She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

I'd be saying, my treat? Sorry I thought it was yours as you suggested the takeaway and picked Indian. You went to use your app which was not working so I let you use mine. That was not me offering to pay. I said we would sort the payment later, now is later.

Loub1987 · 22/03/2025 21:48

Who doesn’t do online banking? How is it even possible?

thenightsky · 22/03/2025 21:48

Most I've paid is £72 for a massive blow out boxing day treat for 5 people.

Although... if I'd offered to cook, I'd be torn about if it was my treat. I'd probably just cave in and pay.

On the list was

Butter chicken
Sweet Naan x3
Rice
Vindaloo and rice
Coke 1Ltr
Delivery fee £5

Sweet Naan Alabama🎼

‘Oh right. I didn’t realise but never mind!! I’ll have to go into branch cos I don’t do online banking. Or I can hand * the cash to give you, she lives nearby doesn’t she’

Surely you just reply with, “I was going to cook but you wanted take away and said your apps werent working so I ordered for you. Why would that be my treat? It’s a bit weird not to do online banking so just sort out the money asap.”

Just checked my local Indian takeaway. All of this food comes to around £24. Would be £29 with the fiver delivery fee.

Where the F are they getting £52 from?! Shock

Also, this woman sounds like a shit friend. I'm sure you can do better!

thenightsky · 22/03/2025 21:49

Thebloodynine · 22/03/2025 21:47

You both got rice; who ordered 3 naans? I cant believe it was £52 with no starters!

oh yes... this. No way 2 people need 3 naans and 2 boxes of rice FFS. Crazy.

JacqFrost · 22/03/2025 21:49

I'd be tempted to consider this as a lesson learnt and red light about her as a friend and cut her off. To put across the treat excuse after you specifically requested her share of the money says a lot about her as a friend.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/03/2025 21:50

What's with the "my takeaway is cheaper than your takeaway" and the "did you really eat double carbs?" competition?

It's not relevant to the OP.

Hwi · 22/03/2025 21:50

Don't penny-pinch, but cut her out of your life - you have been given a sign of what she is really like - you don't need friends like that. But don't make a scene of who owes whom, just phase her out.

Some people don't. I bet the OP's 'friend' does though! Wink

Spaghetti with a tyre

not surprised she'd rather have a takeaway!😁

MsBucket · 22/03/2025 21:50

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/03/2025 21:47

Oh dear, she'll have to go into the branch then won't she, like it's the 20th century.

By the way, if she can save her card details to the Just Eat app, she can do online banking.

Exactly. The friend’s message sounds confusing. @OnePeachA Please message her the exact amount she owes, making sure to deduct the Fanta, and tell her to give you the cash. She’ll probably need to go to an ATM or the local branch if she doesn’t do online banking 🙄.

It's a discussion. People can say what they like.

They could start their own thread about that though, if they think it is so interesting.

3 naans between 2 people?! We share one between us and that’s plenty.

MySweetGeorgina · 22/03/2025 21:55

If she thought all along it was your treat, why did she (pretend) to order it through her own phone to start with?

she’s trying her luck

ForestFox44 · 22/03/2025 21:56

Her replies are so rude! I'm cringing for her who tries this hard to get out of paying £30 😅😬

YoSuchie · 22/03/2025 21:56

Gosh, everything’s working against her putting her hand in her purse, isn’t it? She sounds quite skilled at evasion.
Don’t let her embarrass you. She wants something, she pays, as we all do.

Can you reply with "Sure - pop the £x in an envelope and drop it in the letter box when you're passing. I'd rather you didn't get X involved in our issues - it's really no bother for you to drop it off, right? If I don't have it by Monday, I'll be back in touch with you then"

She’s clearly still trying to wriggle out of it. Just reply “ok could you give it to X by next weeked then, thanks.” If it doesn’t , send her a reminder every few days until she’s shamed into it.

First of all, this. Stop being so petty and critical you nitpickers. It's boring.

Secondly, she sounds quite seasoned in the ways of cheeky fuckery.
Now she's intimating it will be a hassle to pay you, anticipating you'll just tell her not to worry about it.

Could be wrong, but she appears to be rather calculated doesn't she?
