Help! I've no idea how to deal with this without offending. Since a new female employee has started working with us there are shoe prints on toilet seat. It's a corporate office but only a few females use this toilet so obvious who the culprit is. The lady is from India and new to country. She's very professional and I think this is a cultural difference but I'm horrified she thinks this is ok? What would you do??

Why would you do or say anything? How does this affect you?

Bristollocalknowledge · 19/03/2025 20:36

You get signs to stick up in toilets for this reason. University use them.

GuevarasBeret · 19/03/2025 20:36

Put a sign up, and provide seat wipes?

Hygiene? Shoe soles are not clean.

Because you’re putting your bare skin where somewhere has stood with outdoor shoes?!?

OP, yes I would speak to her and suggest she lift the seat if she wishes to squat on the bowl.

PaintDecisions · 19/03/2025 20:38

Just put some signs up. It's pretty common in multi cultural workplaces.

You'll find examples online.

Littletreefrog · 19/03/2025 20:38

Lots of places have signs advising with photos that standing on the seat is not allowed. Get some of them but put in to ALL toilets not just the ones she is using.

Neither are arses. Wipe it or hover?

PussInBin20 · 19/03/2025 20:39

Someone at my DH’s work did this, but a male who promptly broke it!

Tikeahulilly · 19/03/2025 20:40

That's gross. Get some signs and some wipes

Eeew the things I probably walk through on my commute are MUCH worse than my freshly washed bottom cheeks on a loo seat.

So gross..

Really do you not think this is unhygienic? Not being sarcastic, I'm just interested to understand the viewpoint where this is a reasonable thing to do for the next user of the toilet.

I would not want to be using a toilet that has outdoor shoes on the seat, or even has had bare feet on - varucas and foot fungus!

Toilet seats are not designed to be stood on so it risks damaging the seat. The woman could then fall and be injured or there is a nice hairline crack in the seat ready waiting to trap your bum the next time you sit down.

I've seen signs like this before in university toilets. I'd put them up in all the toilets.

greenbirds · 19/03/2025 20:42

This is a common problem in our student residences and came to our attention after repeated toilet seat breakages.

The solution was to buy signs making it clear that the toilets should be used to sit on, not squat on. They are easy to find online and save having an embarrassing conversation with your colleague.

Hazel665 · 19/03/2025 20:43

I worked in Singapore for a while. Notices about this on the door of every ladies' loo in every office building.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 19/03/2025 20:44

No one has caught an illness through the skin on their bum cheeks. It's not gross, it's just culturally different.

frillygillymilly · 19/03/2025 20:44

A butt cheek is not the same as the bottom of the shoe & this may not apply to you but most people's a-holes will fit in the seat hole...

Why can't the woman standing on the seat wipe after herself?

livelovelough24 · 19/03/2025 20:44

Yes, this is definitely a cultural thing, but it should be not allowed. Where I live, we have signs all over the place showing that you are not to stand on the seat, that is not what it it designed for.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 19/03/2025 20:46

You need signs. It's only a matter of time before either the seat or the toilet pan breaks and someone gets hurt.

MagicPharmacist · 19/03/2025 20:35

It beaks the toilet and means op has to clean the toilet before sitting on it.

Don't you wash the back if your legs or anything?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 19/03/2025 20:48

The men do this in the disabled toilets of a service station i frequent when they want a shit. The seats are knackered, barely hanging on and a weight shift when sitting on it properly can send it sliding with a very sharp jutting motion by a few inches, i've nearly fell off and hurt myself a few times! They drench the floor and leave their arse rinsing cups nicked from the self service on the sink too, and never use the provided toilet brush. They're genuinely dangerous to use now if you're not steady on your feet and don't have great balance. I doubt signs would help tbh, if they're used to squat toilets they don't want to use western toilets the way they are intended.
Makes me wonder if cultural toilet use practice is a protected characteristic as its fear of being branded racist why i haven't complained about the service station disabled toilets.

My god the entitlement! Everyone has to “wipe or hover” because one person decides to stand on the loo.

SteelyEyed · 19/03/2025 20:49

@MagicPharmacist reading the responses, I think you've had your arse handed to you

pun intended 😂

MagicPharmacist · 19/03/2025 20:52

Haha to be honest I was thinking of public loos as where I work it’s a shared loo with the public. It always looks clean but you never know what’s been on the loo seat so I always wipe it first out of habit. And I’m sure people do worse than stand on the seats.

I suppose in an office with only a few other people you’d expect the loo to be fairly hygienic.

Maybe you should say something after all 🤣
