Aibu to suggest you should delete it even if it's not currently being used.

It occurred to me today that whilst I no longer use it, just the act of having an account supports Elon Musk's world view which I do not share!!! (Understatement. Todays outburst against one of his few supporters in Europe made me think I need to act in this small way, if hundreds of thousands, millions also think along the same lines we can send a message (he won't hear but can but try)

OP posts:
hazelnutvanillalatte · 05/01/2025 22:32

Not anymore. Don't want to support Musk and functionally it's gone to shit

cariadlet · 05/01/2025 22:34

I love Terfy Twitter. Since Elon Musk took over, women are no longer banned for failing to pretend that men can become women.

Lots of good stuff from women's rights campaigners. Good for other news eg what's happening in Afghanistan and Iran.

Still plenty of active accounts tweeting about things I'm interested in eg nature, science, climate change, art.

I know Musk has his rants and there are racists and mad conspiracy theorists on Twitter but none of that crops up in my feed so I can ignore it.

MasterBeth · 05/01/2025 22:35

Used to love Twitter. It's got way worse as X - paid-for blue ticks, monetisation, constantly moving you from your own chosen feeds to random shit you're not interested in, even before we get to the taking-over by hste-mongers, Russian bots and automated porn accounts

I stuck it out for a bit but have now deleted my account and am now on BlueSky which is less good than Twitter at its peak but much better than X is now.

Hairyfairy01 · 05/01/2025 22:38

Deleted and moved to bluesky about a month to go. Got sick of all the right wing shit on there.

Whatifitallgoesright · 05/01/2025 22:44

Yes I do and no I won't be deleting it. I see a lot of UK stories that don't get to national news. I get a lot of useful information I'd never see on MSM. I see a range of views and I follow people I don't necessarily agree with so I'm not trapped in a small-minded echo chamber.

Whatifitallgoesright · 06/01/2025 12:28

Also, where else do you get this sort of gold?

Do you have a Twitter/X account?
BobnLen · 06/01/2025 12:31

I use it for contacting companies and for if I need to complain, also for local stuff, I don't want to have to sign up to Facebook instead to do this. So no, I won't be deleting.

EllaPaella · 06/01/2025 12:34

It's full of facist, racist, hate filled crap. It's like the comments section of the daily mail. I had account for work purposes but have now deleted it.

BestIsWest · 06/01/2025 12:39

Deleted last year. I’m on Bluesky and Threads but don’t love either as much as I loved Twitter years ago.

miraxxx · 06/01/2025 12:44

X is great - you have a block key, use it! Musk has freed X from sanctimonious fools like the OP and done the tens of thousands child rape survivors a huge favour - ask them, they have a voice on twitter too and are using it. I know that it discomfits of the 'positivity' of the notice-nothing crowd but you are no loss.

Lambington · 06/01/2025 13:48

Not any more. I deleted it last month when Musk was promoting the German neo nazi party.
I won't have that filth on my phone.

That’s pretty low. I don’t think you really believe that Brits are leaving Twitter because they don’t want rape victims to be heard.

biscuitsandbooks · 06/01/2025 14:04

Not anymore - mine got suspended for absolutely no reason whatsoever 😂

This. I also lurk on Bluesky and it's awful and not nearly as free of crappy stuff as people think it is.

dandelionandbirdcock · 06/01/2025 14:09

I deleted my Twitter account a few months ago and signed up to Bluesky. I used to love Twitter, there were some hilarious people on there. Now it’s just a cesspit of conspiracy theories, lies and very angry people. It’s actually a bit depressing to spend any time on there.

HermioneWeasley · 06/01/2025 14:11

I won’t be deleting mine as you can’t say on blueskye that men aren’t women

Brefugee · 06/01/2025 14:15

IME that is down to either who you're following or what tweets you are engaging with.

Mine is full of birds, otters, kittens and art.

It's also full of some terfy stuff because that's what i look at. and I'm keeping an eye on some accounts of what is happening to women in Iran and Afghanistan and now Syria.

it is very easy to clean your timeline: check who you're following for starters. (now you can block and be blocked but still see what they post, it's quite interesting); on your feed don't click the "for you" but the "following" tab. And scroll until you see something you like. Give it a like or a RT or both. This affects your algorithm (and if you start getting Dark Depressing Twitter you just look for #Cabybara or #Kittens or #BabyPandas and like all the nice posts that come up.

FWIW: Bluesky seems like a bit of an echo chamber, but i am also careful who i follow etc and it's ok. But it's like chewing through All Bran because it's good for you rather than Froot Loops because they're tasty and fun.

Magicpaintbrush · 06/01/2025 14:17

I think Musk is a very dangerous man. This sentence actually sent chills through me when I read it on the bbc: "On Monday, Musk started a poll asking X users to vote on whether "America should liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government". WTAF?? Labour were voted in via a process called Democracy - they won the majority. When the next G.E is called people can choose to vote otherwise if they wish. But suggesting the British government should be overthrown by America, what the hell?! I can't even begin to get my head around a comment that inflammatory and out of order by one of the most powerful men int he world, it is genuinely chilling. Musk is an advisor to Trump. He's not British, and therefore should have no say in British democratic outcomes that we, the British people, have voted for. And if you journey back a couple of weeks with Trump heavily suggesting that he'd be prepared to make a move on Greenland, despite it being a territory of Denmark.... Well, between the two of them this has echoes of Hitler eyeing up Poland. These men are too powerful, they are dangerous and they are maneuvering to gain power in sovereign lands not of their own. WTF.

This thread is precisely about that. What is low the instinct to avoid unpleasant news and the authoritarian call to censor or cancel free speech platforms. Dont cry when all ground has been ceded to the deplorables and fascists because you wanted to chase butterflies and frolic with unicorns.

OooPourUsACupLove · 06/01/2025 14:19

I have two, one professional and one personal. I don't post with either and I never block anyone. The professional one follows topics relevant to my role and the personal one follows some local news sites. I use the personal one to read things that are not relevant to my role so my personal interests don't influence the algo for my professional feed and vice versa.

I don't love the algorithms or indeed Musk. Some of the stuff I get shown by default makes me feel grubby. However, I think it's important I see what is actually being said so I do not want to move to Bluesky or similar where I'll only hear things I agree with, and where everything I hear about what people with different ideas to me think is coming to me second hand from people with their own biases and agendas whether those agendas be to minimise or to inflame. The older I get, the more echo chambers scare me.

EveryDayisFriday · 06/01/2025 14:22

I've had one for years and don't use it. I have a blue-sky account for when it does crumble.

I'm also not getting rid of my Tesla.

I agree that Elon is a cock though.

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/01/2025 14:23

I loved Twitter so much but Musk ruined it. I deleted my account completely. It was a shame but I just couldn't be part of it any longer.

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 06/01/2025 14:23

Circumferences · 05/01/2025 20:50

No I quite like Elon Musk and agree with much of what he says so I'll keep my account thank you

I agree!

All the Lefty's have been disappearing in droves!

u3ername · 06/01/2025 14:33

I deleted my old inactive account after his weird tweet to Taylor Swift.
I still see the weird things he has to say as people repost them on other SM.

pastala · 06/01/2025 14:33

I have an X account and it's one of the main apps I browse. I probably use it differently from most people, I tend to follow for news stories and specific accounts linked to an interest of mine - I don't post anything myself and I don't follow individual celebs or anyone I know. It's particularly handy for travel news or disruptions, or searching for new/opinions about a specific area or topic, and sometimes about local events. I miss a lot of the opinionated stuff because that's not what I choose to look for.
