Is a size 14 big?

fattytoadboy · 30/04/2025 22:58

Just that really. Been somewhere between a size 12-14 for the past 20 years. Even when I lost two stone I still fit into my size 12 clothes. Now I’m about 12 stone at 5,7 and a solid 14.

I definitely feel better around the 10.5 stone mark. I’m really struggling to lose weight. Sometimes I look at myself and can see a roll around my belly or feel like my face looks bloated and neither of these things make me happy or confident.

Equally when I’m dressed well I think I look ok. I know it’s totally subjective but in your opinion is a size 14 what you’d consider large? I don’t think I look obscenely overweight but I definitely would look and feel better with a few stone off.

Do you mean you are a size 14 going by the labels on your clothes?

Load of tosh

Size 18 and 58 I did my first half marathon and climbed our highest mountain

Sizes on clothes mean nothing, other then they are another stick we can hit ourselves with

If you are concerned about health risks, take your measurements and weight and use the online calculators and make your choice

I have lost weight because there was no hiding the fact at 12 stone and only just above 5 ft I was touching obese and my health was suffering - yeah I climbed a mountain and did a half marathon - but I struggled

Worked hard to lose two stone

Oh and a two stone loss and Im suddenly wearing size 8 jeans??? Seriously never ever in my life have I worn size 8,( I was wearing 14's ) younger years and a clean size 10 would be tight, now I can take a size 8 on and off without undoing the button and Ive lost just 2 stone - vanity sizing has gone absolutely mad and measuring the 8's to my 14's, there's not a lot in it

If you are fit , healthy and happy at a shop's idea of a 14, then that's all that matters.

If you aren't for any other reason then a label , then that's when you do something about it

Chungai · 30/04/2025 23:41

Exercise and eat well and you'll start to feel good about yourself regardless of size, IMO.

Growlybear83 · 30/04/2025 23:54

Of course a UK size 14 isn’t big in real life, and you’re unlikely to have an unhealthy BMI at that size. It’s just on Mumsnet where most people are a willowy size 8.

aquashiv · 01/05/2025 00:05

Not at all. Think thats perfectly fine

It's how you feel are you healthy

Itiswhysofew · 01/05/2025 00:16

I wish I could get down to a 14. I'm currently a large 16, heading towards 18, with a big fat belly😥 I don't overeat, maybe carb heavy, and I'm not a snacker. I would have to eat next to nothing in order to lose weight. It's so frustrating.

When I look at size 14s, they look small to me, and would seem impossible to achieve. As for size 10 & 12...those were the days.

JohnTheRevelator · 01/05/2025 00:21

I'm a size 16 at the moment, but I am steadily losing weight and I'd be happy to be a size 14. But I know that there will be many posters coming along and saying that a size 14 is 'Huge' and that they couldn't EVER imagine themselves getting that 'enormous'. One of the most ridiculous remarks I've ever heard (not on Mumsnet,I hasten to add!) was 'I think I'd kill myself if I ever went up to a size 14' (from a woman who was a size 8).

hehehesorry · 01/05/2025 00:22

It is quite big, a 10 or 12 would be much healthier but it's not permanent and not hard to fix when you feel like doing it. If you move up another size, that's when you should have more urgency about changing it.

VivienneDelacroix · 01/05/2025 00:26

Gemmawemma9 · 30/04/2025 23:08

It would be unusual to be a U.K. size 14 and have a BMI within the healthy range.

OP, how do you feel? If you feel physically well and are happy with how you look and feel confident, that’s all that matters. Don’t worry about people’s perceptions.

I'm the same height as the OP - 5'7" and a size 14, but weigh 10 stone. I have a healthy BMI. Even at 8st12 (my lowest adult weight) I was still a Sz12.
Having said that, I do feel "big" though and would love. I have boobs that never go below an F cup and I hate it.

AliceMcK · 01/05/2025 00:34

well I’ve just celebrated being a comfortable size 16 after being a size 22 at 5’2”. I’m extremely happy, getting to size 14 would be a dream.

I hate the bmi system, I was told when I was a skinny size 8 I was extremely obese, that stuck with me. What was never considered was my extremely heavy breast ( size G at the time), I’m a HH/J now and still my breast are not considered in my weight calculation.

Being 5’7” and size 14 would look pretty good to me, but it’s all relative. I now try to live by what I feel good in rather than what’s the right size according to an archaic weight system.

notgoig2careanymore · 01/05/2025 00:34

I have been looking at clothes and size 16 for shorts/ trousers out of stock and equally size 20-22 for shirts and tops. . This suggests that women are bigger than the shops think 😉

NattyTurtle59 · 01/05/2025 00:48

I'm exactly the same weight and height as you OP and I wear a 16, no way could I wear size 14. We are all different.

