To think Lucy Connolly has been made an example of?

Have any of you read this article about Lucy Connolly who tweeted inflammatory comments following the Southport murders? I have to admit that at the time I was fully supportive of having her locked up, with the key thrown away. But reading this article made me view it all a little differently. Surely she has done her time?

She deserves everything she gets. Nasty cow.

BarMonaco · 06/04/2025 22:48

How about if someone tweeted wrongly accusing you of having killed children and encouraging people to burn your house down. I bet you'd be less sympathetic to her then.

Stripeyanddotty · 06/04/2025 22:50

Zero sympathy for her.
And as for Alison Pearson referring to her as a ‘British political prisoner’ 🙄

Wimbledonmum1985 · 06/04/2025 22:53

I read it too and was shocked. I had no sympathy for her but the article made me reconsider. There was a a lot I hadn’t known about the case, including the death of her child, her job as a childminder and the perspectives of the parents of her charges. I think she should be let out. She has paid a heavy price for a moment of madness.

Completely agree.

BarMonaco · 06/04/2025 22:58

The Telegraph wouldn't be so sympathetic if an immigrant had committed a crime after losing a child, instead of the wife of a tory councillor 🙄They were horrendous in the way they whipped up anti immigrant and EU sentiment before the referendum. No surprise they think someone should be forgiven for inciting people to burn down an asylum centre

QuillBill · 06/04/2025 22:59

I have got no sympathy for her. I can’t imagine how those people in the hotels that were being attacked by angry mobs felt.

Give me your address and I’ll do a post telling a load of people to burn your house down while your children sleep. It’s no trouble.

Now she’s exploiting being a mother to try and garner sympathy. And having an unwell husband. But she didn’t care about those other people being mothers or having husbands.

I agree

maddening · 06/04/2025 23:03

I don't think anyone should go to prison for tweets.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/04/2025 23:06

She's only being made an example of the same way other people who break the law and are imprisoned are made an example of. 🙄

WTF is Allison Pearson on these days?

Fancycheese · 06/04/2025 23:06

Of course it was a sympathetic article. It was the fucking Telegraph. She absolutely deserves it, as PP have stated.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 06/04/2025 23:08

Pay wall, op

What did she say that was so awful?

Keir starmer loves locking people up with insane sentences tbh but i won't pick a side just yet

CallMeFlo · 06/04/2025 23:10

Nah she deserves all she got. No sympathy for her

Stripeyanddotty · 06/04/2025 23:10

@mumofoneAlonebutokay

Connolly's post, which she later deleted, read: 'Mass deportation now, set fire to all the fing hotels full of the b*s for all I care...'
She later added: 'If that makes me racist, so be it.'

And it’s not actually Keir Starmer locking people up.

Really? If a person of colour had tweeted saying let's burn a building full of English white people to the ground, you'd be OK with that. And not want them jailed. Ok then...

Poonu · 06/04/2025 23:14

Can anyone find a link to read the article please

Courts decide sentences, not Keir Starmer. The sentencing guidelines for her offence actually allow for longer jail time than she got. So there's an argument to say she got off lightly. But of course, the Telegraph hasn't reported that.

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2025 23:16

The article is written by Allison Pearson so you fill in the blanks on what it will say.

Does anyone actually pay to read the Telegraph, I wonder.

JohnofWessex · 06/04/2025 23:17

Given what she said and what happened afterwards why should she not face the consequences of her actions?

SallyD00lally · 06/04/2025 23:17

maddening · 06/04/2025 23:03

I don't think anyone should go to prison for tweets.

Hmmm

So if someone tweeted your address and encouraged a mob to go round and burn your house to the ground, while you and your children were in it, you don't think they should go to prison?

Pull the other one.

CurlewKate · 06/04/2025 23:17

I can’t read the article-but considering the paper and the writer, I would expect them to support a white person posting a disgusting racist tweet.

Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f
hotels full of the b
for all I care, while you're at it take the treacherous government &
politicians with them. I feel physically sick knowing what these families will now have to endure.

If that makes me racist so be it.

That’s what the tweet said.

Edited

Oh okay, then i don't have any sympathy for her tbh but agree that the sentence is harsh

I'm unsure of the relationship between the pm and the sentencing guidelines for the riots, so I won't say more but when he was in charge of the cps during the 2011 riots, those sentences were silly

I feel like i read that he wants to introduce stronger punishments for peaceful protesting

He's the authoritarian that people claimed Jeremy corbyn was tbh
