To think I've been ripped off / scammed? Vinted

I was browsing vinted for a (BNWT) handbag to treat myself to for my upcoming birthday.

I came across this one (advertised with these pictures) for £35 and thought it looked lovely. The seller has dozens of positive reviews.

Well, the seller posted it out to me today and after she did she promptly sent me a message afterwards with a bunch of additional photos that weren't visible on the original advert.

It's absolutely shit quality and so flimsy. I would not have bought it with those images on there. The advertised pictures are misleading. She also told me she has sprayed it with antibacterial spray.

I asked why that was necessary and she assured me it doesn't damage the bag as she has sold this same bag 7 times and done the same with all. Apparently it's a spray for bags (?)

Long story short, I've discovered that she's buying them in bulk on Temu for under a tenner and upselling them for over three times the price.

Bags from Temu/Shein arrive smelling of strong chemicals (or fish!) so that's why she's claiming the BS about antibacterial spray.

I don't want a smelly temu bag.

Her profile states no refunds or returns.

Do I have a leg to stand on here and am I being unreasonable to raise a grievance with vinted?

WWYD?

Hmm she's selling copies of the manu atelier bag. I would attach a pic of the genuine one and claim through vinted she's sold you a fake

You're right!

I just googled manu atelier and the image she posted on vinted came up on Google images and when clicked on takes you to their official website where I've seen the original.

Hopefully this will help my case.

Never again 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sorry but it’s not really a scam is it? She hasn’t claimed its designer. You’ve paid way too much for a cheap bag. I don’t know why you would pay that much for a bag on Vinted tbh. Big brands go for less than that.

Ritzybitzy · 03/03/2025 21:09

where are the images from the original listing? Unless she’s told a lie and what arrives looks notably different from the original listing I think you’ve got a problem.

Not a scam in the eyes of the law perhaps, but it certainly feels like one.

Not a scam but definitely shady behaviour!

Ritzybitzy · 03/03/2025 21:13

It’s literal good business. Sell and make a profit.

Fannyannie · 03/03/2025 21:14

When it arrives , don’t press everything is okay and accept , press to raise an issue and request refund and return . She has to do this.

No she doesn’t.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/03/2025 21:20

If it wasn't supposed to be a quality brand then it's the bag in the picture. She didn't specify what it was made of or who by, and you didn't ask.
In that respect it's not really as misleading as being an open scam. It's a rip off definitely, so do try and get a refund. But lots of people must buy crappy Chinese stuff and then resell on vinted, unused? It's not nice and I don't agree with it though.

Birch101 · 03/03/2025 21:21

Out of interest I reversed searched her image and it's apparently of a lady who died ...

Vinted will usually side with the seller.

Prettypennies · 03/03/2025 21:22

She’s hidden her stuff now lol

Link to the original image, which your seller/Temu has taken from the Manu Atelier official instagram page. This could be your evidence for the seller knowingly selling a counterfeit bag.

I'm kind of amazed anyone would spend £35 on a second hand, unbranded bag bought directly from a stranger.

If she is advertising it with photos from google then she's in the wrong and should refund though.

In future I would either - buy from a shop, at least buy a brand you recognise, or only spend pennies.

TemuMuggedOff · 03/03/2025 21:11

Not a scam in the eyes of the law perhaps, but it certainly feels like one.

Why? It was listed as “not applicable” for brand because it’s an unbranded cheap bag. The original photos show an unbranded cheap bag. Which you decided was worth the £35.
She has not had 219 offers. She has had 219 interactions of likes. You misunderstood that, thought 219 people were trying to buy it, probably thought you were getting something special and bought it.
You didn’t instead that NA meant not applicable and that 219 people weren’t actually offering her money for it. She hasn’t lied about anything in the listing (the messages after won’t count for anything). This is buyer beware. She didn’t scam you.

When it arrives, all you can do is request a return but you’ll have to pay for the return postage yourself and then you’ll get a refund through Vinted. Next time, to save that hassle, pay more attention to what you are buying.

It won't help your case OP. You've told us she listed the brand as "NA" (Not Applicable?). It would only help your case if she'd listed the brand as "Manu Atelier" because that would be mis-describing the product, but she hasn't done that.

Dizzywizz · 03/03/2025 21:26

@AngelicKaty @TemuMuggedOff but surely as using a picture - of an actual designer bag - then it’s misleading as it isn’t the actual bag they’re selling??

Sidebeforeself · 03/03/2025 21:26

This is why I don’t understand the love for Vinted. With a carefully written advert anyone can sell any old tat

The original photo was of a branded bag taken from their website so that is where the deception comes in.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/03/2025 21:28

Is she a Pro seller (as in Vinted Pro)...

If not, Vinted is for selling on personal items you no longer use, it is not for running a business through, so if she is selling multiple of the same brand new item, she clearly is selling as a business.

ChorizoDog · 03/03/2025 21:29

Years ago I used to buy bits from Primark (when there wasn't one everywhere!) I would buy a belt for £1 and sell for £8for example. I didn't consider I was scamming anyone. I didn't say it was from Primark and I didn't say it wasn't.

She hasn't claimed it's designer
You haven't asked regarding the brand, etc
The pictures she sent are similar to the stock photo she used.
I don't really see how you have a case.

I would refuse delivery.

Lolopolo · 03/03/2025 21:29

She says in her bio that she sends extra images before shipping. And mentions the spray.

I don’t think you’ve been scammed, she’s a chancer and you’ve been ‘had’ as you’re not savvy (in recognising these type of listings) but given the listing image had a photo of a different bag taken from another brands website you should get a refund as ‘not as described’.

It still looks like a cheap bag; that’s the power of designer labels. If Primark sold it, it wouldn’t be sold for hundreds. Stick a Name on it and a cheap flimsy bag shoots up in price.

But that’s nothing to do with the thread. If she used fake photos then Vinted should step in.

TemuMuggedOff · 03/03/2025 21:31

I would hope that it's an open and shut case when I provide vinted with evidence of her using pictures from manu atelier.

I didn't actually realise it was a dupe for a designer bag when I bought it, but it should help my case as counterfeit items are prohibited on there AFAIK.

As for whether I'm new to buying on vinted - I wish I could say yes but I have been a buyer and seller on there for a couple of years, and been very fortunate not to have had any issues before.

That, coupled with the seller having lots of positive feedback, meant I didn't exercise better judgement. Lesson learned.

I understand some might think I should just take it on the chin but I paid £40 including postage and I'm just not prepared to part with that much for a chemical laden bag from Temu.

I've just had a message from her, apparently she's being inundated with messages from people accusing her of selling dodgy bags. Good. I hope nobody else wastes their money.

@TemuMuggedOff contact vinted now with your concerns. I had this happen with a pair of trainers and they sorted it out before they arrived. Hope you get it sorted 🙏🏻
