Aibu to suggest you should delete it even if it's not currently being used.

It occurred to me today that whilst I no longer use it, just the act of having an account supports Elon Musk's world view which I do not share!!! (Understatement. Todays outburst against one of his few supporters in Europe made me think I need to act in this small way, if hundreds of thousands, millions also think along the same lines we can send a message (he won't hear but can but try)

OP posts:
slightlydistrac · 06/01/2025 15:46

I set one up years ago and got bored very quickly. Haven't used it for a very long time.

OneLemonDog · 06/01/2025 15:46

I deleted mine a month or so after Musk bought it, after my feed became full of alt-right stuff.

LightUpMyStars · 06/01/2025 15:49

I would also recommend deleting tbh. Their customer service/ support is non existent when you need it and if your account gets suspended then you have absolutely no control over it. Can't delete it, remove you picture, change password, anything. They effectively hold your data/information captive.

I posted on chat about this a few days ago (no one responded though 😅) and I had a lot of suspicious activity related to my email address and X decided to suspend my account as a result. I now have no way of deactivating for my own security because they just don't respond! Never had any suspensions or been reported up till this issue.

So yeah, deactivate while you have the chance.

SallyWD · 06/01/2025 15:51

I absolutely hate it because of Elon and I barely use it. I've switched to Blue Sky. However, I do think good people need to stay on and challenge what's there, confront some of the blatant lies being told.

Brefugee · 06/01/2025 15:51

well there are obviously ways because one of my contacts on there had their account suspended for 3 months, had dialogue for all that time with them (they are slow to respond) but eventually they agreed that the suspension had been unwarranted and reinstated the account.

I assumed they'd just left.

WilmaFlintstone1 · 06/01/2025 15:55

I use it but blocked that prat immediately

I troll right wing racists.

starrynight19 · 06/01/2025 15:58

I used to love it and now only have it for the football.
Elon stands for free speech but then limits posters reach when they disagree with him. He is becoming more and more deranged as the days go on.
Hoping the football accounts take off on Blue sky and then i will leave.

Deerrobin · 06/01/2025 15:59

I deleted it a few months ago and moved over to Bluesky. The ongoing algorithm changes pushing nonsense and hate to try to provoke reaction, proliferation of bots and erosion of tools to control what you see etc made it stop being an enjoyable thing to spend my time on. I do also dislike Musk and fear the level of control he has across the globe, but I know that my leaving X has no real influence on any of that.

CeceliaImrie · 06/01/2025 16:00

No, I used to enjoy it years ago but I deleted it once that awful man took it over.

aModernClassic · 06/01/2025 16:01

I use it everyday. It's the only way to really know what is happening in our country. So, I'll be keeping it, thanks.

OooPourUsACupLove · 06/01/2025 15:24

I do too but I'm not sure heavy moderation and banned topics is the way to handle it.

When the rubbish/lies are visible you can see exactly what is being said and see the counter arguments and rebuttals. It helps strengthen the pushback, and it stops people living in echo chambers then being shocked when elections or social groups don't do what they expect.

If you are going to allow someone to filter it out for you so you never have to see it you better be very very sure you can trust that person.

I have an account but don't post, but this is the reason I like twitter (even more so since it was bought).

I like that the latest scandal with the rape gangs came about because journalists started literally just posting screenshots and links to primary sources that people could read directly and verify for themselves.

I like the Community Notes feature.

I like that the 2024 US election was completely unsurprising to me, even down to the state level. I felt this was really a win: in 2016 I also used (old) twitter and was shocked and appalled that somehow HRC didn't win all 50 states. I had friends last year who were still somehow shocked that Trump won - because they stuck to their old echo chambers. The same friends have been shocked at various election results on the continent as well.

Radiatorvalves · 06/01/2025 16:09

Deleted about 6 months ago and feel better for it. Have BlueSky but don’t go there often - trying to spend less time on SM.

I didn’t post much but once said something positively about my son getting a Covid vax and was accused of being a child killer. Nice.

He absolutely does this which is why I think his fans, and those who claims he is pro “free speech” are morons.

TrixieFatell · 06/01/2025 18:34

I deleted mine today. I used it for midwifery research links, and following the odd comedian on it. But it's just full of right wing posts all the time and you can't avoid them. I did try as I don't like echo chambers but it is an echo chamber, just for the right wing brigade. Real life isn't like that, it was depressing the life out of me.

AuntieSoap · 06/01/2025 18:43

Nope, I deactivated mine because I don't want to prop up Elon Musk

That's it, for me. If Musk had just tweaked the algorithm so that people saw more views that didn't align with their own, fine, but for me (and many others) our feeds went from "here's stuff related to your interests" to "here's a bunch of conspiracy theories, alt right commenters and ads".

I also was deeply disturbed by Elon deciding allowing right wing influences and, in particular, Andrew Tate, to monetize their content.

If he wanted to stop twitter being an echo chamber, fine, but instead he just made it a right wing one (and generally not the mainstream right).

Twitter is just a propaganda tool now.

Yes exactly this. I used to enjoy Twitter. It was a pleasant place to be that reflected my interests. All of a sudden my feed was full of racist, right wingers. I started to feel tense when I checked it every day and thought "Why am I doing this to myself?". It's so liberating to be free of it.

PermanentTemporary · 06/01/2025 19:59

I will admit that today I laughed out loud at the 'America should overthrow the British tyrannical government' tweet. He's such a tosser but that was funny. He basically sounds like the Tea Party version of Keith Spart. Just shows how bored you can get with too much money and too much childcare so you never see any of your twelve kids.

itsgettingweird · 06/01/2025 20:01

I recently deleted my dormant account.

Which was A LOT harder than I thought as I couldn't remember the password!

Moonlightstars · 06/01/2025 20:03

Almn0etd · 05/01/2025 20:53

So this is your answer to the problem? Rather than demanding and holding our government/s to account on industrial scale corruption and incompetence, the answer is to delete a social media account.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what wrong. Pointless virtue signalling rather than holding people to account.

Musk is not responsible to stirring up tensions. Governments of the las 30 years, councils and the useless, corrupt police force in this country is responsible by not fulfilling their responsibility.

How is he holding our government to account? He should be querying why nothing has been done since the 2022 report. He is praising Badenoch yet failing to criticise her party for doing sweet FA for years. He is using the abuse of women and girls for his own ends. What a sick fucker he is.

Sortumn · 06/01/2025 20:08

I don't post but there are various accounts that I follow that I enjoy. I'm ambivalent about Musk and take him with a pinch of salt.

WomanFromTheNorth · 06/01/2025 20:08

Deleted mine and joined Bluesky.

StrawberryWater · 06/01/2025 20:11

I use Bluesky now.

Not as busy and my followers have dropped but it's so much nicer over there and not come across too many dickheads either.

u3ername · 07/01/2025 20:09

When businesses stop using it, it will make a huge difference.
As pp mentioned, a lot of people are on there just because they get prompt customer service. When a few big brands leave, it will be the actual end of what was twitter.

FlorbelaEspanca · 08/01/2025 00:21

I have an account but only to read others' posts - I don't tweet myself and never have. It is a genre which seems to coerce its users - oh so gently - into writing in its peculiar argot rather than altogether as themselves. Even though I realise this, I fear I would be a victim myself so I keep away. I would ideally like to delete my account but not enough of the people it can be informative to read have yet gone elsewhere.
