Aibu to suggest you should delete it even if it's not currently being used.

It occurred to me today that whilst I no longer use it, just the act of having an account supports Elon Musk's world view which I do not share!!! (Understatement. Todays outburst against one of his few supporters in Europe made me think I need to act in this small way, if hundreds of thousands, millions also think along the same lines we can send a message (he won't hear but can but try)

I technically still do, but I've never really used it and can't even remember my password now. I got it to follow one particular person (someone I know, although they are also very mildly famous in a very niche interest) after they stopped using Facebook, never posted anything myself, and that person has now stopped using Twitter too and is, I think, mainly to be found on Mastodon, which I just don't understand at all.

The format of Twitter is not really what I want to use, whoever's running it. I just want to interact with people I know.

Doggymummar · 05/01/2025 20:41

No

catkatcatkat · 05/01/2025 20:42

I deleted mine.

Valid8me · 05/01/2025 20:43

I use mine - I don't want to delete it just because you don't like Elon Musk. I mean, I don't much like him either but I'm not deleting my account.

JHound · 05/01/2025 20:44

I did and deleted it when Apartheid Clyde took over - the spike in racist posts was enough for me.

Everything since then has confirmed me it was the right choice. Especially Leon’s retweeting of and constant sharing of racist posts and promotion of anti-immigrant tropes (such as the stupid “cats and dogs” anti-Haitian migrant nonsense and support for the “Great Replacement trope”

It just seems to be a toxic wasteland from what I see shared.

Getmeonaflight · 05/01/2025 20:44

Yes..I love X.

MakeItRain · 05/01/2025 20:45

I used to enjoy Twitter/X and miss the news and debates as I followed a lot of interesting people. I deleted my account a while ago though, because I was increasingly uncomfortable about using it for the reasons you mention.

Sampler · 05/01/2025 20:46

I deleted mine a few months ago when he went weirder. Found it a chess pit tbh.

MrsSethGecko · 05/01/2025 20:46

No. Never have.

BIWI · 05/01/2025 20:47

No I deleted mine and moved over to bluesky.

I used to love Twitter, back in the day! But since Musk bought it, I can't bear to be there any more.

bluesky is shaping up well, so far.

moogdroog · 05/01/2025 20:49

No. I'm keeping it.
Besides, I wouldn't last 5 minutes on BlueSky before being banned as I don't believe that men can be women.

Circumferences · 05/01/2025 20:50

No I quite like Elon Musk and agree with much of what he says so I'll keep my account thank you

Mingenious · 05/01/2025 20:50

I do but I never use it. I thought twitter was shit long before Elon Musk came along.

Baileysatchristmas · 05/01/2025 20:51

I don't have an account on Twitter/X and never did!

RedDogBowl · 05/01/2025 20:52

Yes I do. I loved Twitter ten years ago. I barely use it all now and never post.

You’ll still tend to find breaking news earliest on there - however you have to be able to pick though the guff and bots and the angriness increasingly to find it.

My biggest issue with Twitter is ironically around free speech. I think the platform curbs free speech. I want to be interested, intrigued, engaged. I don’t want a fucking bunfight or to be ridiculed, name called or castigated. That’s not because I am “woke” or a “leftie”, but because it’s unpleasant.

I am a heavy news reader though and would always encourage people to read a broad range of platforms to get a rounded view.

Almn0etd · 05/01/2025 20:53

So this is your answer to the problem? Rather than demanding and holding our government/s to account on industrial scale corruption and incompetence, the answer is to delete a social media account.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what wrong. Pointless virtue signalling rather than holding people to account.

Musk is not responsible to stirring up tensions. Governments of the las 30 years, councils and the useless, corrupt police force in this country is responsible by not fulfilling their responsibility.

iwantavuvezela · 05/01/2025 20:54

Deleted and moved over to Bluesky - I feel much better mentally not reading all the right wing posts / general unpleasantness / fake news

ThisIsSockward · 05/01/2025 20:55

I don't tweet often, but I'm staying for now. It's still a useful tool, and as you choose who to follow, mute, etc, you have a decent amount of control over your experience. If I boycotted everything owned or run by people with whom I disagree, there wouldn't be much left! And actually I agree with some of what Musk is saying, anyway.

Slobberchops1 · 05/01/2025 20:55

I deleted mine when that prat took it over

Ohnonotmeagain · 05/01/2025 20:56

I do have an account.

i keep it because it amuses me to see the utter stupidity in this world. It also keeps me informed of what the idiots are thinking so I can challenge if it comes up irl.

plus jk Rowling. And Sandford police, who have been banned for issuing an arrest threat against Musk 😂.

TickingAlongNicely · 05/01/2025 20:57

I have X simply for the updates from school. For example, at 6am tomorrow they will be posting whether the school is open.

Mysterian · 05/01/2025 20:57

Deleted and moved to Bluesky. Thinking of doing the same with Facebook too. Just too much hate and sexism and racism that gets ignored.

Sampler · 05/01/2025 20:57

To previous PP - it’s not pointless virtue signalling - it’s really gone to shit and not worth the effort to wade through to find anything useful. Ok if I needed to for work or whatever in that capacity and had no choice - but I have a choice thank fuck and choose to leave that quagmire.

RisingSunn · 05/01/2025 20:58

I deleted - it became such a negative space.

PlumHedgehog01 · 05/01/2025 21:05

nah, never saw the fuss about it
