She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Friend came to my house

I was going to cook but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually

Her JustEat app wasn’t working so I said have a look on mine for places that are open. She picked Indian.

I put everything I wanted in and she added hers. Total came to £52ish. Over 65% of that cost was hers.

I said I could just check out and sort it later. I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat?

I said oh, we must have got crossed wires then. She said ‘I did cover the shop’

She went to the corner shop for wine and snacks. I got a Grape Fanta!

Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?

i just feel the person hosting is the one who provides the food and I would expect the same on the return visit.

The host offered to cook. It was the cheeky friend who instead asked to order takeaway, then couldn't because her app didn't work.
Sounds like she had it planned all along to get you to pay. Doesn't sound like a great friend to me.

RampantIvy · 23/03/2025 08:47

It looks like a few CFs have joined the thread. If I was going to cook for a guest then they decided that they would prefer a takeaway I would not be paying for their meal.

That said, I would have checked with them beforehand that the meal I was cooking was what they wanted to eat.

Thunderpants88 · 22/03/2025 21:17

I can’t BELIEVE anyone would have the balls to say “oh I thought it was your treat” when being reminded to pay for something they suggested, ordered and ate.

nightmare

I would reply “no not my treat. I was planning on making spaghetti and had bought the ingredients. Your total is £33.05 - £2 for the Fanta you brought = £31.05. Here are my bank details. Fire me a wee text when you have transferred it 👍 thanks”

please update us

This. Perfect!

It’s all luxury here. 18 hours on the loom doesn’t phase me.

I read that as “18 hours on the loo” doesn’t faze you. You reminded me of my BIL..,

"Sorry hun, cant afford to treat anyone in this ecomnomy 😆 Send me £X for the food and I'll send you £2 for the fanta."

😂yes, try this. Crossed wires, or she did this on purpose

Who doesn’t do online banking? How is it even possible?

And who doesn't use cash point machines... she actually has to go into a branch. Her "never mind' would wind me up too. I'd not persist with this friendship.

LivelyHare · 23/03/2025 08:53

Ha ha you won’t see that money again, OP. No online banking my arse.

FootTapping · 23/03/2025 08:55

I would just let her get the next one.

NoWayRose · 23/03/2025 08:58

So weird that CFs are willing to swap a friendship for one free takeaway, as that’s what she’s done. Especially if there was a home cooked meal on offer … if she didn’t have the cash, why not go for that

Was out with a lovely longstanding friend last week and the waiter was laughing at us because we were both fighting to be the first to handover our card and pay the bill.

Viviennemary · 23/03/2025 08:59

It's cheeky. She should go half. Since she suggested it.

That’s me and my mum. She’s 81 years old and she’d wrestle Tyson Fury to the floor to be the one who pays the bill.

Surely if you’re ordering a rice each you don’t need naan? You’re supposed to order one or the other 😂. No wonder it was expensive!

She wasn't expecting the freebie train to stop so soon.

Some people have trouble asking for money back. And that's the golden ticket for a freeloader.

Sez who? Honestly, all this monitoring and faux horror on this thread about peoples food choices. Was it handed down to Moses on a tablet that thou shall order either rice or a naan. Never both? 🙄

Exactly. It's so tiresome and completely irrelevant.

That’s what I read too. 😂 Thought for a second someone else must have been eating the spaghetti tyre!

Spaghetti with a tyre

Well, it’s no wonder she suggested getting a takeaway…

I really cannot get my head around people being this cheeky. Imagine potentially losing a friendship/making a friend feel uncomfortable and awkward over a curry. The mind boggles.

Well done for standing your ground, OP.

Banging order by the way.
I am laughing at the “why rice AND naan?! you’re supposed to have one or the other!” comments. Try telling that to my Indian grandmother, you’d get a swift slap around the cheeks with the naan.

Missing the point but 3 nans for 2 people!

Teenytinyness notwithstanding, that is a bit much. Not least because they tend to be the size of a hearth rug from Indian takeaways... (Like the one in this pic.) Sometimes they're bigger than this one! Me and DH share one, and we are not 'teeny tiny!'

Oh, we do have rice too. But just one between us! (well, maybe we're a teeny bit teeny tiny!) 😆 We do have a curry between us too, but also a bag of chips between us, and 3 or 4 poppadoms each! And sometimes a couple of onion bhajis each. All together that is quite filling - for us!

She ordered a Curry and hasn’t paid me

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 22/03/2025 20:58

£52 for 2 Indian meals?!!!😨

She ordered via JustEat - there's always a premium for using a 3rd party app to order. We phone our favourite Indian restaurant and collect the food ourselves - saves about 1/3 of the cost.

This has been one of those threads that I missed out on because we were out last night. I've been giggling all the way through the thread. Thanks for the entertainment!! The tyre gives a very visual image that is hard to shake off!! 😂

JMSA · 23/03/2025 09:28

The ONLY way this level of cheekyfuckery could be justified, is if she paid for a takeaway last time you were at hers.
I’m guessing not though Grin

ToYouFromMe · 23/03/2025 09:30

She was willing to order, therefore pay until she noticed her just eat app wasn t working??
Reverse roles...say you actually thought it was HER treat ,but you ll accept half, not all of the money
It was her suggestion after all.
If you were cooking dinner you d have paid for and prepared the food, but she requested the takeaway.
Her bag
