I look at myself and can see a roll around my belly or feel like my face looks bloated and neither of these things make me happy or confident.

Equally when I’m dressed well I think I look ok. I know it’s totally subjective but in your opinion is a size 14 what you’d consider large? I don’t think I look obscenely overweight but I definitely would look and feel better with a few stone off.

Whether you look 'big' at size 14 will depend mostly on who you're comparing yourself with. In some company you'd look large by comparison, in others you'd look small, so its not really a useful way to think. You have decided that your body is bigger than you'd like it to be, and that's the relevant thing. Some people who are larger reassuring you its not big, and some people who are smaller upsetting you by telling you it is, probably balancing each other out in the process and leaving you none the wiser, makes no difference to your size or how you see it.

Thanks for all the comments. I recognise that we’re all different shapes and sizes and that my height/weight could look totally different on a different build.

I think I am a bit unhappy with myself. I get a bit paranoid about how I look in certain clothes, if my belly is visible etc. I look around at other women in my life (friends, colleagues etc) and compare myself.

All women have insecurities and we compare ourselves.

If it makes you feel any better, I look at women around your height and think how lovely they look (longer legs etc.) and get insecure women curvier than me have a more feminine figure.

My point is your feelings are valid and normal especially with all the filtering and photoshopped models on social media - just don't let it overtake your mind!

We should all work on being the best version of ourselves x

At your height it is not big, you are probably still overweight according to your BMI but that is a primitive measure of healthiness. A better measure is your fat percentage.

Enterthewolves · 01/05/2025 08:52

Waist:height ratio is a more reliable indicator of heart health in women than BMI https://www.nhs.uk/health-assessment-tools/calculate-your-waist-to-height-ratio

I’m 5’ 6" and 10st - I am a 12 on my bum and a 10 on top (total pear no boobs) and feel a bit tummyish, but am happy I’m healthy - it’s all subjective - I’d feel overweight if I went up to a 14 but only because it would all be on my arse and I’d look out of proportion!

Calculate your waist to height ratio - NHS

Check your waist to height ratio to find out if you’re carrying too much fat around your tummy.

Dress sizes mean nothing now. Every shop has a different measurement and a size 14 is smaller than it was 10 years ago (there was a programme on TV about it a few months ago).
You also can't compare what size or weight people are against each other. People carry weight differently and some look bigger at a lighter weight and smaller dress size.

I'm 5ft6 about 88kg (so about 12stone8lbs) so roughly near you. I'm just fitting back into a size 14. BUT my BMI is just in the Obese category.
Do I look large? I'd say yes compared to me 10 years ago but not massive. There is such a wide range of normal now that unless you are extremely overweight I don't think anyone looks big.
Could I do with losing weight? 100% probably about 15-20kg to be healthy - more from a health point of view than fitting into a dress size.

Gabby10 · 01/05/2025 08:53

I think a lot of this will depend on height. At your height no I wouldn’t think a 14 is big at all. I’m a ft shorter at in 14 look massive, but at the same time I can drop a stone and be in a size 8.

Ill be honest though I don’t really trust sizes, in some shops I can be a 10 and the shop next door I’ll be a 16! As long as you feel happy that’s all that should matter xx

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 01/05/2025 08:53

I would say it's big.

8-12 seems average.

SunnySideDeepDown · 01/05/2025 08:56

I don’t think it looks like on a 5’7” frame. It would on a 5’3” frame.

Relatively speaking it’s not large at all but health wise it’s probably still overweight and you may be at increased risk of certain illnesses in the future.

We tend to compare ourselves against other people when really we should probably strive for healthiness whether other people are or not.

Namechangetheyarewatching · 01/05/2025 09:00

Your BMI puts you in the overweight category.

26.3

You should be under 25 bmi

The best weight for your height is between 8 stone 7 pounds and 11 stone 5 pounds.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 01/05/2025 08:53

I would say it's big.

8-12 seems average.

