To be alarmed at Starmers plans

Anybody else worried about his ongoing plans for deeper involvement in Ukraine. In an interview yesterday he said he intends to send our troops out there. Surely this would mean we’d be at war with Russia! Anyone else very concerned.

Unless something has changed very recently all the talk on this topic I’ve seen or read have been in the context of the UK possibly contributing troops to a peacekeeping force post cessation of hostilities…not the UK contributing troops during the current war.

About time imho

We are a dot on the map. If Russia turned on us , we would get obliterated. Leave it to the US, 🇺🇸 imo.

we can’t afford war - where is the money coming from. I don’t want more taxes. It’s got nothing to do with us- we should stay well out of it .

Absolute nonsense. Why should our country risk being nuked ffs?

apricitykomorebi · 22/01/2025 17:54

@NetballHoop I guess you hold a view then that up until February 2022 he had been a professor in one of the most reputable and respected universities in the world, one who was also educated in one of the finest educational establishments in the world and come February 2022 he suddenly thought since he has nothing else to do, it would be a good idea to become a conspiracy theorist? Same goes for Prof. Meirsheimer and others like them but the BBC and the like give us reputable and trustworthy information why?

It came up on my facebook feed. Starmer was being interviewed by a sky reporter. Would it still not stoke anxiety with the link? probably more so.

Why would a link stoke anxiety?

All I can find is the stuff he said a few days ago about troops peacekeeping. Nothing about combat,

Senior military figures warn Starmer against sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine

Sir Keir Starmer has been warned the UK risks becoming a ‘national embarrassment’

I’m ex forces from an ex forces family, nearly all of whom saw active conflict, I know how it works. What we don’t want is to be sending our highly trained & skilled military off to wars to fight on sides that have absolutely no chance of winning. There has to be a peace deal, an off ramp now, and if anyone thinks there aren’t UK forces sneakily there already there then I have a bridge to sell them.

Posters on MN declaiming it “the right thing” to involve our forces in this blood bath should be willing to send their own kids surely? Or is it just for the mainly very working class people who are the major components of our forces and who join because there is literally nothing else for them in their small, very often, underfunded, Northern/Midland/Welsh/Scottish towns?

I couldn't agree more.

Thank you, to you and your family for your service to our country.

Anniedash · 22/01/2025 17:56

Starmer is a a thick moron and corrupt to boot. I would put anything past him.

MissyB1 · 22/01/2025 17:58

OP you either made this up or you totally misunderstood what you read.

duc748 · 22/01/2025 17:59

UK troops? Can't believe it. Surely, this is coming at a time when (rightly or wrongly), the West is starting to pull the plug on Zelensky. Even besides Trump, the EU, and the Germans in particular, are fed up with supporting Ukraine, Public enthusiasm for tax dollars being spent on a war far away is waning fast, in the UK and mainland Europe as well as the US.

@halfpastten The conflict in Gaza is also not as straightforward as the MSM lead us to believe and as you are undoubtedly well aware like all of us it did not start in October 2023. The reason why "everyone" and by that I mean largely the world outside G7 pushes for ceasefire and applies so much pressure on Netanyahu and his supporters is because Israel in its bid "to defend itself" unleashed what we can only refer to as genocide on the Palestinians living in Gaza. Israel was attacked by HAMAS and claims that 1,200 Israelis lost their lives in that attack and nobody defends HAMAS in that. However in response Israel decided to deploy the strategy of collective punishment on 2.5 million people living in Gaza most of which are now displaced as refugees, their homes destroyed and many of their children killed. What you refer to as 1.7M young Ukrainian men are people which the Ukrainian government sent to the frontlines to fight. In that sense, they are soldiers of their army. The "tiny number" of people killed in Gaza are civilians killed as a result of Israel's strikes on their homes, hospitals, schools. More than half of those people are children and many are under the age of 12.

These are just some horror stories from Gaza:

s

Presumably the discrepancy is because the Gazans getting killed are the civilians who are left unprotected on the front line while their 'soldiers' are hiding away behind them.

WishinAndHopin · 22/01/2025 18:02

Yes this is terrifying. This is the beginning of WW3.

Im sick of propping up this unwinnable war. Russia is a massive rich country compared to Ukraine, they will always lose without endless outside support, which ultimately is WW3.

I’m sick of propping up Zelenskyy’s utter failure.

He was voted in with a promise to appeal to both the Ukrainian and ethnic Russian minority and to unite the separatist regions - he has completely failed. The regions still want to be separate. He has banned all left wing political parties and banned elections. He’s just an evil egotistical dictator who is fighting an unwinnable war because he won’t accept that he failed. And half a million men have died.

Starmer is evil for keeping us embroiled in this hell and risking further escalation with Russia. Trump will be pulling out so it will be even harder for Europe keep supporting this lost cause.

Sad for Ukraine but Zelenskyy should have accepted the peace deal in April 2022.

pointythings · 22/01/2025 18:07

And this thread just shows how easy it is to scaremonger. OP, you were very irresponsible to post Facebook hearsay without any source. Unless of course you were aiming to post another 'oh, isn't that nasty Starmer awful' thread, in which case you have achieved your objective. Bravo.

Zelensky's failure? His country was invaded by the savages who are living in the last century

And have you seen the terms of this "deal" - surrender and capitulation

interested in your views on how he should run elections while the savages are murdering and destroying his country - and elections are not permitted during martial law, but I suppose that doesn't matter to you

I've read quite a few awful posts, but frankly with your level of victim blaming, I've never felt quite so disgusted

Reminder

Russia invaded Ukraine. That's it

We're already in WW3

This thread is part of it

Shouldn't come as any surprise, one thing labour governments are good at is sending British troops to die and yes I have lost a loved one through war the last time labour were in power.

Not much of a risk though is it? We also own nukes and I'm sure the Russians wouldn't welcome any return fire.

I for one cannot wait for the day when accusing anyone who doesn’t agree with you of being a “Russian Bot” is met with the ridicule and derision it deserves. Though I admit that day may never come here on MN 🙄

pizzaHeart · 22/01/2025 18:13

apricitykomorebi · 22/01/2025 16:58

I have been following the conflict in Ukraine since 2014. It is not as straightforward as the papers and other MSM lead us to believe, i.e. it's not entirely unprovoked and it's not "all Russia's fault" as they tell us. It's much more nuanced than that, and I must say I have been quite concerned that there is not at the very minimum more people in the government that at least call for some caution! Everyone is constantly running around all guns blazing calling for more and more offensive weapons to be sent to Ukraine and more and more money to keep this war going. Unfortunately, this only means more deaths and more destruction for Ukraine and brings us closer to the brink of either WWIII or a nuclear war and frankly I am not that sure that anyone in the government fully comprehends the implications. It's been too long since WWII and it's as if everyone has forgotten what it means to live through such a horrific event!

@apricitykomorebi
Saying that Russia was provoked is the same as saying that a victim of rape provoked attack by not staying at home.
It’s very simple. Russia invaded another country with mass killings and destruction.

ginasevern · 22/01/2025 18:13

Adamante · 22/01/2025 17:12

As a previous poster said, I think it’s highly likely Trump will put an end to this war and SM will still clamour and moan about how dreadful he is. Starmer is just ridiculous, he is completely out of his depth, I’m tired of his rabbit in the headlights interviews that give no reassurance whatsoever.

How did you feel about Boris Johnson's frenetic support for Ukraine?

We won’t be at war with Russia. His dumb ass isn’t explaining clearly. British soldiers would only be boots on the ground in Ukraine as peacekeepers once there has been a negotiated peace deal. We would not join as an active participant of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
