To think Lucy Connolly has been made an example of?

Have any of you read this article about Lucy Connolly who tweeted inflammatory comments following the Southport murders? I have to admit that at the time I was fully supportive of having her locked up, with the key thrown away. But reading this article made me view it all a little differently. Surely she has done her time?

People do that to Jews and Israelis all the time.

In the case of Lucy Connolly, I don’t believe she encouraged anyone to burn anything. Much as I don’t think what she said was very nice, I don’t think it should be criminal. People should be free to say even horrible things

Well thankfully legally they’re not free to say horrible things.

BlackForestCake · 07/04/2025 00:04

Yes, it was a harsh sentence.

Yes, she was made an example of.

That's the point.

I think people should be allowed to say even racist, hateful things.

But when there are actual riots going on outside refugee hotels and you call for the refugee hotels to be burned down, that is incitement to murder and in this case the state rightly came down on her like a ton of bricks.

People could have been killed because of what she wrote.

That's why she's in jail.

That's nonsense.

Hitler was allowed to say "horrible things", inciting the biggest mass murder in human history.

That muslim cleric with the hook, he too was stirring up violence with his street gatherings.

americans justified the genocide of the Native people by dehumanizing them as savages in that white settler declaration. The Africans they (washington, jefferson etc.) imported as slaves were designated 3/5ths of a person in their race based constitution, and via slavery they were tortured and many were killed. Both racist documents come with a warning.

Thank Christ no impressionable idiot saw her message and followed it through.

This is it exactly.

Re. posters trying to argue she didn’t arrange it because no hotel addresses were given. The thing is she is being charged with inciting or stirring up racial hatred, she doesn’t need to have sent a google maps location to have met the criteria for that. Her disgusting tweet was enough.

The naivety of some to think you can say what you want.

That has never been the case.

You walk into an airport and jokingly shout "I have a bomb in my bag"..lets see how long it takes before you are wrestled to the ground and taken in by the authorities. You ain't making your flight any time soon.

That example is trivial in comparison to inciting racial hatred/violence.

It wasn’t Hitlers words that were the issue, it was his actions. The Muslim preacher with the hook was jailed for various terror offences including kidnapping. Slavery was a whole institution not just some hurty words (as was the third reich).

hate speech wasn’t the issue with any of those so it’s a bit of a strange post. Hitler murdered tens of millions of people. He didn’t just say something nasty.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/04/2025 00:23

Connelly didn't just say something nasty. She broadcast it to 10,000 people with the intent of stirring racial hatred following the murder of 3 children.

ilovesooty · 07/04/2025 00:26

I think she deserves every day of the unfortunately reduced sentence she's serving.

Part of genocide is dehumanisation. Likening people to animals, making their lives valueless and scapegoating them.

They're not just 'hurty words'.

SalfordQuays · 07/04/2025 00:30

She got a longer sentence than a man I just read about, who regularly physically and emotionally abused his partner for 2 years. That makes no sense to me.

nomas · 07/04/2025 00:34

maddening · 06/04/2025 23:20

Did she tweet an address and did people actually follow her direction? As I understand it she deleted it pretty quickly and it wasn't viewed by loads of people and no evidence that anyone was actually incited to violence by her tweet.

There is a difference between what she did and directly arranging an attack imo

It’s pretty easy to find out if there is an asylum centre near you.

Is there any reason why you should be safe but immigrants shouldn’t be?

halfpastten · 07/04/2025 00:43

She deleted the tweet after 4 hours.
Her child had died due to NHS incompetence, the death of children triggered her ptsd.
She was a childminder for several immigrant families who spoke very highly of her and she had written testimonials for some to help them gain residency.
Her husband is suffering from blood cancer and her 12 year old daughter is spiralling, they are suffering emotionally and financially.
She has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for an ill judged tweet which she deleted after 4 hours, and denied home leave which she is entitled to.
Since her arrest 77 pedophiles have walked free without custodial sentences.
Yes this is a travesty.
Anyone who thinks it is fair has not read the article in the Telegraph.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 06/04/2025 22:53

I read it too and was shocked. I had no sympathy for her but the article made me reconsider. There was a a lot I hadn’t known about the case, including the death of her child, her job as a childminder and the perspectives of the parents of her charges. I think she should be let out. She has paid a heavy price for a moment of madness.

