To think Lucy Connolly has been made an example of?

Have any of you read this article about Lucy Connolly who tweeted inflammatory comments following the Southport murders? I have to admit that at the time I was fully supportive of having her locked up, with the key thrown away. But reading this article made me view it all a little differently. Surely she has done her time?

Cant believe she’s been imprisoned for 31 months!! Whilst actual criminals are getting let off for far worse. Makes me so angry. 31 months over a tweet. Pathetic.

she is an ACTUAL criminal too, you know

Connelly didn't just say something nasty. She broadcast it to 10,000 people with the intent of stirring racial hatred following the murder of 3 children.

And I think intent here is a ridiculous word to use. Intent to me requires some kind of rational thinking, foreplanning or foresight. I am pretty sure no one had a rational and measured reaction immediately after Southport. Reeling anger and devastated shock and complete sadness was what I felt and assume most others did. And that’s without child loss PTSD. I cannot imagine how she felt but I feel confident guaranteeing it wasn’t measured or rational.

Yes, she is being used as an example. One reason laws exist is to govern and set standards. All hell broke loose last summer and tweets like hers fan the flames of societal unrest. Unfortunately, her words included references to the Government and other ill-considered phrases about burning down all the hotels, "deporting them all" and "if I am being racist so be it", etc. Arguably, yes, they're just words and don't warrant the sentence she received, but the purpose behind it is to deter anyone else from trying to emulate or repeat anything she wrote or to compel others to join the riots. She is just fodder like many of us so she was used to make an example of what will happen if you write any hateful tweets. She's neither connected nor wealthy to buy her way out like some others can and frequently do. It's horrible. She doesn't deserve it when looking at the case through a subjective lens: she's a mother who was triggered by what happened given her past trauma. Perhaps she felt as though she couldn't help herself. However, through another macro lens she's an unfortunate nobody who is, indeed, being made an expensive of so the rest of us didn't all pile on government and cause even more unrest.

100% this

Don’t make me laugh 😂 Do you genuinely believe this woman deserves to go to prison for 30 months for a tweet she made and then deleted? Prisons are full, take Huw Edwards for example, he had 41 images at least of child rape on his phone of children aged between 7-9 and yet he got to walk away whilst this woman is actually serving a sentence. There isn’t room in prisons to lock people up over a tweet. I know who I would rather have in prison. If you think this woman should be in prison then you have issues.

whippy1981 · 07/04/2025 02:18

In her own word she said if arrested she would 'play the mental health card'.

Curious where and when she said that? The Telegraph article should have mentioned that, if true.

I haven’t read one article on this “mental health card” quite either

Boredofbeinganadult · 07/04/2025 02:47

she definitely had reason to play that card if she wanted to, she shouldn’t even be in prison in the first place. The more I read about this case the worse it gets

TheGentleOpalMember · 07/04/2025 02:51

A rapist had no prison sentence because it was a 'first offence'. If rapists and around 77 paedophiles aren't getting prison sentences, for crimes that actually physically hurt women/children, then neither should this woman, as racist and ignorant as she is.

I genuinely believe if she were a male, she would not be in prison right now.

She made a choice. She was in full control of her behaviour. She chose to commit the crime. Shit happens.

Some males were jailed for their tweets.

Sadly rape is the most legal illegal crime in the UK much like driving at 71mph, illegal but you're not going to get done for it and men should be held accountable but they are not. I say this as someone who had a confession from my rapist and who had the police excuse it.

Unfortunately we have a quota on rape cases to fudge conviction data. That is why rapists walk free. That and a system built by men to protect men.

Let’s hope you never experience ptsd or trauma from your child dying that might trigger you to make an irrational and stupid mistake that you later regret.
Real criminals are being treated better than her, you’ve got some issues if you believe she deserves 30 months for a tweet.

maddening · 06/04/2025 23:03

I don't think anyone should go to prison for tweets.

She went to prison for breaking the law, not for 'tweets'.

No sympathy whatsoever here. She played silly games and won silly prizes. Hopefully it deters others.

Langdale3 · 07/04/2025 04:11

No sympathy, it’s a nasty crime.

This. It seems that our government doesn’t care as much about women or children’s safety, I have no doubt these rapist and child abusers will reoffend but as long as people can’t write bad words on the internet we are safe.

Simonjt · 07/04/2025 05:25

If someone doesn’t want to spend time in prison they should also then choose not to break the law. If you look at guidance you’ll see she wasn’t made an example of as she has a shorter sentence than the max available for the crime she chose to commit. If she valued her husband and daughter she would have put their needs over her own desire to be a violence inciting racist who intends to perverse the course of justice.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 07/04/2025 05:34

Gosh, so it wasn't the first time she had expressed some really abhorrent views. What's wrong with being Somalian? They're perfectly nice people. As if white British people never commit crimes! And, not every crime is committed by undocumented immigrants, or "boat people" in her language. Jesus. If she came from some war-torn and/or desperately poor country, or a country that was under a cruel dictator, I'm sure she'd try to come here, too. No compassion whatsoever.

beetface · 07/04/2025 06:33

I wonder how the kids from those hotels she said should be burned down are doing now? I wonder how every kid who looks or sounds different was feeling then and now. I wonder how much fear every parent in one of those hotels had for their children and still has. Nasty piece of work. No sympathy for her.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 07/04/2025 06:39

Incitement is extremely dangerous and needs to be dealt with using the appropriate sentence to ensure that it is seen as a strong deterrent.

JoyousEagle · 07/04/2025 06:40

halfpastten · 07/04/2025 00:43

She deleted the tweet after 4 hours.
Her child had died due to NHS incompetence, the death of children triggered her ptsd.
She was a childminder for several immigrant families who spoke very highly of her and she had written testimonials for some to help them gain residency.
Her husband is suffering from blood cancer and her 12 year old daughter is spiralling, they are suffering emotionally and financially.
She has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for an ill judged tweet which she deleted after 4 hours, and denied home leave which she is entitled to.
Since her arrest 77 pedophiles have walked free without custodial sentences.
Yes this is a travesty.
Anyone who thinks it is fair has not read the article in the Telegraph.

There were children in the hotel, she wasn’t that bothered. And after she said that she’d “play the mental health card” it makes her claims that her mental health problems made her do it less credible imo.

On the paedophile point, I think that is an issue with sentences for other crimes being not harsh enough, not with hers being too harsh.

I don’t like it when people say “anyone who thinks X clearly hasn’t read enough about it”. People can disagree. I’ve read the article. I disagree with you.

IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear · 07/04/2025 06:43

I have no sympathy for her whatsoever, her behaviour was reprehensible.

The judge quotes it in the sentencing remarks. She texted it to a friend.
