She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

I’m a MASSIVE eater, I’d have four nanns to myself, chips, rice, starters, sides, mains the lot?

Is that ok with you? Shall I send you my address so can send the food police?

👮

And then would you argue that it's an appropriate amount of food for your body and anyone who didn't eat that much had food issues and was miserable?

HellDorado · 23/03/2025 14:01

you are very defensive. Are you a big eater?

How unnecessary.

Bitofanchange · 23/03/2025 14:01

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 14:00

Teeny tiny eaters would not be ordering from an Indian takeaway I can assure you. I am far from a teeny tiny eater myself.

Oh maybe they would, s cube of chicken and give grains of boiled rice would be acceptable?

Stop policing people.

Stop normalising behaviours that are contributing to the obesity endemic.

It reminds me of smokers who say 'maybe' smoking is bad for people but...

@Bitofanchange you are very defensive. Are you a big eater?

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe we often eat curry leftovers, but I would chuck the rice, and reaheated naan isn't very nice.

I'm not a great cook but I'm a very good re-heater. I wouldn't chuck the rice (I don't make good rice) - I would add a splash of water and microwave. The naans are also very nice re-heated in the microwave for 40 seconds.

I saw a comment from a poster on another thread that in the UK we are too cautious about rice and reheating it... and that if rice were actually such a risk, many millions elsewhere who eat it every day would be dead; and they're not.

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 14:03

Crikeyalmighty · 23/03/2025 13:49

It is not the same saying ‘you host it- you pay ‘ - if the host had said, do you fancy a curry instead, saves me cooking, my treat- then that’s different- but personally for manners and finances sake I wouldn’t go to someone’s house presuming I could suggest whatever I fancied and expect them to pay for both of us

Exactly. It’s ridiculous to suggest that OP should automatically be paying for it just because it’s in her home.

Her reply says

‘Oh right. I didn’t realise but never mind!! I’ll have to go into branch cos I don’t do online banking. Or I can hand * the cash to give you, she lives nearby doesn’t she’

I imagine that she will try to leave it as long as possible and you'll forget it

No it’s the fact they all jump on a thread that does not ask about portions to tell the OP that she’s eating too much.

Just why? No one asked them! MYOB! No one is interested in what you eat, if you’re going to comment, then expect counter arguments.

It’s that simple!

Given everything coming from an Indian restaurant is drowned in ghee, butter or oil then not really. I never eat any it it when I'm in a slimdown phase although I enjoy it about once a month during other periods.

I’ve been reheating rice for over forty years, never had a single problem. I do put it in the fridge overnight though.

I would highly recommend a rice cooker, I couldn’t be without one now.

I always reheat rice, my DH always cooks to much. Never an issue.

Christ almighty is there no thread the food police won’t come to holier than thou on?

We’ve had the
double carbs horror
gluttony
piggery - tinkly laugh
obese / obesity epidemic
ToO MuCH FOod based on their own appetites

On a thread that’s wasn’t a discussion on food.

And the usual resort when they get policed back
’teeny tiny eaters shouldn’t have to be insulted by the piggies. The judgement only goes one way. This is DISCRIMINATION’

Just piss off and lick your lettuce on your own threads you tedious bores.

I'd be saying, my treat? Sorry I thought it was yours as you suggested the takeaway and picked Indian. You went to use your app which was not working so I let you use mine. That was not me offering to pay. I said we would sort the payment later, now is later.

I really like this response!
Its laying it all out, no hints or passive aggressive silence or anything.

I didn't see anybody say the OP was eating too much. The order was very strange. It sounds like the friend over ordered and then assumed she wasn't paying. I've a family member who behaves like that.

Why are you posting like this? It's really annoying to keep having posters with food issues (whatever they are), bouncing onto a thread and derailing it with finger-wagging.

You have no idea what other people eat or how much so why blether on with your 'normalising obesity' rant? I think that people who do this, unasked for, on a chatboard are lacking people in real life who will pay attention to them.

I have had bacillus cereus poisoning and felt so ill. As a result I am very risk averse with rice these days. I keep naan bread in the freezer so would just heat one of those to eat with my leftover curry.

HellDorado · 23/03/2025 14:08

BatchCookBabe · 23/03/2025 13:42

Sounds like you're projecting. Some people eat more than others, some people eat less than others, some people are satisfied and full with less food, and are OK with half a large takeaway naan bread.

No need to make spiteful little digs against people who aren't big eaters. I mean the odd little 'joke' is OK now and again, as I know some people find it incomprehensible that some people don't eat as much as them, but spiteful jibes like this are just unnecessary.

Some people have eating disorders, and feel bad for eating 'too much' and the teeny tiny jibes constantly spouted on here time and again are just plain nasty, and tedious, and really quite pathetic.

There is no need whatsover to make rude comments about smaller eaters. As I said, you're clearly projecting your food and appetite issues on here. (Like a few others!)

Edited

If these people weren’t derailing the thread with “But it’s just soooo much foooood!!!” when it’s not relevant, nobody would have anything to comment on.

Seriously chill. Newsflash, you don’t have to eat your portion in one sitting, you can actually divide it up if you want, it’s allowed. 🤦‍♀️ Did you know restaurants will even let you take your left overs home to eat later, yes really, it’s a thing.

But no one asked for your opinion on that, yet we have to read all your trope!

Go and start your own thread about an Indian takeaway!
