To not get the love for Bluey?

I think it will be an overwhelming wave of YABU based on how popular it is, but I just don't get the Bluey hype.

I was oblivious to it for years but lots of people were raving about it so I put it on one day for my 3 year old. We were both a bit bamboozled. He couldn't sit through an episode and wandered off. I found it very irritating- loud, whiny voices, irritating characters. One episode had the dad doing a mad sock puppet thing and the other episode was about kids on FaceTime. It was utter chaos and my son was nonplussed. I think because it was so chaotic and without any story to it. I find the colours really bland too.

It seems to be a hit with parents first, who put it on because of all the jokes they can appreciate that are over the kids' heads.

My son loves The Moomins, Postman Pat, all of the Julie Donaldson animations, The Wombles, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine and so on. He seems to really enjoy programmes that were made with real models in particular and these just seem so much more well made than Bluey, and have a gentler feel and better storytelling.

Yeah YABU. But my kids were a bit older, maybe 6ish, when we discovered it. It was really nice to find a programme we could all enjoy together, my parents loved it too. But it’s up to you what you enjoy (just as long as it’s not fucking Bing)

I think you will be one of only a few with this opinion! We are a Bluey loving household, adults and children alike and mine are 11 and 7. We still stick it on at lunchtime for 10 mins sometimes. Faceytalk is one of our favourites!

It’s charming, silly, reminds me of my two girls, funny for adults and children alike. One of my favourite videos is of dd2 when she was about 3 years old, sitting in a little kids deckchair absolutely crying with laughter at Bingo messing about with a hose.

bakewellbride · 02/01/2025 20:51

Watch the sleepy time episode, it's gentle and moving, nothing like the 2 you described.

Yabu for saying they have no story, there is always a clear storyline to each episode.

I kind of see where you're coming from beyond felt a bit like you after just one episode but I gave it time and it really is genius. Toddler, 6 year old, dh and me all love it and that's something!

TwentyTwentyFive · 02/01/2025 20:53

YABU they have clear stories and some of the episodes are pure art.

I'm also a bit confused as to how you started with two episodes that are in the middle of a season and not even next to each other surely you start on season 1 episode 1???

I couldn't focus on any story through all the shouting and whining. The FaceTime one was a lot of running about and bedlam. Maybe I picked bad episodes, I just picked them at random.

I think it looks nice enough, but quite bland with the insipid colours palette. And there are some absolutely dire kids shows out there so I'm sure the love for the programme is testament to something. I just don't get it myself.

They were just at random. We don't have a telly, we chromecast things when we want to watch something. I gave it a try on YouTube but it wasn't for me. My son couldn't have cared less either.

YANBU I think some episodes are sweet and Sleepytime is wonderful but the screeching and shouting are almost intolerable to me. Not one to have on in the background!

bakewellbride · 02/01/2025 20:58

Facey talk is one of my favourite episodes of all time so we clearly just have to agree to disagree op! (Other fave is pass the parcel)

It's very screechy and that's just not something I want playing in my house either. If it's reflective of real life with kids, it's not what I recognise from our day to day life. Thank god!

YABVVVU! Bluey is one of my top TV shows! Sleepytime, Fairytale and Shadowlands are some of my absolute favourites.

JetskiSkyJumper · 02/01/2025 21:01

It's an upgrade on peppa pig

TwentyTwentyFive · 02/01/2025 21:01

What about them do you think is art?

The way they tell stories that can make you laugh and cry and cry more and then laugh again in the space of just 7 minutes. Some of the episodes are wonderful examples of storytelling and focus on those moments as parents you think no one else feels so you feel seen.

Honestly you chose two of the loudest episodes. Start from the beginning, grow with the heelers and you'll soon see why it's so popular.

Postchristmasblah · 02/01/2025 21:01

You’ve picked the wrong episodes but YABVVU in general. I hate the unicorse episode (the sock puppet one) and any with Bluey’s cousin Muffin are quite bonkers, but some of them are just beautiful.

I agree about sleepytime but I also like baby race and fairytale. Some of them are surprisingly deep.

peachgreen · 02/01/2025 21:01

The increasing levels of smuggery in your posts have only reaffirmed my conclusion that this is a rage bait post!

Sinkintotheswamp · 02/01/2025 21:01

Yanbu. I've tried really hard to appreciate it. It just bores me.

Hey Dugee is much funnier.

pjani · 02/01/2025 21:02

Your DC is too young - way too much dialogue for a 3yo imo. Try again when they are 5 and you’ll both enjoy it a lot more I’d say.

Postchristmasblah · 02/01/2025 21:02

Oh and pavlova - genius!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 02/01/2025 21:03

The screechy, Australian accents are irritating but so are most children's voices at times. It's very relatable and we absolutely love it....

Minidriverinmorewaysthan1 · 02/01/2025 21:03

Faceytalk is one of my favourites! I even subjected my year 3/4 class to it at the end of term before Christmas (to be fair, they did ask to watch Bluey!) Love Muffin! 😆 Definitely I think give it another chance- Sleepytime and Baby Race are just such delightful episodes and make this peri-menopausal mum blub every time I watch them 🤣
I recently heard that they're making a Bluey movie, coming out in 2027, so I've asked DS who's currently 7 if future 10 year old DS would like to come with me. It's a date! 😆

TheUsualChaos · 02/01/2025 21:03

Age three is still too young to really get Bluey tbh. I'd say age 6+ is ideal. Give it time 😆

bakewellbride · 02/01/2025 21:03

Muffin is MEANT to be a brat, it's part of the comedy, not meant to be 'reflective of real life' I think you are missing the point of that one particular episode op. Thats like not liking Charlie and the chocolate factory because you think veruca salt is meant to be like all kids and she's not, why not etc.

Sleepy time, shadow lands and loads of other episodes don't feature muffin. Onesies is very moving and makes me cry.

MrsSethGecko · 02/01/2025 21:04

I dislike Bluey intensely. Hey Duggee gets my vote.

bakewellbride · 02/01/2025 21:04

@Minidriverinmorewaysthan1 oh yes baby race, how could I forget! A beautiful episode. And grandad!!

ScaryM0nster · 02/01/2025 21:04

Watch Blippi and Peppa Pig, and then reevaluate Bluey.

Of ‘current’ stuff it’s one of the better ones around.

I still prefer classics though.

TheStarfire · 02/01/2025 21:05

I love bluey but it took me a few watches to get into it tbh. I also mistakenly thought Bluey and Bingo were boys for ages
