To not get the love for Bluey?

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 20:47

I think it will be an overwhelming wave of YABU based on how popular it is, but I just don't get the Bluey hype.

I was oblivious to it for years but lots of people were raving about it so I put it on one day for my 3 year old. We were both a bit bamboozled. He couldn't sit through an episode and wandered off. I found it very irritating- loud, whiny voices, irritating characters. One episode had the dad doing a mad sock puppet thing and the other episode was about kids on FaceTime. It was utter chaos and my son was nonplussed. I think because it was so chaotic and without any story to it. I find the colours really bland too.

It seems to be a hit with parents first, who put it on because of all the jokes they can appreciate that are over the kids' heads.

My son loves The Moomins, Postman Pat, all of the Julie Donaldson animations, The Wombles, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine and so on. He seems to really enjoy programmes that were made with real models in particular and these just seem so much more well made than Bluey, and have a gentler feel and better storytelling.

The music is great. The rest is too try hard.

YANBU but dude... I am a single and 40yo and I love watching Bluey.

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 02/01/2025 21:46

Absolutely love it! I’ve cried at a few episodes but absolutely sobbed at The Sign, I think it’s one of the best made things on tv.

Drivingoverlemons · 02/01/2025 21:48

Odd thing to post so lengthily about OP. Like whatever you like!

@ScaryM0nster

In which case you’ve got totally the wrong reference frame to appreciate Bluey’s place in the kids tv hierarchy.

It’s not a patch on pingu. It’s bliss compared to most other current stuff.

That's a shame if that's the case for current kids TV. There are plenty of classics to choose from though. My son loves Moomins, Old Bear Stories, The Wombles, Thomas the Tank Engine, Postman Pat etc. All excellent.

There are some great quality programmes still being made it seems. He loves all the Julia Donaldson adaptations, and I think they're lovely. He also loves The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Mog's Christmas. He's also currently full of facts he's learnt from Andy's Wild Adventures.

Full of facts 😂😂😂

My 3 year old likes Bluey, mostly the slapstick comedy but they are quite attached to Bingo so any bingo heavy episodes they like, they tune out of the others. They love turtle boy. I don’t think they grasp the whole concept behind it but just the idea of playing with a new toy at the park.

I like Bluey because I feel it’s reflective of parenting. You have some really annoying days, the two episodes you watched. You have some lovely days. You have some days that are challenging but end on a nice note. I love the cricket episode too (don’t even like cricket) and rain is beautiful. I think in something like Duggee it always works out, whereas in Bluey it doesn’t and I like that as I feel it’s a bit more reflective of real life.

Peppa pig is fine. It’s funny in some parts and it has the odd moment but Peppa can also be a brat. Cocomelon the songs are annoying but at least they are all teaching something. However, I feel that cocomelon and Peppa bring out the worst behaviour in DC, so we only allow small amounts of it. If you don’t like it though, don’t watch it. Or just quietly rage if your kid likes it - which is what I do with fireman Sam. There are 4 ish staff in that fire station but the only competent one is bloody Sam and he’s somehow meant to keep this entire Welsh village that is determined to kill themselves safe? Also, it’s always Norman Price surely by now social services or the police should be involved?

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 02/01/2025 21:50

I honestly can’t stand Peppa Pig, Bing and some other shows mentioned here.

However, Bluey has been a breath of fresh air in the cartoons for children category and I could watch any episode anytime over some other shows.

I have also been known to shed a few tears in some of the episodes.

So yes, you’re being very unreasonable. I can’t see myself crying with Peppa pig 🤣

TruffleShuffles · 02/01/2025 21:51

It’s complete and utter genius. The writers are up there with the absolute best in the world of TV, how they make something that makes children laugh and adults cry in the space of minutes is baffling. My kids are smiling the whole way through onesies whilst I’m sitting bawling as they have managed to portray 2 completely different subjects in minutes.

Also nothing has ever portrayed being the parent of more than one child quite like ‘takeaway’.

Oh c’mon – “we don’t have a telly” “my son likes gentler, better-made programmes” “all that screeching just isn’t representative of my life”…

Yes, I said they have a gentler feel and better story-telling to the screeching madness I saw in Bluey. I said my son is drawn to programmes with real models, not that they are better made. We both enjoy animated programmes as well, he is just drawn to stop motion particularly.

As for the "don't have a telly"... we clearly watch tv as this thread is about watching tv 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I don't get your point. I said we don't have a telly in response to a poster who asked why the particular episodes we watched were from the middle of a series rather than starting at the beginning.

You seem to want to paint this as being about snobbery, when I'm just asking about the hype around a particular programme I don't think is very good. We obviously watch plenty of tv. There's a long list of programmes right in the OP.

And yes, screeching is not something I recognise from our family life.

I do. It's a chat forum. The programme was recommended by a lot of people and seems to be massively popular. So I'm talking about it.

I see quite a lot of posters on this thread agree with me.

I have a 22 month old granddaughter and she's absolutely in love with Bluey and Bingo. And now I am.

AngelinaFibres · 02/01/2025 21:54

We are grandparents and watch Bluey with our grandson ( nearly 3) at the end of the time he is with us on Mondays. He loves it. It's part of our routine. Tidy up time, whizz hoover round, watch a bit of Bluey. He is absolutely by it and laughs along. We think it's very clever. The episode where grandpa visits and they show him how ordering takeaways on a app works is hilarious.

I love Fireman Sam I think it's actually hilarious!!!! That Norman Price is a right terror though 😂.
I love Elvis and Station Officer Steve- some of their banter absolutely cracks me up!

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 02/01/2025 22:01

My 3 year old loves it. I think it's fine and some episodes are lovely, but I agree the screechyness and screamy giggles are irritating. It's one of the better current kid's TV shows though.

I also don't get why some adults seem to make liking Bluey part of their personality eg. declaring 'oh we're a Bluey household' or proclaiming they 'sob' their way through multiple episodes, or apparently joining FB groups about it like I've just read on here?! Like calm down! You don't hear the same about other lovely children's shows, it's weird.

AhBiscuits · 02/01/2025 22:01

Some of the episodes show the hard bits about parenting so beautifully. Baby Race really hit home for me because DD was a bum shuffler and late walker. It was such an anxious time. The writers are so clever, expressing all those fears and pressures of being a new mum in 10 minutes using a cartoon dog. Mine are 7 and 9 now but it brings it all back. They both love Bluey. DH not so much as they now often call him Big Feller 😄

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 22:06

😂

The number of fire related accidents for a village of about ten people is insane. "NORMAN!" shouted like his mother does was one of my son's first words.

I adore Bluey and the Unicorse episode with the puppet makes me want to turn it off immediately. I’m pretty ambiguous about Baby Race and Sleepytime, which are usually the favourites, however I could watch Cricket, Rain and the one where Lucky’s dad changes up pass-the-parcel over and over again.

yep I disliked the unicorse episode too - was odd compared to the others. but otherwise love bluey

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:11

Oh my word this is the first mumsnet thread ive ever seen and said 'Whaaaat!!'. how can you not like bluey? you need to watch them all and then watch The Sign. Then you will see.

Martymcfly24 · 02/01/2025 22:11

Yabu.

I was turning on something on Disney for my class of 11 year olds during wet break before Christmas break and when they saw Bluey (because it's Dd's absolute favorite) they insisted on it and watched it quietly for half an hour even my seriously tough guys!

I like the New Year's Day episode where the parents are hungover and the one about Chili's mum who has passed away drawing horses.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:12

Now having an argument with DH- he said you need to watch the planets one to really see......

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:13

Chillis mum didnt pass away? did i miss something?
