I think there is an argument for more rehabilitation / restorative justice but that’s doesn’t work for all offenders or all types of offences.

Rehabilitation could take place in prison. The public need protecting first and foremost.

Rehabilitation needs to be front and centre in the justice system but some people simply aren’t safe to be in public. Prison is the punishment/public protection but once in prison the focus should be on rehabilitation

There's certainly an argument to be made regarding women in prison. We need to invest more in rehabilitation and keeping men out of prison.

I'm the other way. I would throw most murderers, all rapists and all nonces on an island to fend for themselves.

This would work fine, IF we brought back the death penalty for anyone dangerous. I.e. rapists, killers and nonces as none of those can be rehabilitated.

for me, the reasons why so many people end up in prison- which are known and largely preventable- need attention first.

as far as I know, there is no country that has achieved this, so very much a pipe dream for discussion rather than a realistic solution to implement

In this country, the UK, We send more people to prison per head of the population than France does.
This rate of imprisonment sould b looked at, there is cerainly a case to be made for fewer prison sentences for non-violent offenders.
However we will always need to lock up violent people, murderers and rapists and the criminally insane for the public protection.
