To say that prisons should be abolished altogether?

Rehabilitation and community justice models work better than locking people away. AIBU to think prisons are outdated and ineffective?

OP posts:

So what would you propose for people like the paedophile ring in Glasgow who last month were jailed for horrific offences against babies and children. The man who killed the children in Southport.

You think they shouldn't be in prison??

This has to be a wind up

What's the betting that after posting such a controversial (or stupid) thread the OP never comes back

Miaowzabella · 09/02/2025 12:52

What proportion of the current prison population are you proposing to accommodate in your home?

Iknjtjumpers · 09/02/2025 12:52

Well…….no because where’s the deterrent not to commit heinous crimes?

Hercisback1 · 09/02/2025 12:52

Have you seen what's happened in schools with this being the quasi policy?

spottedinthewilds · 09/02/2025 12:53

No, punishment for dangerous crime needs to be far more harsh. I would rather they build more prisons and have longer sentences with less home comforts inside.

Criminals in this country are not afraid of being locked up.

It's only going to get worse unless something changes.

We need mid point between somewhere like here and Dubai. Dubai is obviously the most extreme, but there is far less crime on the streets.

AquaPeer · 09/02/2025 12:38

Interesting idea OP and one very worthy of discussion!

for me, the reasons why so many people end up in prison- which are known and largely preventable- need attention first.

as far as I know, there is no country that has achieved this, so very much a pipe dream for discussion rather than a realistic solution to implement

El Salvador seems to be managing

By using the most brutal and inhumane prison system

But it seems to be a deterrent Shock

WhatWasPromised · 09/02/2025 12:56

Have you ever been the victim of a crime OP?

I can’t imagine how pleased I’d be if the person who murdered my relative was ‘rehabilitated’ rather than serving time

aei22 · 09/02/2025 12:56

What’s the deterrent to committing crimes then? I’ll steal my next Tesco shop shall I?

AquaPeer · 09/02/2025 12:57

“No country has ever eradicated prisons and rehabilitated criminals in the community as you suggest OP”

”el Salvador has… by having prisons”

erm…
what? 😂

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 12:59

Would you feel confident enough in this approach to house someone?

Sneezeless · 09/02/2025 12:59

Some people should not be in prison I think most people recognise that, however there are some extremely dangerous people who in prison and should never be let out. Batshit idea.

UndermyShoeJoe · 09/02/2025 13:00

lol no prisons.

If anything our prisons are too soft. Oh no humans rights for people that take lives and rape people.

Lock them up and throw away the key when it comes to those things. Certainly not Xbox’s and mobile phones.

Petty crime? Ok maybe not as harsh maybe more Scandinavian they can cook their own meals and stuff in more like hostel type prisons.

lindyloo57 · 09/02/2025 13:01

We need to bring back the death penalty for those who murder with intent, and the evidence with dna is there, that will make some space.

AquaPeer · 09/02/2025 13:01

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 12:59

Why would that be required though?
I don’t think that question is quite the gotcha people think. It’s an irrelevance

Rehabilitation on the community isn’t some adopt a criminal scheme. It’s a thoughtful, research backed scheme of support and rehabilitation devised and delivered by skilled experts. Not you having Peter sutcliffe in your spare room

If it was a deterrent prisons would be shutting due to a lack of people going to prison, where as they have the highest prisoner rate in the world.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/02/2025 13:02

Absurd idea. Prisons are not only about rehabilitation. They are also about protecting the public from dangerous, predatory and violent criminals. Quite frankly, murderers and paedophiles should be in prison for life, in which case I don't care if they repent or not.

villanova · 09/02/2025 13:02

Further to @BeMoreAmandaland mentioning the Scandinavian model, there's an interesting BBC podcast exploring how some US prisons are experimenting with this model to reduce recidivism (as their current punitive model is shockingly ineffective at reducing reoffending or acting as a deterrent): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0k03vr1
As others have remarked, our prisons need to have the money to tackle the root causes of criminal behaviour (neglect, learning disabilities, head injuries, mental health problems...) for those who can he rehabilitated, and having a sense of hope for the future allows prisoners to work on finding a better path when they leave prison.

BBC World Service - People Fixing the World, The jails where they do things differently

The prison in Philadelphia that's adopted a Scandinavian model of custody

This feels like one of those threads which is actually a teenager’s attempt to get us to write their homework essay.

Onlyvisiting · 09/02/2025 13:04

I think for a huge majority of crimes we would be better served using modern technology of tags/extreme curfews etc. Someone's life can be severely restricted and not fun whilst also being able to work/be in education/rehabilitation not be the massive cost to the tax payer that prisons are. But I think there would still need to be prisons for those who repeatedly don't comply or are a danger to others. The difference is I think if people are bad enough to be locked up then they mostly shouldn't be coming out again.
I think locking someone up for like 4 years is pointless. It takes them out of society for long enough they are probably going to really struggle to re integrate and live a useful life afterwards, but if they are genuinely a danger to others then 4 years is useless.
The % of prisoners who grew up in the care system is concerning and shows a system breakdown that needs fixing imo.

Dappy777 · 09/02/2025 13:06

StMarie4me · 09/02/2025 12:37

Absolutely not. Some people do not belong in society. Rapists. Murderers. Child abusers. Those guilty of DA/ coercive control. GBH.

I agree. I’d add that all over this country ordinary, good people who try and do the right thing are having their lives ruined by feral, violent, anti-social neighbours. Such people make everyone’s life a misery. They are always involved in benefit fraud and low level, petty crime - usually drugs. And when they go to prison, it gives the neighbourhood a short and blessed break from their noise and intimidation. Unfortunately, their kids usually take over from where they’ve left off. I was woken up twice last night by the 18-year-old son of such a family. He drives round the estate in a boy racer car with an exhaust that screeches and explodes.

Frankly, after having so much of my life ruined by these sorts of families, I’d happily build an open air prison for the persistent offenders. Or some kind of housing estate for the most violent and anti-social people. If you can’t live in a civilised way you don’t belong in civilised society.

Are you a blue haired climate activist type?

You insult blue-haired climate activists with the comparison.

Panama2 · 09/02/2025 13:07

That would have worked so well for Ian Brady or the Yorkshire Ripper….

WearyAuldWumman · 09/02/2025 13:08

Would you care to explain what you mean by 'community justice', OP?

wherearemypastnames · 09/02/2025 13:08

Should more be done towards rehabilitation, and towards creating an environment where fewer people feel driven to to crime - yes

Should prisons be abolished - no because here's the thing - not everyone is fundamentally nice

Hamletscigar · 09/02/2025 13:08

Lucky you, op, to be unaware how dangerous people can be. Ignorance is bliss
