I do not believe in gender identity.

There are two sexes: male and female. Occasionally, that matters.

There is no such thing as an innate gender identity—no internal essence that makes someone more inclined to wear dresses and sip wine, or football boots and down pints. Those are cultural stereotypes, not proof of some mystical gendered soul.

The idea of gender identity is sexist, misogynistic, and regressive. It reinforces outdated norms instead of challenging them. Women do not need an inner feeling of womanhood to be women. Men do not need a gender identity to be men. Sex is real. Stereotypes are not.

I hope with the flurry of cultural changes, legal challenges, scientific findings and executive orders in the last ~12 months, more people feel able to stand up and be counted, and say - No More.

I'm not sure that you are looking in the right places. There is a world of research into gender identity which is pretty much unanimous that it is socially constructed. Germaine Greer wrote about it in the 70s (The Female Eunuch). There is also a wealth of academic papers published since.

And yet Stonewall, Mermaids et al have been bludgeoning women to accept transwomen (men) in women’s spaces and categories because of their innate gender identity that not only means they “feel like a woman” now, but that they always were women. Even when fathering children or winning medals in men’s sport competitions.

We who are gender critical acknowledge gender as an external force to fight against. The TRA say it is an inherent part of a person and of great importance.

OP, I agree, it’s nonsense. I don’t believe in it, nor immortal souls, nor auras.

5foot5 · 04/02/2025 10:33

OP are you new to Mumsnet? You are not going to get much disagreement on this here, the majority (myself included) probably share your views on this.

Those unruly women, not staying in their approved cages.

Well... I think some individuals do have a sense of 'gender identity' that's very important to them. The problem came when rather than realising that it's fine to be gender nonconforming, they were led to believe 'gender' must align with sex, and therefore should modify their bodies in a futile attempt to do the impossible and 'change sex'.

Yes, exactly. I’m absolutely fine (why wouldn’t I be?) with anyone being as gender-nonconformist as they like. It’s when their belief if that they can, and should, ‘change sex’ erodes the biological and legal category of ‘woman’ that this is a huge problem in rolling back women’s hard-won rights and exposing women to danger.

Pilloecat · 04/02/2025 10:35

Transphobia is inherently misogynistic, anti-feminist and just plain boring. You have been fed extremist hate from media and silly buggers like jk Rowling. Parroting it doesn’t make you a free thinker.

Listen to trans people instead of basing your view of them on what hateful people say. This nonsense is just the gay panic rebranded, and I find it very sad. I don’t respond to bigots so if this comment makes you feel upset, please look inwards, don’t waste both our time trying to argue with me- I won’t see your reply. Try to find empathy for one of the most maligned groups of people in society today.

Completely agree. A man is a man, a woman is a woman. If a man wants to dress as a woman, fair enough that's up to them, but they are still a man. If a woman wants to dress as a man, fine! but they are still a woman.

All this 'i feel a like a woman, therefore I am one' and 'if I like wearing skirts and make up I must be a women's crap is nonsense! I'm a woman, I don't often wear skirts and never wear make up! that doesn't make me a man!!!

The worst thing is that this crap is taught in schools. My son tells me that his secondary school have been taught there are over 50 genders. One of his teachers is a "Mx" but she is quite clearly a woman. It's so confusing for the kids.

Boys are boys, girls are girls. Sure, express yourself however you like, boys can wear dresses, high heels etc.. of they like, good for them! Plenty of women don't wear them. Wearing a dress doesn't make you a female any more than wearing jeans and a t shirt makes you a man.

🙆🤷

Infiltration of schools - to literally lie to our children, is unforgivable

It's literally akin to saying the sun goes round the earth - or we were created 6,000 years ago

It's a belief, and a disprovable one at that

Of course YANBU. But I have never been afraid to voice this view. One glance at my FB page would show you how I feel about this, and I don't care if I offend anyone. I shared the "Lia" Thomas meme a few days ago, that a pp spoke about, and I share anything that speaks to there being men and women as the only genders.

So defending actual women’s rights is misogynistic and anti feminist? What an absolute crock of shit.

But hey carry on pandering to the almighty penis if that’s what you feel but don’t dress others up as bigots just because we won’t be silenced

Can you please explain to me in simple terms what gender identity is, what it means to you and why it's existence means that Mens Rights can trump the rights of Women and Children?

Pretty much every terf I know, including me, is a terf because they listened to trans people!

And to add, i believe in biology, and that it can't be changed, no matter how you might want to gaslight or bully me into not doing.
I can't stop the world to become another race, culture or animal, so I can't agree with stopping it to facilitate someone changing gender.

And I still despise terf wars, lol.
I think most of this problem is a result of toxic masculinity, generally, although gender conformity is another grotesque contributor.

I personally couldn't give a shit if I'm labelled a terf. I care about fairness and safety for women and girls. That's it. If that makes me an evil terf or transphobe, so be it!

I believe the concept of gender is restrictive and harmful. Sex matters, gender is merely personality and I can't for the life of me understand how we have got to a place where you're seen as evil for rejecting the concept of gender or thinking it's much less important than sex. Yet it's brave and courageous to identify with gender. Crazy times we live in. Sex based rights were established to protect women. It matters. People can believe what they want but they can't force others to go along with it.

PersephoneSmith · 04/02/2025 10:48

Are you trans @zerogrey ? Or is there some other reason you can’t see the science facts behind biological sex? Skin in the game?
