Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

The spores that grow on ferns - they make me go cold with horror. I think it is trypophobia, as I also don’t like lotus seed pods, but there is something about those spores in particular 😬. Dd loved to point them out to me!

Rats and mice

Projectme · 24/01/2025 23:19

Going into a car wash.
Just can't do it alone. I have to have DH or one of my adult DC with me.
It's all the bodies and hands flailing around the car and I'm inside with all windows shut and knowing I can't escape because of the queue of cars in front and behind.
But I'm making myself go, as I say with others and hoping the fear wears off eventually!

Falling asleep when really tired and you can feel the moment that sleep is pulling you down. Feels like death.

I honestly never remember falling asleep. It's like one moment I'm lying in bed, and the next, I'm awake and look at the clock to see that a few hours have passed. If I feel myself falling asleep I try to stop it, as it scares me.

Biffsboys · 24/01/2025 23:21

Driving behind a truck with scaffold poles , I always imagine one coming off through my windscreen and being impaled to the seat 😱

Fourleggedfanatic · 24/01/2025 23:22

Snakes (predictable phobia) and wind turbines (not so predictable)

Birds and hole / empty swimming pools 😵

Yes empty swimming pools are terrifying to me too!

Shetlands · 24/01/2025 23:22

I googled the hangars and the hairs on my arm stood on end!

For decades I've been terrified of the underside of ships, whether in a dry dock or in underwater photos/films. I go cold and queasy at the sight of them. There's a photo of the Titanic's propellors that makes me shudder, although I'm fascinated by the ship.

I can't stand puppets, they are deeply creepy and as a child I couldn't sit and watch Punch & Judy on the beach. I don't like big dolls or clowns either.

Oh no! Yes they are famous for the airships here, 6 years ago my then 4 year old was obsessed when they released it, it was quite low down and just plodded along the sky, you wouldn't have liked that!

You'rw right, I would have hated that! I even have nightmares about them. I remember seeing one when I was a child and it just felt so daunting as it passed by.

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 24/01/2025 23:23

Seeing someone in the same room take out a packet of crisps to eat or something else crunchy.
Driving over a trainline or driving behind a car transporter.
And, yes, like PP going into a car wash! My toddler was terrified and I could totally understand, especially when the bar came towards the windscreen. What if it malfunctioned, didn't lift and ploughed straight through the screen at us?!

rewilded · 24/01/2025 23:23

Wrists I think it was seeing crosses in church as a child.
Buttons and coins mainly 1p and 2ps but 5ps are not great either.
3am in the morning if I am awake and no one is in the house, it feels a bit otherwordly.
Dense woodland

Enko · 24/01/2025 23:23

Driving over.bridges. especially queen Elizabeth bridge. I would never attempt any of the American ones
I've had therapy
.I can physically get myself over it but with pounding heart and a dry mouth it's horrid.

And ds chose a uni that means I have to cross it.

boydoggies · 24/01/2025 23:25

Jewellery and coins. Make me want to vomit. Imagine them to be carrying the most gross bugs and germs

Gracelet · 24/01/2025 23:25

People being sick. Absolutely terrifies me to the point of sobbing if someone in the house vomits. Could never be in the same room - struggle to stay in the house!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 24/01/2025 23:25

Telephones.

murasaki · 24/01/2025 23:26

Poached eggs. Now I'm allergic to eggs so don't eat them, but DP does, and that's fine. Mostly. Fried egg, ok, but the element of surprise re the poached egg, potential gloopy snotty badness freaks me out. If he's eating them, I leave the room.

Lavenderblossoms · 24/01/2025 23:26

I have what apparently is megalophobia... of huge wind turbines. Driving near them on the motorway near me makes me shake and feel sick. I cannot look at them. The blades make me feel jittery. I once made myself watch someone filming inside of one on a reel with one in the ocean and I was cringing the entire time.

The tiny ones on farms do not bother me so I've deduced it's the sheer size.

Yes I know how strange it is.

YorkieB · 24/01/2025 23:27

Never tell anyone mine because it sounds weird....flowers.
Had a phobia of them since a small child. Trees, grass, anything green I'm fine with, good job my husband isn't the type to buy me a bunch for a present 😂

Blarn · 24/01/2025 23:27

Worms. Not scared of them but they upset me and make me feel a bit sick. Dd2 had a worm farm and it wasn't so bad when I made myself look at them behind the plastic when they are in the soil. But I could cry when ispot on on the surface when gardening or the pavement.

LunchtimeNaps · 24/01/2025 23:27

Pipes as in plumbing. and water in toilet especially when it raises when flushing 🤢

ItsByThere · 24/01/2025 23:27

I thought of one of my weird one - my cuticles - I can’t paint my nails or get my nails done because I can’t stand anything going near that part of my nail. I also hate the word cuticles. It makes me feel like I’m going to pass out.

Remotemouse · 24/01/2025 23:30

Butterflies - cannot cope with them anywhere near me. Moths too but people don’t question that as much.

Motorways

Me too

Endofyear · 24/01/2025 23:32

Helicopters. Bloody hate seeing them in the sky! They make me anxious just looking at them and the ominous noise they make 😩

MarkingBad · 24/01/2025 23:32

Not scared of it but I don't like travelling eastwards
