To not get the love for Bluey?

I think it will be an overwhelming wave of YABU based on how popular it is, but I just don't get the Bluey hype.

I was oblivious to it for years but lots of people were raving about it so I put it on one day for my 3 year old. We were both a bit bamboozled. He couldn't sit through an episode and wandered off. I found it very irritating- loud, whiny voices, irritating characters. One episode had the dad doing a mad sock puppet thing and the other episode was about kids on FaceTime. It was utter chaos and my son was nonplussed. I think because it was so chaotic and without any story to it. I find the colours really bland too.

It seems to be a hit with parents first, who put it on because of all the jokes they can appreciate that are over the kids' heads.

My son loves The Moomins, Postman Pat, all of the Julie Donaldson animations, The Wombles, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine and so on. He seems to really enjoy programmes that were made with real models in particular and these just seem so much more well made than Bluey, and have a gentler feel and better storytelling.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:15

jumpintheline · 02/01/2025 22:16

I love it! Also thought Bluey and Bingo were boys for ages 😅

The one I can’t stomach is Bing. Non stop moaning and whingeing!

Chillis mum didnt pass away? did i miss something?

It doesn't say it explicitly but in the episode Dragons Bluey doesn't recognize her when Chili draws her.

At the end of the episode Chili is talking to the horse (that represents her mum) and she says you can't stay can you.

I sobbed.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:18

Honestly the complexity of Bluey writing is amazing, it just genius, The sign is incredible I dont know how they will top that for for the movie.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:19

Oh my goodness Mcfly I didnt see that! see what I mean, theres so much you dont see! I never noticed! Oh chilli!

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:21

KarenAndSusanAreMyBesties · 02/01/2025 22:22

Yes and Chili also refers to her in the past tense.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:23

My kids are always asking for the complexties that they miss like Bucky grown up in The Sign is Bucky who destroyed Bandits drawing skill as a child, I dont think i can tell them this realisation though. One Nana will do for them.

Dd6 is autistic and absolutely adores Bluey so we have watched it many times. It has taught her so much about play and the language used has made life so much easier for eg if I'm going somewhere in the evening we call it a Daddy Put down and it's seen as a positive rather than missing me.
Her nickname is Muffin because she is just like her

It will always hold a place in my heart for that reason.

The increasing levels of smuggery in your posts have only reaffirmed my conclusion that this is a rage bait post!

I agree re: smugness. "Not something I'd want in my house". Dear me. I didn't realise the Moomins conferred social superiority. 😅

There are beautiful episodes, including children coping with their father being in the armed forces, a sister who is unable to conceive, an entirely silent one where the mum and Bluey battle against the rain and in the end, give up and enjoy it.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:25

Agree muffin is a perfect represention for us too!

Haveyouanyjam · 02/01/2025 22:26

Bluey is fabulous. You chose episodes that aren’t representative. My 3yo and 9yo love it. Unicorse is incredibly annoying but I think that’s the point - dad is a good loving emotionally mature dad but sometimes he’s just an unhelpful idiot. Makes him less perfect.

The sign is beautiful but you have to get to know the characters. The subtlety of the story telling is amazing.

Love Julia Donaldson too but the layers aren’t there in the same way.

MadmansLibrary · 02/01/2025 22:27

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:13

Chillis mum didnt pass away? did i miss something?

I think this is also why she's so protective of his Dad when he's having his heart problems. The episode where he sits on the jetty with her at the end and says "Nah, it was yesterday", chokes me up every time.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/01/2025 22:29

Julia Donaldson stuff can be a bit melancholy for me. I'm not ashamed to say I cried at Stick Man.
LOVE Zog though and the strong feminist message which doesn't come across as forced or contrived at all.

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:33

Honestly OP I think you've completley understood Bluey, have you even watched The Sign? You seem to have little understanding if you can compare it to Peppa Pig or Pingu! I think perhaps it is going over your head and your childs head, when they are older they may understand it. To see my 4 year olds absolute emotional breakdown over the Sign is to see real emotional depth. Watch that in a couple of years with your child, maybe you'd feel differently, Once you know the characters and their extensive backgrounds (looking at you Brandy). Complete different level to Bing, Pingu, Peppa Pig etc.

MorningBrew · 02/01/2025 22:35

Blue changed the way my husband parents. He is so much more playful with dc now. I'll be forever grateful.

I remember catching a glimpse of it for the first time ever on CBeebies and being confused by the colours, looking a bit retro?, thinking Bluey is the boy and Bingo is the girl (could they be more cliche with the colours...), confused by the dad who seemed to have a bit of temper cooking on the bbq... Very wrong first impression!

tonyhawks23 · 02/01/2025 22:35

See, I think like I blocked out the blaringly obvious now that I think about it fact that Chili has no Mum, you've blocked out the whole emotional side of it all! You need to re watch from the start all episodes finishing with The Sign in one day (skip the minisodes). Of course thats why Chili struggles so much!

GelatoPistacchio · 02/01/2025 22:36

I would watch Sleepytime (a parent-perspective episode) and Shadowlands (a child-perspective episode) for a fair reflection of what the series is like.

These episodes show you what people are going on about.

It might still not be for you but I think you should give the better episodes a shot.

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 22:37

@MadmansLibrary

I don't want screeching in my house and I've absolutely no idea why you think that means I think I'm socially superior. What a bizarre take.

Are there programmes you don't like? Are you trying to be "socially superior" by not liking them?

Apparently (according to a lot of posts on this thread) Bluey is "art", the writers are "genius" and people are "sobbing" at episodes. Yet I'm the snob for listing some examples of programmes I think are better.

You haven't watched the Sleepytime episode then. Has me in tears everytime, it's perfect.
