To be alarmed at Starmers plans

Anybody else worried about his ongoing plans for deeper involvement in Ukraine. In an interview yesterday he said he intends to send our troops out there. Surely this would mean we’d be at war with Russia! Anyone else very concerned.

It would nice if MNHQ could clamp down on scaremongering and misinformation too.

Butchyrestingface · 22/01/2025 20:35

If Russia declares war on the UK, I'm off to live in Berwick on Tweed. They've supposedly been at war with Russia since the Crimea and the town's still standing (or what passes for it) so they must be doing something right. 😀

It's always a little surprising when people who voluntarily join the armed forces are shocked when it's suggested they might be expected to fight.

I think this is the interview op is referring to. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong op.

I think some people would be surprised at how many different countries contribute to peacekeeping, especially UN peacekeeping in places around the world.

Tbf I think there is a role for citizens saying no to troops fighting. Part of why US are not so keen on sending their young men to other wars

As much as previously anyway

How many armed forces people do you actually know? How many times have you come across this? You say “always” as though it’s something you’ve commonly experienced. I’d be surprised, because I know and have known 100s and not one of them as ever been “shocked” when they’ve received orders to go on active service. They are trained for it, expect it and sometimes even relish the opportunity to use all their training. Mostly though they just get on with it because they swore an oath that they would and know that’s what they signed up for. But would you seriously not expect them to question the stupidity and motives of politicians like Starmer bustling into a war that has very little to do with them, when everyone else is either trying to get out of it or looking very carefully the other way?

Perhaps you do think that, stupid, meathead, trained killers who choose to join the army should just do exactly what they’re told by their betters - people like you and the other lefty MNetters who think it’s “about time” we got more involved and sent working class people’s thick kids (not your uni darlings) off into a war zone.

MN is so fucking grim at times.

TheNuthatch · 22/01/2025 21:06

I heard on a podcast (can't remember which) that there were rumours that troops were discussed when Macron visited Chequers and had dinner with Starmer. Hence Beth Rigby asking Starmer the question in the interview I linked upthread.

Naunet · 22/01/2025 20:06

Whilst I think this would be ridiculous, and dont want us to send troops, there's no reason to suggest we'd be under conscription, there's plenty of people who have willingly joined the army, it's literally what they freely decided to sign up for.

What? They have signed up to protect us and our country, not to meddle in foreign interventions in every bloody country where there is conflict! I hope they refuse of say - dear MPs, please send your sons and daughters with us, otherwise we shall leave the army.

EasternStandard · 22/01/2025 21:09

@Adamante I agree with you.

We are not going to be sending the UK's young to fight in Ukraine. Stop the ridiculous hyperbole.

Oh, I see, fuck the older generation them, let them die in yet another foreign adventure - and why not - Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, and now Ukraine.

Hwi · 22/01/2025 21:11

You're getting awfully hot under the collar about something that is not going to happen, almost as if you were setting out to be inflammatory.

Sorry, the fucker signed 100-year pact with Ukraine and I am being inflammatory? Get a grip.

Did you see that bit about peacekeepers?

Do you think that countries should contribute to peacekeeping?

I just showed this post to my ex military DH. He's nodding along in agreement with you too. Spot on @Adamante

What are you on about? Starmer has said nothing at all about any troops of any age being sent into combat. What he has talked about is peacekeeping.

MN is bonkers tonight. But I guess @Rubytuesday77 is getting what he/she wanted by starting this scaremongering thread. Enjoy your frothing @Hwi and others.

Maybe you're under the impression that the UK has been supporting Ukraine because we love Ukrainians? That's not it. We've been supporting Ukraine exactly because we don't want to be fighting Russia when it rolls straight over Ukraine and moves onto the Baltic states. They're NATO members and, if they're attacked we will be at war with Russia. So we're helping the Ukrainians fight Putin so we don't have to. If we send peacekeepers to Ukraine it'll be for the same reason, to stop things before they get to our doorstep.

They’re not. My bloke wasn’t remotely shocked when he found himself in the Falklands, he was a bit surprised that the QE2 took him there though.

Yes and then they go and post cat photos on other threads and snuggle down and watch a drama on Netflix - It is a disgrace. National Service would soon stop this.

The motives seem to be about peacekeeping.

And if you do join the military - and I come from a military family, you do expect / it should not surprise you if you have to fight at some point.
