Thought I would start a (hopefully) interesting thread on what fears people have that aren't your 'typical' fears most people get! So forget the dark, spiders and heights!

I have typical fears most people do, for example my biggest one would be bees/wasps but that's quite common, but this one is a strange one (or so other people say!)

I live in Bedfordshire and there are two hangers, called the cardington hangers/sheds that are used for various things, including film sets, and they absolutely terrify me. Google if you're interested, but you'll probably think what's the deal? I can't even explain it myself but having spoken to my partner I think it must be the size of them? I also don't like that they are so isolated and where I live, I'll drive round the corner and I won't see them until they are in my face and it honestly makes my heart race. I avoid them as much as I can. The worst time was when it was foggy and I couldn't see them when I normally would and I felt sick because I knew they were there but couldn't see them. Maybe I need help😂
So what's yours?

Blood pressure monitors, they make me feel like I'm going to pop.

I'm absolutely terrified of heights which is obviously common. Odd thing is they make me want to jump just so I can get down which makes me more scared because I have such a strong urge. I used to live in York and was terrified of M&S as it was 4 floors and the first 3 had an open middle with just escalators and I was always desperate to jump from that top floor...

You are me. It's the compulsion to jump that scares me. I end up imagining how far out and how far down, like mental trigonometry.

I used to work somewhere where the offices were round the edge of a 6 floor atrium, with glass bridges across. I'd always walk round and never use the bridges, even though it took twice as long.

Rockfordpeach · 24/01/2025 22:49

Orcas. Just a picture of them send my heart racing. I used to love swimming in the sea but since this phobia developed, I cannot step foot in the ocean

Mossstitch · 24/01/2025 22:49

Another one who is given the creeps by wind turbines and I have to pass a load of them when driving to a friend's😫i feel like they have evil intent and are watching me which i know is ridiculous!! I think it stems from the cover picture of HG Wells War of the Worlds which we were forced to read in primary school, I just remember these weird machines with long legs striding towards people🤷‍♂️don't even know if that memory is real!

Gas storage tanks. No idea why, I've never really been that close to one but just no.

Well, I agree with this but I have no idea why, see also (for me) those humming power grid installation things and very large pylons. I think it must be to do with vestiges of public health information films when I was young. Gas/ electricity = danger.

NotThoseKindOfEggs · 24/01/2025 22:50

Feet, slugs, snails, and trains that have to go over bridges/ bodies of water

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/01/2025 22:50

Door hinges and the idea of people getting their fingers stuck in one.

People parking over my driveway (I am claustrophobic though, and I think it’s an extension of that).

Dog poo (but again that’s probably quite normal?)

Battersea Power Station..... Sad

Ooh yes similar to mine, is it because it's so big?

@SentFromMyiPhnoe - Ladybirds here too. I can spot them a mile away🤢. If they're still it makes me tense but when they fly - pure panic.
It has led to some embarrassing situations and everyone I've told thinks I'm bonkers.

Runingoncaffeine · 24/01/2025 22:51

Mould.

Wendolino · 24/01/2025 22:51

People touching my fingernails. Nothing could make me have a manicure. I feel like my nails would fall off.

Vimaybe · 24/01/2025 22:51

@murasaki I'm glad I'm not alone! I think there's a genuine word for it but I can't remember it. My dad is also the same.

Also 100% agree with this and the association with war of the worlds. plus, they make a weird inhuman noise.

murasaki · 24/01/2025 22:52

I think wind turbines are beautiful, but do freak out at cooling towers, oddly. I know where they are in journeys I make often and bury myself in a book, they always look like they're going to explode.

Fencehedge · 24/01/2025 22:52

Stephen Mulhern. No reason why. His hair is too fluffy and his face is too twinkly. I'm sure he's a lovely man but I don't get him, and that makes him scary somehow.

XenoBitch · 24/01/2025 22:53

Cruise ships. When I have been on beach holiday, and see one in the distance... I feel so uneasy.

This is the definition of vertigo by the way.

mistymorning12 · 24/01/2025 22:53

As a child I didn’t like the test card…
As an adult - heights. Unfortunately DH doesn’t like height either. so we took it in turns to rescue small children from high up stuff and ski!

Like the warning adverts for electricity

Like it became some sort of subconscious core memory or something. You don't see warnings like that anymore. But we don't go near substations or pylons.

ClassicBBQ · 24/01/2025 22:54

Speaking to people, especially on the phone. And driving.

Bridges, especially small narrow ones, have to breath in and walk like on a tight rope.

This is me too! London Bridge in particular, I just cannot walk over it. Have had to get bus / cab over it before. I just freeze.

Was in NYC recently and someone suggested walking across Brooklyn Bridge. I would rather swim

toobusybee123 · 24/01/2025 22:55

The old high cistern toilets with the chain scare the shit out of me, to the point where I have to peer slowly round the door of every new toilet I go into in case. It's ridiculous but I can't bear to look at them, let alone use them (I just wouldn't and couldn't) 🤣

godparentdilemma · 24/01/2025 22:55

Falling.

Oh and pylons and sewage works. Can't go near them.

candlesgalore · 24/01/2025 22:56

I am scared of motorways too.
I think it is the fear of being out of control and not being able to stop. Have managed to overcome it for a short journey recently, but still get anxious.
