To not get the love for Bluey?

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 20:47

I think it will be an overwhelming wave of YABU based on how popular it is, but I just don't get the Bluey hype.

I was oblivious to it for years but lots of people were raving about it so I put it on one day for my 3 year old. We were both a bit bamboozled. He couldn't sit through an episode and wandered off. I found it very irritating- loud, whiny voices, irritating characters. One episode had the dad doing a mad sock puppet thing and the other episode was about kids on FaceTime. It was utter chaos and my son was nonplussed. I think because it was so chaotic and without any story to it. I find the colours really bland too.

It seems to be a hit with parents first, who put it on because of all the jokes they can appreciate that are over the kids' heads.

My son loves The Moomins, Postman Pat, all of the Julie Donaldson animations, The Wombles, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine and so on. He seems to really enjoy programmes that were made with real models in particular and these just seem so much more well made than Bluey, and have a gentler feel and better storytelling.

You need to understand Chillis back story for sleepytime. watch it all, honestly.

Honestly OP I think you've completley understood Bluey, have you even watched The Sign? You seem to have little understanding if you can compare it to Peppa Pig or Pingu! I think perhaps it is going over your head and your childs head, when they are older they may understand it. To see my 4 year olds absolute emotional breakdown over the Sign is to see real emotional depth. Watch that in a couple of years with your child, maybe you'd feel differently, Once you know the characters and their extensive backgrounds (looking at you Brandy). Complete different level to Bing, Pingu, Peppa Pig etc.

I've never seen Peppa Pig so I think another poster must have compared it to that.

I think we simply don't like the programme and I don't really get the fuss over it. Their voices went right through me.

Honestly if you have an issue with australian accents just watch it with subtitles, the writing is incredible. I cant imagine how anyone could not like Bluey as a complete leap for childrens tv.

Martymcfly24 · 02/01/2025 22:43

Fair enough if you don't like it I wouldn't force it if it's not your child's thing.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:43

In fact I cant believe anyone who liked moomins wouldnt like Bluey? How can that be!

Readmorebooks40 · 02/01/2025 22:44

It's chaotic because that's what life is like with young kids. That's why parents love it. It's so relatable. Your lo is probably still a bit young. Give it another year or two. It's so good.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:45

yes give it another year or two youl like it in time!

Rainbow450 · 02/01/2025 22:45

Oh my, I'd steer clear of dance mode then as that is utter bonkers - my favourite though.

You do need to start from episode 1 to appreciate it all and not just pick random ones as they do blend together with the finale of the sign.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:46

dance mode is epic though, Yes agreed, you need to wait till your child is older then watch from the start. Then see how you weep at The Sign!

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:47

Its not a finale though! Its just the pinnacle!

Bloom15 · 02/01/2025 22:51

My DS is 9 now but it was one of the shows I didn't mind or hate any of the characters.

I despised (not that you or anyone else asked 😂):
Bing from Bing
Norman from Fireman Sam
And everything about the Twirlywoos - the acting from the humans make me cringe

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 02/01/2025 22:52

Lots of people I know love it and keep telling me to watch it. Tbh, I'm in my 50s with teenaged children, a demanding job, elderly relatives that need looking after, horses, dogs, and various interests and commitments; the very last thing I want to do for the hour a day I have to sit down and watch TV is to watch telly made for small children. I'm sure it's bloody marvellous but I'm not interested, what with being a grown up and all.

BlueSilverCats · 02/01/2025 22:54

I love the poor little bug on the wall song, even if it makes me sad. Every. Single. Blooming.Time.

I'm seeing a lot of hate for Bing. I've never heard of this one and need to have a look now out of morbid curiosity!

I'm with you on this OP. I don't particularly hate it, but my kids aren't really interested in it (ages 2 and 5) and so I don't care about it much either. The episode with the music from Holst's The Planets is sweet, and I think the series' heart is kind of in the right place, but I'd never watch it without my kids or anything.

I think it might be so popular with adults because it's really a show about parenting just as much as a show for kids, but I also think the parents in it are unrealistically patient and fun all of the time, which is helped by the fact that they have a massive house, extended family nearby, and seemingly flexible and rewarding jobs.

My two really like Hey Duggee, Octonauts, Shaun the Sheep, and Maddie and her various amazing facts etc. I quite like all of those. Less keen on In the night garden (thankfully we've aged out of this), Peppa, Supertato, Spidey & Friends.

Martymcfly24 · 02/01/2025 23:09

Never got the whole Hey Duggee thing, my two never got into it at all.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/01/2025 23:10

Our family love Bluey - DC are 10 & 6 & we all happily watch it regularly.

I'm interested that so many dislike the Unicorse/Puppet episodes - see the way I read the episode is that Bluey is being annoying by not going bed/sleep & interrupting her parents childfree time. So whilst Chilli is trying read to Bluey (the activity Bluey wants) Bandit becomes Unicorse to interrupt Bluey's time so that she has to try & calm Unicorse down.

The first episode I saw was, I think, Spy Game (ep 13 of series 1) & I wasn't too impressed. But then I saw the next episode - Takeaway - & it resonated so much that I've been hooked ever since.

Moonpye · 02/01/2025 23:12

YAB massively U OP! Especially because you keep arguing that it's not good when you haven't given it a proper chance. It really is special. Agree that it's more suited to slightly older children. My 4 and 6 year olds weren't bothered a couple of years ago but are now obsessed. I think they especially appreciate the bluey/bingo dynamic. Have to say I feel nothing but lucky to live in a house full of screeching!

Bloom15 · 02/01/2025 23:33

@Snuffkintravellingsouth - Bing is a little shit!

LostTheMarble · 02/01/2025 23:35

Opened this thread with Lazarus Drug playing on my playlist as a coincidence (if you know you know). So I have to say utterly unreasonable. Just an incredible show.

AhBiscuits · 02/01/2025 23:36

There doesn't appear to be any mixed breed dogs on Bluey. Are different breeds not allowed to marry?

There are - Dougie is the little deaf dog in Turtle Boy - he is a Cavapoo.

Plus Rad & Frisky are different breeds; & Winston's Dad & Terriers Mum are in mixed breed couples.

TunnocksOrDeath · 02/01/2025 23:47

The episode where Bluey's mum is trying to get her own, aging, father to act sensible and look after himself is brilliant. I sent the link to my own Dad as a heavy hint.
There should be space in every home for horseplay and screeching, time for gentle reflection, and time for doing stuff that needs doing even if you don't want to. Bluey's family do it all, and what I really like is that sometimes it's the parents who learn the lesson. None of us is perfect.

ThatEllie · 03/01/2025 00:04

I watched a few and found it quite mediocre.

My issue with it is the choice of Australian cattle dogs. I mean, I get it, but having owned quite a few cattle dogs throughout my life they are notorious for being standoffish and not liking strangers, children, or strange children regardless of how they’re socialised. I’ve had several run-ins with clueless parents allowing their young child to gallop up to my current cattle dog in spite of her looking like a werewolf with every hair on her back standing on end at their approach. The most recent one asked me why they chose them for the cartoon if they’re not a friendly breed? No idea Sarah, you should ask them. Hmm

YANBU
It's quite dull.