That’s not the actual average size though in the U.K.

curious79 · 01/05/2025 09:06

Is it big? Is that subjectively or objectively? At 5 foot seven, a size 14 can look quite slim but it’s definitely starting to get on the porky side, even if it is below average for the UK. let’s face it we’re averagely fatties.
In Knightsbridge, you’ll be on the larger side. in Norwich you’ll be slim.
12 st is pretty solid and in the creeping fat zone. You’ll start being excluded from certain brands if that bothers you.

notgoig2careanymore · 01/05/2025 00:34

I have been looking at clothes and size 16 for shorts/ trousers out of stock and equally size 20-22 for shirts and tops. . This suggests that women are bigger than the shops think 😉

In my experience it's always the 12s and 14s that are out of stock. Garments on the sale rail always seem to be either size 8 or size 22.

andtheworldrollson · 01/05/2025 09:13

Is this large?
not compared to the uk as a whole
yes if you want to be healthy

crackofdoom · 01/05/2025 09:13

I'm the same height as you OP, and yes, you're technically overweight. I'm a 12 veering 14 at the moment and I'm 11 stone 2 right now. We had an allotment work day at the weekend and I stripped down to my vest because it was so hot. And I look pretty fat in the photos 😬

Topjoe19 · 01/05/2025 09:15

I'm 5'8 & a size 14. I definitely feel big in a lot of my clothes. I carry it all over but particularly have a big tummy post c-sections. I try to diet but keep eating sweet stuff which is my downfall! Before kids I never had a problem being strict if I needed to lose a bit! Now I have kids I find I snack to keep my energy up. But I'm using nutracheck & determined to lose about half a stone.

BobnLen · 01/05/2025 09:18

No, but I'm 5'10" and large framed, BMI around 22

Sdpbody · 01/05/2025 09:18

My arse/hips are always larger.

I have a BMI of 24 so only just in the normal range, but my tops are all a size 10, whilst my bottoms will be a size 14.

BigDahliaFan · 01/05/2025 09:21

I'm the same height as you and 12 stone 3 (ish) and a 14/16. I need to lose a stone (I've lost 2 over the last year - weight piled on in my 40s after I'd been a size 10 all my life up to them).

GP said my blood pressure, which is high, will come down.

I'm concentrating on my health though rather than a size. I'm exercising more, I'm more toned, I'm fitter - all of those things have made me fool good about myself as well as clothes fitting better.

Maybe that's a goal?

Middleagedstriker · 01/05/2025 09:22

I am the same height as you and weigh pretty much the same. I am definitely overweight. I'm currently doing the 16/8 fasting and have lost half a stone in a month. Definitely feel better for it in terms of fitness and agility.

Plan on losing another stone and the. Keeping with the fasting as it's so easy. I only do it 4 days a week and eat sensibly but no dieting.

Pickled21 · 01/05/2025 09:25

Your bmi puts you at overweight so I would say yes. However we all carry weight differently. I am shorter than you and at 12 stone I was obese but wearing size 14 trousers and jeans.

TweetingHurricane · 01/05/2025 09:28

It’s curvy, never think of it as fat. It’s below average (16) and to be honest it feels like I see more 18s now. So 14 doesn’t stand out at all but could lose a few pounds to be healthier.

TheMimsy · 01/05/2025 09:29

50, 5’ 11” and just moved down into a 14 and love it. But then I’d crawled up to a size 22 by last September.

All hail mounjaro, personal trainer, new love of home and gym workouts, swimming and walking!

so a 14 to me is still overweight on the bmi scales. But I’m happy with my body shape.

im not a slim build. I have broad shoulders and not a petit frame.

I could push to a 12 but I have always always always had a very curvy bum and hips (more pear than hourglass) and I’m not sure how that would go.

anyway - happy at a 14 and focussing on toning up more now and weight training.

TweetingHurricane · 01/05/2025 09:32

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 01/05/2025 08:53

I would say it's big.

No 16 is average and has been for 15 years at least

Funderthighs · 01/05/2025 09:35

Gemmawemma9 · 30/04/2025 23:08

It would be unusual to be a U.K. size 14 and have a BMI within the healthy range.

OP, how do you feel? If you feel physically well and are happy with how you look and feel confident, that’s all that matters. Don’t worry about people’s perceptions.

I’m a size 14 and weigh 10.5 stone. As I’m 5ft 8in, I’m in the ideal range for BMI. I rarely fit into size 12 clothing as I have big boobs and hips.

TweetingHurricane · 01/05/2025 09:35

In my experience it's always the 12s and 14s that are out of stock. Garments on the sale rail always seem to be either size 8 or size 22.

I can always find 12s, I notice the 14/16/18 out of stock a lot but 8/10s always left
It’s weird so many shops don’t stock accordingly
