I do not believe in gender identity.

There are two sexes: male and female. Occasionally, that matters.

There is no such thing as an innate gender identity—no internal essence that makes someone more inclined to wear dresses and sip wine, or football boots and down pints. Those are cultural stereotypes, not proof of some mystical gendered soul.

The idea of gender identity is sexist, misogynistic, and regressive. It reinforces outdated norms instead of challenging them. Women do not need an inner feeling of womanhood to be women. Men do not need a gender identity to be men. Sex is real. Stereotypes are not.

I hope with the flurry of cultural changes, legal challenges, scientific findings and executive orders in the last ~12 months, more people feel able to stand up and be counted, and say - No More.

💯

Good for you.

There isn't any AIBU here though you've just posted a statement of your personal belief.

Why?

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/02/2025 09:11

Come and join the discussion on the Feminism/Women's Rights board.

Chersfrozenface · 04/02/2025 09:11

I don't have a gender identity. I have a physical sex and a personality.

Catza · 04/02/2025 09:12

I think your underlying assumption is wrong. There is no, and (to my knowledge) have never been, an assumption that gender is "innate". Gender is a socially constructed phenomenon which differentiates it from sex. So your belief is consistent with gender theory, I am afraid.

lifeturnsonadime · 04/02/2025 09:12

I'm with you OP. It's a harmful regressive belief system.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/02/2025 09:12

Nearly everyone agrees with you. We’ll look back at this insane era as we do other terrifying episodes of social contagion.

Well, I sort of assumed people would think the statement "I do not believe in gender identity. " was reasonable, or unreasonable. I wanted to see what the prevailing opinion was and if I was in a minority. It feels like I am in a minority whenever I look at the news, Netflix, or the Oscars.

I disagree.

It is what it is
Didn't come about for no reason!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Blue is for boys pink is for girls.

SapphOhNo · 04/02/2025 09:21

Ok - you're entitled to feel that way and express it. Feel better?

Catza · 04/02/2025 09:26

GoldenGail · 04/02/2025 09:19

I disagree.

What specifically do you disagree with in my comment?

Oh this sums it up fantastically thank you

I’d add to that that anyone requiring other people to go along with the pretence they are the opposite ‘gender’ is a controlling person and should not be indulged.

Cunningfungus · 04/02/2025 09:27

💯 @SernieBanders
Unfortunately I can’t upload a picture (owing to site problems but you can find it with a quick google) but there is a photograph doing the rounds under the satirical banner “hard work pays off” with a “before and after” comparison of the swimmer William/Lia Thomas which really underscores this madness. There he is, all 6 foot plus of him, standing there with full male genitalia apparent, swimming in female competitions.

It’s just so unfair. We wouldn’t let 25 year olds compete against 12 year olds because they identified as being younger, yet we allow all the biological advantages a male body has wrt most sports to be denied cos (male) feelings.

I’m really hoping it’s a case of metaphorically giving them enough rope to let them hang themselves. Surely a light must soon be shone on this madness 😢

MeWilbur · 04/02/2025 09:29

Agreed! Slightly (un)related but it does my head in when forms (even those used for NHS purposes) ask you to select your gender and then give 'male' or 'female' as options. Sex and gender are not the same thing!

I'm not sure that you are looking in the right places. There is a world of research into gender identity which is pretty much unanimous that it is socially constructed. Germaine Greer wrote about it in the 70s (The Female Eunuch). There is also a wealth of academic papers published since.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 04/02/2025 09:29

Engaging in debate is not the same as doing things to “feel better”. We’ll leave that to the men who ride rough shod over the rights of women and girls so that they can “feel better”.

That’s a new idea. Used to be the other way around.

AlisonDonut · 04/02/2025 09:37

100%, all that work we did to get rid of 'that's for girls and that's for boys' turned into 'if you like that you are a girl and if you like that you are a boy' because of doctors and their weird experiments and lies.

Well in years gone by pink was very much for boys. Obviously this made penises (peni?) drop off so was changed. Or maybe it’s all just marketing.

lastlaughwasme · 04/02/2025 09:43

I once heard that there isn't a gender when it comes to love.
I dont understand that one.
