Swinging teachers

Interested to read some opinions on this. Someone we know has found out that a teacher at their child's school is a swinger. This person is aghast about this and wants to report the teacher (not sure what for) and is refusing to let them teach their child.
My attitude is that as long as it doesn't affect their work (whichbit clearly isnt) then what the teacher chooses to do in their private time is their business and their business only. ATBU?

Was it the pampas grass in the front lawn which gave them away OP 😂

Is that still a sign??? It goes back to the '60s I think!

Did they have an upside down pineapple in their shopping trolley?!

I used to have a pineapple picture in my house and I used to Airbnb it a bit when I was away. Had to take it down when I realised!

Pardon my ignorance/naïveté, but what has an upside down pineapple got to do with this? I use have missed the connection.

I wouldn't want my kids to be taught by someone who hasn't got the boundaries or discretion to keep their sex life private, no.

The whole point about swinging is that they like involving onlookers in their sex lives. Big red flag.

Does one assume then that the children of swingers should be taken away from this pernicious influence? It's more likely that it's happening in the child's home rather than the classroom, so who is more at fault?

For information - these are the teacher standards of conduct required for those of us who have worked to achieve Qualified Teacher Status. If aghast parent thinks the teacher has failed one of these, they can report to headteacher. Otherwise mind their own business.

People tend to post explicit pictures often viewable to anyone. Lots of people also post face pictures. If someone had both types on their profile whilst being a registered teacher, doctor, social worker or similar I'd expect their regulator to investigate if it was reported to them.

So a parent would be let off as obviously they're too lazy to influence their childrn, leave it to others.

If she's swinging in class in front of the kids- report.
If she's doing outside of school hours behind closed doors- she needs to mind her own business.

Exactly. Soon these parents will be demanding celibacy from teachers. Someone remind them these are teachers not catholic priests or popes (for indeed a CoE reverend/priest can swing from the vestry timbers if s/he wants. As long as it's not during service with the congregation rather than to swing buddies)

❤I believe this teacher beholds the British value of individual liberty. No case to answer

NautilusLionfish · 08/03/2025 23:20

Op, tell your friend to change swinging club. Am sure there a few around his or her village/town. S/he does have to belong to same swing cluster as said teacher

HellDorado · 08/03/2025 23:20

If they posted their face on a swinging site openly for example then they should be reported to the regulator.

You’d have to admit to having looked at the site…

MidnightMeltdown · 08/03/2025 23:22

Hmmm... to some extent, it's not really anyone else's business what they do with their personal life, but something like this needs to be discreet.

If people have 'found out' then I assume that the teacher is advertising it somehow online, which I would consider inappropriate. There's a risk that kids could come across it, especially if secondary age.

Unless this person bumped into the teacher while visiting the swingers club themselves??! 😱😂

BansheeOfTheSouth · 08/03/2025 23:31

Make sure this parent never lets their children watch Jim Carey's Grinch. It will ruin their Christmas.

@Shetlands Sounds like a school I worked in 😂

@FKAT Really? You know this for a fact do you? Discretion is key.

Blogswife · 08/03/2025 23:39

How on earth has some one’s choice of sexual partners got anything to do with their ability to teach their child ?!

XWKD · 08/03/2025 23:41

It's absolutely nobody's business.

I'm surprised they find the time and energy.

Yes, that was my first thought too!

Kaybee50 · 08/03/2025 23:55

A friend recently told me is a swinger. I couldn’t care less other than being mildly interested in how it all works!
I wouldn’t care if I found out a teacher was a swinger either. It’s up to then what they do in their own time.

gillefc82 · 08/03/2025 23:58

Whilst I may have finished my GCSEs in 1998 I can still say, even this many years later, the thought of any of the teachers who taught me in Secondary school having sex is just utterly nauseating.

But equally now, speaking as a grown arse adult, what adults get up to in their own homes and on their own private time, provided it doesn’t interfere with the quality of their teaching, I consider to be NONE of my business!

And I say this as a High School Governor who would be duty bound to report an issue if they felt a member of staff had behaved inappropriately or overstepped boundaries in any way.

Is “swinging” still a thing? Conjures up 1970s images of picking car keys from a dish and pampas grass in suburban front gardens for me.

Definitely still a thing

MoreGuineaHyggae · 09/03/2025 00:17

I don't approve of swinging, but as long as she is not bringing any of it into school and is keeping a very strong dividing line between her personal and professional life, I would not report.

Report to whom anyway ?

It was a big thing in the 60s and 70s or so I've heard. May have been an urban legend. When my sister and I were kids, our parents had a holiday bungalow in North Cornwall not far from Bude, in a road of similar places, and the garden was full of pampas grass growing very tall. The couple my parents bought it from were a sweet elderly couple active in their local church, not exactly the types you'd expect to be attending key parties.

And this, my dudes, is why being a teacher is such a joy.

How does having sex with more than one person qualify as a safeguarding issue? Why does it matter whether the world and his/her/their wife knows what someone does with their genitals as long as it is not in front of the children?

Your child is not less safe because Mrs Robertson had a threesome with the captain of the rugby club and a passing dockworker.

Tbf mumsnet loves the term ~safeguarding issue~ and it gets thrown around a lot, including for things that really aren’t safeguarding issues.

whatsthatBout · 09/03/2025 00:45

I knew about pampas grass but not pineapples. Apparently wicker hearts are as well 😅

ItGhoul · 09/03/2025 00:50

Anyone who thinks that there is anything wrong with a teacher swinging is an idiot who needs to take their beak out of other people’s sex lives. A teacher could fuck their way through the local fire brigade and half the Premier League and it would still have zero impact on their work as a teacher.

EBearhug · 09/03/2025 01:05

I have been to a swingers party with a teacher, though not near where either of us lived. Of course, if most people are operating on the principle they won't go to a party near where they live, it means you might still meet someone from there... I can confirm it's a very weird place to meet your partner's cousin unexpectedly for the first time.

It shouldn't matter what teachers do in their own time in private. It does matter if it causes issues at school - when I was about 8, the head had an affair with a parent, which got very messy when the husband found out. The scandal really affected the school/town. But if this is just a rumour with no substance, it doesn't matter.

It depends. If it's a small town, then probably it would get out if they've worked their way through the local fire brigade.
