https://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2025/01/judge-and-parents-call-for-boys-to-be-protected-from-circumcision

Article describes an upsetting case of two doctors performing these ops without anesthesia, and with sometimes serious side effects. One boy nearly died.

The National Secular Society is running a concurrent campaign to ban all 'religious cutting' - that includes both FGM and male circumcision. I wholeheartedly agree that no baby or child should suffer in this way. More info:

YABU - circumcision for religous reasons is fine
YANBU - circumcision should be banned (unless there is a medical reason)

Male circumcision should be banned (unless for medical reasons). FGM is already banned in the UK, quite rightly. Religious and cultural customs don't trump human or animal rights. For example Pagans are free to practice their religion but they're not allowed to sacrifice animals on an alter.

Multiculturalism is less important than the rights of children and animals. Where religion and cultural practices encroach on these rights, there should be a red line drawn.

It's in the Old Testament/Torah. God tells Abraham to circumcise his male descendants ever after. It's a key mitzvah (commandment) in Judaism for this reason.

Though it isnt in the Quran.

It doesn't matter if it's in the Torah, Old Testament or Quran or if it's just the cultural practices of particular communities.

What matters is that this is the UK and the rights of children and animals should take priority. Otherwise why don't we legalise FGM?

We would have if the right type of people were into it.

As I said, it's in the Hadith as strongly recommended. It is a bit easier at least to adapt as there's no infant requirement.

Edited

The argument used is that FGM is probably much worse,,which is true and that the benefits of banning circumcision don't outweigh the costs.

I think other methods like mandating pain relief and medical oversight would work better.

As I said above, there are different types of FGM, some of which are 'less bad' than typical male circumcision.

Would you recommend rescinding the ban and "mandating pain relief and medical oversight" for less radical forms of FGM too?

Most FGM is type 1 2 or 3 which are all much worse. Type 4 is more comparable but that's the least common.

But you've not answered my question. You seem to think male circumcision should be allowed to continue in Britain, provided there is some medical oversight. Do you believe the same should be true for the milder forms of FGM?
