Help! She's standing on the toilet seat!!

Help! I've no idea how to deal with this without offending. Since a new female employee has started working with us there are shoe prints on toilet seat. It's a corporate office but only a few females use this toilet so obvious who the culprit is. The lady is from India and new to country. She's very professional and I think this is a cultural difference but I'm horrified she thinks this is ok? What would you do??

We had a colleague who did this until one day she ran screaming from the toilet cubicle. The toilet had broken off and was pouring water all over the place. Our toilets simply aren't designed for this but I'm sure it's a more logical position.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 19/03/2025 21:38

I wouldn't sit on a toilet seat at work anyway. I usually cover it in toilet paper otherwise would hover!! It could be unsafe though and signs might help limit liability and make it less likely she'll hurt herself!

Kurokurosuke · 19/03/2025 21:40

I live in Japan where both squat toilets and Western toilets are available. signs telling you not to stand on the seats of western toilets are fairly common.

Etsy do a version of this which might be a “fun” addition to your work toilet

https://www.etsy.com/listing/962128157/please-dont-get-creative-with-toilet

or another thing in many toilets are disposable seat covers which you could just put in the bathroom and use for your hygiene which would be a less confrontational way.

she will eventually find out from someone, somewhere so I don’t think it will be a long lasting issue

I don’t think it’s offensive to put the signs up. Plenty of places in the uk have the signs in the toilets

TheMimsy · 19/03/2025 21:44

Perhaps speak to HR before printing off or buying signs so it can be handled in a culturally appropriate and respectful way.

Yeah only there were no signs until the Indian lady turned up so….

strawlight · 19/03/2025 21:46

Squatting I get, it’s a more hygienic way of using the toilet and, as others have mentioned, toilets are often ground level in parts of the world where it’s common. But on a western loo? How on earth do people keep their balance? What do they hold on to? I’m pretty sure I’d end up in A&E if I tried to balance on a toilet seat, especially if the bloody thing moved.

Cherrysoup · 19/03/2025 21:46

Cultural, my dh had this with a colleague back in the day. Sadly, the colleague’s aim was crap (ha!) and the floor suffered as a result. I think the boss ultimately put up a sign re not squatting on the seat.

Why would you do or say anything? How does this affect you?

Eww, because the bottom of the shoes will be dirty & potentially have rat piss/dog or poo crap on them?!

Spondoolies · 19/03/2025 21:48

Is there such thing as a semi circular step stool that people who want to use the loo like this could put their feet on I wonder? I find it helpful to put my feet on my DCs step stool when I go so I can see why some people use that position although actually standing on the loo is a bit odd.

edited to add I have just googled it and there is in fact a squatty potty product that is used for this purpose, cheap as well!

Yeah so the signs weren’t needed before but now they are as the toilet isn’t being used properly?

Hankunamatata · 19/03/2025 21:54

I accidentally caught a Chinese female student at uni doing this when she didn't lock the door. I was impressed how agile she was tbh

niadainud · 19/03/2025 21:55

Crazyworksituatio · 19/03/2025 21:09

Thanks everyone for all your advice. Yes I understand squatting is much healthier, but unfortunately western toilets don't facilitate this. Does anyone think putting up posters would appear passive aggressive?? There's only 4 ladies in the office so I think this lady will feel embarrassed if she has to see this sign everyday.

Well if she'd wiped her footprints off the seat no-one would have known... (Just as anyone using the toilet should leave it clean for the next person to use.)

PluckedOutOfThinAir · 19/03/2025 21:56

How many times has this happened? I'm from India and I cannot for the life of me imagine anyone not knowing how to use a western style toilet. Yes Asian style ones, aka hole in the ground, are still popular because they are considered to be more hygienic and good for your health but it's highly unlikely that this lady has never come across a Western style toilet or wouldn't be able to work out how to use one. Especially not someone educated enough to work in a professional position.

I doubt it has happened more than once. can you imagine squatting on a toilet seat? It must feel so perilous that surely no one would try again

It's more likely she took her shoes off to clean them or something like that.

I am amazed you were constipated in India. I wasn't anywhere remotely near constipated for about two months after visiting India.

Creamsnackered · 19/03/2025 21:11

In cultures where this is standard, what are toilets like? Because I'd be genuinely worried standing on a standard UK toilet seat that I'd slip, and I'm a fairly agile person. Is it not quite tricky to balance?

Some are at ground level with the bowl sinking into the ground. Others are about half the height of western toilets (like a high step).
In both styles the rim is very wide (also stronger) and has a shoe type pattern - it's obvious you put your feet there.

Spondoolies · 19/03/2025 21:58

@Crazyworksituatio
could you get something like this for in there. See attached image…

After the break-up of Yugoslavia, DH and I went on a trip to Serbia.

We stayed at a lovely caravan sit in Ptuj in Slovenia. They had two sets of toilet blocks. Those just marked "WC" were western style toilets. Those marked "Turkish Toilets" were spotlessly clean squat toilets.

I was relieved [no pun intended] to see the "ordinary" toilets. Sometimes during my travels, the only facilities available have been squat toilets...and my knees aren't what they should be.

When I was a student in the former Soviet Union, the toilets were all western style, but many of the students stood on them. However, they used lift the seats.

They did get very messy, however.

Some of the toilets in the Soviet Union were 'regular toilets' but bricked up around them.

Tbh in a lot of Asian cultures, they're just a lot better at squatting than us. Half my family is Asian and it's a running joke. Even with regular yoga I can't squat with my feet flat to the ground and bum near the mat without toppling over. I've seen a 70 year old aunty do this for hours with no discomfort. My Japanese friends rib me for it too. Honestly a lot of squat negging in my life.

fashionqueen0123 · 19/03/2025 22:10

How can anyone stand on a toilet seat? Surely you’d slip and fall in or off? That’s ridiculous 🤣 plus gross getting muddy feet on the seats and the obvious fact you’re going to crack it one day!
Squat toilets aren’t off the ground like ours are, so why would someone do that? I don’t even get how it’s physically possible.

Upsetbetty · 19/03/2025 22:10

A butt cheek is not the same as the bottom of the shoe & this may not apply to you but most people's a-holes will fit in the seat hole...