My BP was a bit high and when talking to my GP he looked at me, and said I was okay, didn't mention losing weight at all.

cardibach · 01/05/2025 00:58

WhySoManySocks · 30/04/2025 23:15

Yes. It used to not exist in the normal clothes range. Now it’s probably average, but it’s still large.

(I’ve just lost weight and gone from 14 to 12. I’m 5’7 and still fat in size 12, so understand the struggle and not judging anyone more than myself)

Eh? 14 didn’t used to exist in normal clothes? Nonsense. 16 is U.K. average.
Or are you taking US sizes?

fattytoadboy · 01/05/2025 07:56

Thanks for all the comments. I recognise that we’re all different shapes and sizes and that my height/weight could look totally different on a different build.

I think I am a bit unhappy with myself. I get a bit paranoid about how I look in certain clothes, if my belly is visible etc. I look around at other women in my life (friends, colleagues etc) and compare myself.

OnArainyNight · 01/05/2025 08:04

It depends on your height.

I used to be a size 14, and at 5 feet 3 inches tall, I was obese

broccolienthusiast · 01/05/2025 08:23

For me yea, but I’m only 5’4

OP is well into the overweight BMI category. I'm.not judging, so am I, but she is.

DUsername · 01/05/2025 08:29

I am overweight at size 14, yes. My waist to height measurement is also off at this size.

I don't feel it's particularly helpful to beat myself up about it though. I do lots of exercise and eat lots of nutritious food. I'll keep on trying to get the weight into a healthy range but I try not to get obsessed with it from a vanity point of view. I certainly have zero desire to be really slim - just healthy.

Geegee7 · 01/05/2025 08:32

I’m a 14 and I am overweight but not obese. I’m sporty (to that extent that I can run a 5-10k) and my weight doesn’t impact my day to day life, I’m feeling ok as I am. But my BMI is in the overweight category and I’d call myself overweight.

JustAnInchident · 01/05/2025 08:32

Well, a 14 not exactly slim but it’s certainly not massive either, particularly at your height. I’m 5’8 and normally a 14 (currently a bit bigger as had a baby a few weeks ago!) but my ‘happy size’ is definitely a 12. Much flatter stomach, slimmer thighs etc. With that being said, I don’t feel massive as I am though by any stretch of the imagination. I feel like a 14 is a proper ‘in-between’ size.
I guess it comes down to whether you’re happy or not and I guess from this thread, you’re not. Whether you’re unhappy enough to do anything about it is up to you but I’m well aware that it’s never quite as easy as just losing some weight!!

Hekett · 01/05/2025 08:37

I am 5 8 and technically overweight at a 12. It’s all based on your body composition and frame! You can also often be bigger but dress well, or smaller and dress less well…

Well saying something like that, just shows a level of complete insensitivity. I am a size 8, and would never say something like that. A size 14 would be big, for me, but I am not the OP.

SonK · 01/05/2025 08:42

Nope, I m 5ft3 and a size 10 / 12 and I am tiny!

A size 14 depending on build / height to me is either slim or average. You definitely sound slim at 5ft7 to me.

Also, I feel like most clothes are designed to look good on extremely slim and tall women and we end up comparing ourselves to the models.

I am on the short side and sometimes certain outfits don't look quite right on me because they're just not tailored for my height / proportions.

Maybe if you buy clothes in a slightly bigger size you can have it tailored to your specific body?

I know this would get expensive so just do it for a few outfits x

MonkeyTennis34 · 01/05/2025 08:43

I now feel healthy is more important than skinny
This with bells on!
It’s only taken me 55 years to realise this but it’s so true and important.
If you’re at an unhealthy weight, let that guide your eating/exercise habits, not because you feel you don’t conform to societal norms.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/05/2025 08:45

You’re putting the cart before the horse.
Don’t focus on your dress size. Look at the diet and lifestyle (in terms of exercise etc) that get you to where you are and ask yourself if they need tweaking.
If you get hung up on size you risk wasting a huge amount of time and energy thinking about calories while ignoring the issues which not only matter most in terms of health, but also make it harder to keep your weight stable.

Urgenthelplease · 01/05/2025 08:48

I'm 11st 5lbs and the same height but generally a size 10-12, boobs are a DD and carry weight on my thighs.

I do feel bigger at the moment, cusp of average and overweight on the bmi but my friends are considerably smaller.

To lose weight I need to cut way back on calories and it's not worth it. I look fine dressed and have no belly so I can't complain even post kids.

I do want to build muscle though. Key thing is you don't sound content.
