To be alarmed at Starmers plans

Anybody else worried about his ongoing plans for deeper involvement in Ukraine. In an interview yesterday he said he intends to send our troops out there. Surely this would mean we’d be at war with Russia! Anyone else very concerned.

Problem is that there are not a lot of imports from Russia and you cannot impose tariffs on nonexistent trade.

Good point. What are the possible "sanctions", I wonder?

I'd hazard a guess that any back and forth between Trump and Putin has already been rehearsed and scheduled and pre-planned. Regarding Starmer, you have to remember that though is relatively new to the post of prime minister, the people working in the military and ministry of defence are not new, and they will be working very closely together. Better or worse than anyone else, who can say, but I'd not look to most newspapers to inform my opinion of how well Starmer is or isn't doing. We're already at war, the constant technological attacks, ships, planes, drones, the countries funding Russia, we're already well and truly in it.

So you have worked in the foreign office or like to guess?

You are wrong and it's not great when un-informed people bullshit.

There are decisions taken by politicians contrary to our security needs which cost us billions of dollars a year, they take these decisions because of political pressure and hysteria.

Fewer people saying less would be overall better for everyone.

I think it’s only a matter of time before Trump says he’s no longer supporting the Ukraine so they need to negotiate with Putin to bring this war to a close.
Trump doesn’t want to spend a dime outside the US.

Starmer may just be trying to make himself look good knowing that it’ll be over before he has to do anything more.

THIS.

Trump is an isolationist, his MAGA crowd HATE foreign war, this is a main who thinks Spain is a BRIC nation. My DC knows what BRIC stands for FFS...

Hopefully he's successful and puts an end to it once and for all.

Thought that was scheduled to happen during the first 24 hours of his presidency. I am sure he said he was simply going to phone Putin and that would be that. Trump lying? surely not!

HPFA · 22/01/2025 19:59

The talk is of peacekeepers going to Ukraine after a ceasefire to deter any further attacks. Not of UK troops fighting a war.

There is no point having a "peace" that simply allows Putin to rebuild his forces and attack again. Which he would want to do as he's made it clear that he doesn't think Ukraine has a right to exist as an independent state. How else are we going to deter him?

As for the Kremlin stooges on here, don't make me laugh! Putin is not scared of NATO invading, if he was he wouldn't have left his borders undefended while murdering his neighbours. And the "sacred Russian territory" he's so concerned about is now mostly in ruins.

What’s so good about foreign war and thousands dying per day?

As for pp I agree Starmer and others will benefit if Trump ends the war

Trump could cure cancer and people would still hate on him. Personally I couldn't care less about point scoring against people, Trump etc, I'd just like this war to end and best of luck to whoever is the best person to do that.

Will this bastard Starmer send his sons to fight? Like Blair did not send his sons to Iraq? Or better still, let fat Starmer go and fight - he is all for it. I don't want our boys to die, why do we have to be involved in every conflict?

I thought it was Sunak that wanted to bring back National Service. To the best of my knowledge you have to be employed in the military to engage in combat and we currently do not have consription or national service.

Nn9011 · 22/01/2025 20:04

You're not wrong in a sense but you have to understand the wider context. Ukraine is not part of NATO so at the moment we are limited with how we step in. The problem we need to prepare for is the moment Russia decides to take a step into a NATO country as this automatically is supposed to trigger a response from all members. The best way to avoid that, is by not letting Russia gain power in the way the world did with Crimea.
The other issue is that it's very possible Russia is behind much of what is happening in the US right now. Starmer showing strong commitment to Ukraine is not a coincidence in terms of the timing of the announcement.
The reason why Trump wants Canada and Greenland is because of natural resources, NATO and the link to Russia.
It's all part of a wider issue, we are essentially in a Ww3 however due to nuclear power it is a cold war being done through sideways moves and digital wars.

Couldn’t help but snort at the thought of the man who thought drinking bleach would cure covid, curing cancer. I know that’s not your point but but that is for the giggle.

Hwi · 22/01/2025 19:11

Good for him? Will you go and fight? Will your sons and daughters go? Or you want to send somebody else's children there? Good for him, my arse.

Whilst I think this would be ridiculous, and dont want us to send troops, there's no reason to suggest we'd be under conscription, there's plenty of people who have willingly joined the army, it's literally what they freely decided to sign up for.

Wont happen - MAD.

It came up on my facebook feed. Starmer was being interviewed by a sky reporter. Would it still not stoke anxiety with the link? probably more so.

Well find an actual source! It came up on my Facebook - seriously?! Why is media literacy so low

TinklySnail · 22/01/2025 20:17

Starmer would be a fool to send troops imo, we don’t have the resources to live comfortably let alone through a war we didn’t ask for.
Let’s just hope he’s a bit stronger than Blair was.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 22/01/2025 20:24

Is it combat troops or peacekeepers we’re talking about?

Peacekeepers is what Starmer has talked about. But all the scaremongering idiots on here have decided he means combat troops.

Livelovebehappy · 22/01/2025 19:00

We should stay out of it. I dont want my family wiped out on the alter of Ukraine. Has anyone noticed the silence from most ofvthecrest of Europe? Why is it always the UK that likes to put themselves in the middle of any crap. But mayb its down to who your leader is, and Starmer is scarily incompetent.

Has anyone noticed the silence from most ofvthecrest of Europe?

No, I haven't. I've noticed most of the rest of Europe pulling together in solidarity with Ukraine, putting about 100 billion Euros into defending a democracy against a dictator whose troops rape babies and castrate prisoners of war.
