Help! She's standing on the toilet seat!!

Help! I've no idea how to deal with this without offending. Since a new female employee has started working with us there are shoe prints on toilet seat. It's a corporate office but only a few females use this toilet so obvious who the culprit is. The lady is from India and new to country. She's very professional and I think this is a cultural difference but I'm horrified she thinks this is ok? What would you do??

Why is this a new thing over here though? We’ve always had Indian people living here but I’ve only heard of the standing on loo seats thing recently.

It’s not a new thing. People just have more of a voice than they did years ago. We all know about OP colleague whereas 40 years ago she would only have been able to tell a handful of people IRL.

  1. I don't think the OP is in Asia.
  2. Toilets in the UK are not a hole in the floor.
  3. What's your suggestion to "handle it with humility" that doesn't involve people sitting on a toilet seat that someone else has stood on with their dirty shoes?.

Are you for real? The OP said they have a new member of staff from India. Clearly it is this person standing on the seat. If it was the other way round and you went to work somewhere in Asia would you rather be taken to one side my a colleague and politely told about the customs there. Or would you like a passive aggressive sign to appear in the toilets clearly aimed at you. It's not hard to understand is it? Try doing a bit of travelling and experience some different cultures before you go raging off about something you clearly know nothing about!

Squigglesandgiggles · 19/03/2025 23:07

I remember the company I work for inviting people from the Philippines office over for experience. They used to go to the loo, wipe using toilet roll and put it in the bin or floor- it was EVERYWHERE.
it’s difficult to remember different countries do things differently when it things like this. But I think signs may be your only way!!
although they didn’t help our situation, even the cleaner refused to deal with it so the owner had to mask and glove up and make hourly visits to the loos.

MissRoseDurward · 19/03/2025 23:10

Not that new. A building I used to work in was also used by members of a particular Asian community. The ladies loos had signs as shown above, indicating the right and wrong way to use the toilets. This would have been in the early 2000s.

Ffs why is this a thing at all? It's not a thing. People from India know how to use a freaking western toilet. We are not morons.

Itsjustgonenoonhalfpastmonsoon · 19/03/2025 23:19

Standing on the loo seat seems an odd thing to do. Not only could you fall off, I can’t think it would be easy to piddle that way. 😆

Lassango · 19/03/2025 23:32

Signs on the backs of the cubicle doors.

Neverendingrain · 19/03/2025 23:34

Am I being stupid (probably) why are people standing on loo seats?? Men in disabled toilets doing this and women in ladies loos?? Wtf

ByGreenBiscuit · 19/03/2025 23:35

This is so gross and selfish. I’m sorry but no one goes to England and doesn’t realise people sit on toilets. The least she could do is clean the bloody footprints.

I don’t know?

What I do know is that it’s very common and it’s not done because people don’t know how to use the western toilet, it’s because they choose to squat.

Also, to clarify, I haven’t called anyone names.

ByGreenBiscuit · 19/03/2025 23:36

I would just talk to her about it tbh. Kindly, but firmly. If she wants to take a shit in a hole somewhere, she’ll have to dig one!

I am 50 years old, have several degrees, have held down many jobs and have lived in three countries and before tonight I never knew this was a thing.

We're all learning.

Same!

Gatwick and Stanstead airports have signs in every toilet telling people not to squat on the seats.

tattychicken · 19/03/2025 23:42

No they don't. Total fabrication. Reported.

KnickerlessParsons · 19/03/2025 23:43

We have signs in our toilets telling people not to stand on the seat.
we also have a lot of Indian employees.

I’m amazed at the number of people who sit on public loos! Am I the only one who hovers on loo seats that are not my own?

You're not the only one, but you are quite loopy and irrational to do so. Unless you have open weeping sores on the backs of your thighs you are not doing anything unhygienic if you sit on a loo seat. The skin is a highly evolved protective barrier if it's healthy and unbroken. Unless you are using the loo on the way to some kind of cat yoga session where you are learning to lick the backs of your legs, you don't need to hover.

Hoverers do often leave wee splashes on the seat for the next person to clear up though.

Hover over, maybe..but stand on the seats?!

You're not the only one, there are plenty of people around who have no understanding of germ theory, microbiology or the immune system and so are terrified of loo seats.

NPET · 19/03/2025 23:53

How WOULDN'T it affect you if you needed to use the toilet?
I suppose you hover?

You must have thighs of steel. Especially if it's a tricky Wordle!

I have relaxed in my middle years, though there is always that moment of ick when a seat proves to be unusually warm or (argh!) wet!

menopausalfart · 19/03/2025 23:57

I never sit on a public toilet seat, always hover. This wouldn't bother me in the slightest as I can't stand the thought of someone's arse being on there either.

crumblingschools · 20/03/2025 00:04

What do squatters in work place toilets do at home? Do they have different type of toilets installed?

But it depends on your definition of "public". I would hover on genuinely public toilets at concerts, cinemas, on trains etc. but I don't at college or work.