I agree with this assessment. What she wrote was horrendous, but it seems there are mitigating factors.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 07/04/2025 01:14

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/04/2025 23:23

I know addicts who dont think their dealers should be locked up. Until what you think becomes the law, it's immaterial.🤷‍♀️

Edited

What people think isn't immaterial, because it affects how they vote.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/04/2025 01:14

I’m not comfortable with people going to prison for tweets, no matter how vicious or incendiary they are.

I’m also concerned about the number of men with 1000s of images of child rape on their computer that now avoid custodial sentences as a matter of course.

Just this week a woman who murdered her newborn over 20 years ago and didn’t confess until familial dna identified her as the mother walked free from court.

How is a tweet worse than murdering a baby?

sunsu · 07/04/2025 01:19

The loss of her son and PTSD from that should absolutely have been considered a mitigating factor. What she did was absolutely disgusting and there is no excuse for it. She should have received a punishment but she should not have been denied leave she was legally entitled to because they considered her a ‘risk to others’ but approved the leave of fellow inmates that actually caused the death of humans. Paedophiles are receiving far more lenient sentences. She deleted the tweet herself, 4 hours after posting it, because she realised it was OTT. Her punishment is too severe for the crime.

Kilroyonly · 07/04/2025 01:21

She was jailed for that comment!.. Ridiculous, just being made an example of, why can’t anyone British & white have an opinion any more

Unitarily · 07/04/2025 01:23

It’s a tricky one. What she wrote makes you recoil in instant disgust.

Equally I remember a time not long ago that ‘TERFs die in a fire’ or similar was pretty standard par on daily Twitter. Did I think omg these people are actually going to try and burn women alive. Or that they should be jailed. No I just thought they are complete pieces of trash and a disgrace.

I am not sure people should be jailed for tweets. Certainly not a one off moment of madness tweet. Maybe a continued campaign trying to radicalise others yes that becomes more jail worthy.

Either way she’s served her time absolutely and the whole thing is at this point completely unjust.

And I had no idea about her background and her son. That is just heartbreaking.

MyToasterCanLiveAgain · 07/04/2025 01:24

We (not white) were scared to go out for 2 days. There were lots of places in our town that were on that attack list that was apparently being circulated. I felt so sorru for the people working there. I suppose rhey closed and boarded up these places for the day but it must have been pretty unnerving. I csnt even imagine how the poor people felt whose hotels got attacked.

Our Kids had to be places so we tried to avoid at least the city centre. It was not fun having to explain to the kids why the colour of our skin might make us a target.

I guess I should be grateful that our house didn't get burnt down and we weren't actually attacked but I expect so much more from society.

Boredofbeinganadult · 07/04/2025 01:26

Cant believe she’s been imprisoned for 31 months!! Whilst actual criminals are getting let off for far worse. Makes me so angry. 31 months over a tweet. Pathetic.

xanthomelana · 07/04/2025 01:31

They let violent criminals out early to make room for people like this. I don’t believe they should have been fast tracked to prison either when you’ve got hundreds of criminals still walking the streets awaiting trail. It’s no wonder there’s so much tension regarding the whole situation with immigration in this country, when things like this happen it just makes it worse.

"People could have been killed because of what she wrote."

Nobody has to burn down a building because some idiot suggested it on social media though, do they?

I'm actually a little confused about the incitement thing. Surely responsibility for a criminal act should rest solely on the one who committed said act unless they were being blackmailed or had a gun held to their head, or something? It's like that old thing that our parents used to say when we were at school and tried to blame someone for leading us astray. "You wouldn't jump off a cliff if Sally told you to, would you?"

I am glad you’ve said this! When you hear that prisons are bursting and people have been released from prison half way through their sentences but they’ve got room to lock a woman up for 30 odd months over a tweet she deleted in a matter of hours just makes me so mad

ThisFluentBiscuit · 07/04/2025 01:44

It was a first offence; she's otherwise of good character; she deleted the tweet after 4 hours; and she's a carer to a husband with blood disease, which leaves her child a bit high and dry if she's in prison.

I think she should have got a suspended sentence, a fine, and community service.
