Swinging teachers

Interested to read some opinions on this. Someone we know has found out that a teacher at their child's school is a swinger. This person is aghast about this and wants to report the teacher (not sure what for) and is refusing to let them teach their child.
My attitude is that as long as it doesn't affect their work (whichbit clearly isnt) then what the teacher chooses to do in their private time is their business and their business only. ATBU?

Why would a regulator care about someone posting their face on a swinging website? Unless they also included their place of work there, it really is nobody's business and nothing that should be regulated.

People tend to post explicit pictures often viewable to anyone. Lots of people also post face pictures. If someone had both types on their profile whilst being a registered teacher, doctor, social worker or similar I'd expect their regulator to investigate if it was reported to them.

Is “swinging” still a thing? Conjures up 1970s images of picking car keys from a dish and pampas grass in suburban front gardens for me.

Yes, but we use the internet in 2025

My kid's TA went to a party (that I was also present at) in blackface. I was stunned. My child is mixed race. I didn't say anything to the school's head. But I did (privately) question her judgement, and was very wary of her interactions with my child after that. Because her attitude towards ethnic minorities through her actions at that party, and consequently towards pupils from minority backgrounds, was relevant to her job.

The sex life of a teacher with other consenting adults bears no relevance to their job.

Honestly, it’s over 20 years ago during Section 28. So probably not. It was obviously considered an issue at the time.

Section 28 repealed in 2003
Grindr started in 2009

Gaydar started in 1999.

There's a very beautifully done-up house near us that got the reputation of being a swingers' venue/possible brothel a few years back. Lots of glamorous people coming-and-going (I should probably rephrase the first half of that, shouldn't I?) at all hours. After a few weeks, the glamorous ones (male and female) started going to the local pub where they made friends and revealed that it was a venue for shooting porn movies. This was much less interesting and they were made welcome

I think the business went broke during Covid.

From the title I thought you meant people teaching others how to be swingers

Me too!

How did they find out?

If it was at all advertised that they were online or common knowledge among other teachers/parents I would think it was inappropriate and a safeguarding issue.

And this, my dudes, is why being a teacher is such a joy.

How does having sex with more than one person qualify as a safeguarding issue? Why does it matter whether the world and his/her/their wife knows what someone does with their genitals as long as it is not in front of the children?

Your child is not less safe because Mrs Robertson had a threesome with the captain of the rugby club and a passing dockworker.

I’ve heard a similar story about a friends school but that there are a couple of teachers and some of the parents have joined in. Of course could all be nonsense…

Can’t say it bothers me.

Parents joining in is taking it a bit far!

Vitriolinsanity · 08/03/2025 21:43

Are they a secondary school teacher? I wouldn't put it past some kids to have created a profile.

adviceneeded1990 · 08/03/2025 21:55

Unless they have a website advertising themselves as a swinger and outing where they work, no one they report it to will be remotely interested.

Definitely this.

AngelinaFibres · 08/03/2025 21:55

Teachers are adult human people. The majority of adult human people have sex, in its many forms, because its what adults do. Presumably the woman who is horrified, had sex at least once, since she is a parent . What someone else does in their leisure time is none of her business, no matter how 'out there' it might be

True

adviceneeded1990 · 08/03/2025 21:59

Just to add, I once worked in a school where the married depute was shagging one of the also married teaching staff, to the full knowledge of everyone from the head to the cleaners, some parents and eventually even some children! No one in any regulatory body of any form cared, and he was reported both to our local authority and to the GTCS by several people due to the power imbalance issue, allowing children to discover the situation (caught kissing in an unlocked classroom) and disciplining staff who raised a moral concern. Private lives are private, even when immoral, so consenting adults swinging will be a non issue.

JustSawJohnny · 08/03/2025 21:59

No matter what our opinions are here, the teacher is at risk of losing their job if anyone reports them to the school they work at. Obviously, it would need some element of proof, but some people are vindictive enough to eg share texts of private conversations in which certain things are discussed.

Teachers know that any actions in their private life that bring the profession or school they work at into disrepute could lead to the sack or being struck off. Teachers have been sacked in the past due to kids finding pics of them on social media clearly drunk or eg accidentally flashing a boob or bum in a video.

You go into training knowing that your private life is scrutinised so they know what they're doing.

Maybe, like a huge number of teachers, this person hates their job and is gleefully nobbing their way to the sack for shits and giggles?

What does everyone think if a teacher is a stripper in her spare time? Or has an Only Fans account? I think teachers should be required not to bring the vocation into disrepute

It's not a vocation. It's a job.

Arcone · 08/03/2025 22:14

says you @LeticiaMorales , I don’t agree. Teaching is typically considered a combatting as well as a profession. It’s very hard to be a teacher if you don’t have a vocation

Exactly! It is just a job and a shit one at that. All the ‘calling’ and ‘vocation’ bollocks is used as an excuse to treat teachers like shit!

Absolutely. Call it a vocation and it's low pay, long hours and constant slagging off. Oh, and folks being intrusive about your sex life.

Yes, says I.
My opinion. I don't know what a combatting is, but I know that you don't need a vocation to be a teacher. Just have resilience, energy, humour and comfy shoes.

anothernameanotherplanet · 08/03/2025 22:39

Two ifs.

If I were still a teacher (retired)
If I were a swinger
I'd swing far away from home to avoid any upset/nosy parkers/karens/whistles being blown etc.

As others have said - if you're doing your job ok, not causing upset, not bringing school into disrepute then it's nobody else's business.

Sometimes events, lifestyles etc catch up with one - or threaten to.

Not unconnected

1 Teacher friend and his teacher wife invited to village party by well off, want to be influential couple. The party progresses. Car keys in a bowl. they leave. Few years later he ends up teaching daughter of couple.

2 Friend came into teaching as a mature entrant. He'd done assorts before but had been manager of a local bookies. Parents' evening. Sees a man he recognises, with his wife and child. Man appears desperate not to be recognised by my friend. Turns out he was a serious habitual gambler in my friend's bookies - but this was unknown to his wife.

Tooshytoshine · 08/03/2025 22:43

Flipping heck... I am in bed by half nine every night and can barely string a sentence together at the end of a day teaching. How others are having sex romps is beyond me.

Parents made complaints about me to my school for being gay and a teacher. We live next door to a set of three siblings who attended my school so did not hide our legal marriage and shared children from our neighbours.

I moved to a school out of area as it was like being a shit celebrity with the perks of fans or pay, living near the catchment.

Teachers have a right to a personal life - we are just people doing jobs. Leave us alone outside of school...
