She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

Coal?! Coal?! @PeggyMitchellsCameo ?!
Och! I've heard of Coal... I've dreamt of it, never got to hold it, never mind be such a wastrel as to nearly DROP it!!
We get our fuel from chasing the sheep and haggi around the hills to catch the droppings to burn as fuel!

It’s all luxury here. 18 hours on the loom doesn’t phase me.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 23/03/2025 07:17

Has Just Eat but doesn’t do online banking?
Has she no shame?
I can remember going to a cashpoint for the first time. In 1985.
If she had any sense of shame she’d have gone to one yesterday and dropped the money round.
Also - you’d already bought everything to cook a meal as well.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 23/03/2025 07:21

She's a CF!! It was her idea to get an Indian and she said her app didn't work so you had to order and she ordered more than half the £52 order?! So she did all that expecting you to pay!

Make sure she pays you.

I don't believe she doesn't have Internet banking either. How was she going to pay for just east? Can she do a card payment or PayPal?

storminabuttercup · 23/03/2025 07:25

I refuse to believe someone with insta wouldn’t do online banking it’s different to say Facebook where it’s full of erm older folk who think the M&S posts are sent directly to them

she’s deffo a cheeky mare, firstly to suggest takeaway when you planned to cook, then to bring snacks and take them home but to refuse to pay her share is rude as hell

I don’t think you’ll see the money I’m afraid

Mycatsasuperstar · 23/03/2025 07:29

If she doesn't do PayPal either, check if you can send a payment link from your acct, I mean if she can use her card to pay for things online she can pay on payment link. I wonder if it was her plan though all along... Making out her app didn't work.... Convenient

Fins2025 · 23/03/2025 07:37

She’s lying. Of course she has online banking, or PayPal or something. You can probably find her Paypal account yourself if you know her email address.

Sounds like she is going to do everything she can to avoid paying you back, you’re going to have to be ruthless with her!

MidnightMeltdown · 22/03/2025 22:55

Surely if you’re ordering a rice each you don’t need naan? You’re supposed to order one or the other 😂. No wonder it was expensive!

Actually, you’re “supposed” to order whatever you want, thats why there’s a menu.

OP I used to have a friend like this- would suggest eating out or takeaways then let someone else pay and said they thought it was a treat. She’d have planned this before she even got to your house.

You won’t see that money.

Spaghetti with a tyre

No wonder she wanted a takeaway.!😂

TheOnlyWayisGerard · 23/03/2025 07:50

Has anyone got any smelling salts for the poor, simple delicate flowers who cannot comprehend that other people may have different appetites and tastes to them? I’m sorry you’re still stuffed from your Christmas lunch, maybe by Easter you’ll be able to manage half a Ryvita. Back in the real world, leftover Indian food is one of life’s biggest joys, and I purposefully order extra to allow for this. When I’m paying of course, I wouldn’t do this if someone else was footing the bill.

No wonder she wanted a takeaway 😅 Only joking, you're not being unreasonable at all! Hope she coughs up.

Her reply says

‘Oh right. I didn’t realise but never mind!! I’ll have to go into branch cos I don’t do online banking. Or I can hand * the cash to give you, she lives nearby doesn’t she’

Excuses. I don't think you will hear from her again.

Was that meal really just for two people?

Beint a nit picker I have just priced the meal up from our local Indian, and it would have cost about £45. It is a restaurant that does takeaways, not just a takeaway.

This conjured such a visual image! 😆😆

There is a thing called cheese wheel spaghetti. It’s pasta served in a whole parmesan wheel. Yuk! 😅

That sounds delicious to me 😋

FannyBawz · 23/03/2025 08:18

I can’t imagine any man wringing his hands over this. Tell her to Cough up.

if she does she Knows where she stands with you.

Dee00 · 23/03/2025 08:22

She’s so cheeky, but if it were me I would probably message her “don’t worry, next time you can treat me” and leave it at that.

Just chalk it up to experience and you never know, she might shock you and invite you to hers in return, but, if you don’t hear from her then you’ll know your better off without friends like her.

If she doesn’t do online banking, how did she have the JustEat app in the first place? She said hers wasn’t working!

Holdonforsummer · 23/03/2025 08:26

if she came to yours and you were going to cook, I would assume the food bill was on you!

Why? She suggested takeaway. Even if she hadn't, I'd never expect a friend to pay all the takeaway, that's greedy and grabby.

Noperope · 23/03/2025 08:28

thenightsky · 22/03/2025 21:49

oh yes... this. No way 2 people need 3 naans and 2 boxes of rice FFS. Crazy.

The friend also ate crisps!

<fans self>

CellophaneFlower · 23/03/2025 08:28

There's a huge mark up on the Just Eat prices, that's why it's expensive. We order direct from the restaurant. Our indian also has a 20% discount code, which only ever takes about 8% off 🤷‍♀️. Better than nothing I guess!

Personally I'd just write it off (if affordable), reply "oh don't worry, you obviously need the cash more than me" then block her. Life's too short to fill it with CFs.

Hunterdorm · 23/03/2025 08:35

Holdonforsummer · 23/03/2025 08:26

if she came to yours and you were going to cook, I would assume the food bill was on you!

Why? I can't imagine being so rude as to going to a friend's house when they had intended to cook and instead suggesting we order a takeaway in the first place. If it was my decision to order a takeaway instead of a nice meal the OP already planned and shopped for, I would have actually expected to be the one paying for the whole thing, not the OP!

Holdonforsummer · 23/03/2025 08:38

i just feel the person hosting is the one who provides the food and I would expect the same on the return visit.

Food was being provided by the OP but that wasn’t what the CF wanted. If the host has got food in and the guest wants to order takeout, then it’s more than fair to split the bill

nonevernotever · 23/03/2025 08:41

Just added that up from our local Indian takeaway (from their menu not just eat) and came to within a pound when I'd included delivery. Clearly there is a lot of variation around the country. That is a lot of rice and bread though!

Dee00 · 23/03/2025 08:43

I tend to agree with you. I would never expect someone to pay anything if I invited them to my house. I would also of had some wine in for her.
But I would have discussed prior, what food she liked and agreed what to cook/order.
