To not get the love for Bluey?

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 20:47

I think it will be an overwhelming wave of YABU based on how popular it is, but I just don't get the Bluey hype.

I was oblivious to it for years but lots of people were raving about it so I put it on one day for my 3 year old. We were both a bit bamboozled. He couldn't sit through an episode and wandered off. I found it very irritating- loud, whiny voices, irritating characters. One episode had the dad doing a mad sock puppet thing and the other episode was about kids on FaceTime. It was utter chaos and my son was nonplussed. I think because it was so chaotic and without any story to it. I find the colours really bland too.

It seems to be a hit with parents first, who put it on because of all the jokes they can appreciate that are over the kids' heads.

My son loves The Moomins, Postman Pat, all of the Julie Donaldson animations, The Wombles, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas the Tank Engine and so on. He seems to really enjoy programmes that were made with real models in particular and these just seem so much more well made than Bluey, and have a gentler feel and better storytelling.

We enjoy Bluey in this house and a couple of the episodes have been known to make me tear up a bit (Baby Race in particular) but I don’t get the mad love for it - it’s really good as kids tv goes but the near cult status it’s achieved is maybe a bit OTT. To be honest though, I was so pleased to be out of the Bing phase I’d have taken anything!

I absolutely hate the Unicorse episode (the sock puppet one) though, I just don’t get the point of it and why is the dad being such a dick? What’s it supposed to be teaching? The screeching in that one goes through me too. I don’t mind the FaceTime one, but I think you’d have to have some idea of who the various characters are for it to make much sense.

BertieBotts · 02/01/2025 21:28

The age range for it is 4-6.

But I agree. It's nice enough and I appreciate it as a well made kids' TV programme, but I can't get behind the OTT hype for it or adults making FB groups about it which seem to constantly be shown to me even though I'm not that interested.

The increasing levels of smuggery in your posts have only reaffirmed my conclusion that this is a rage bait post!

Smuggery?

I'm asking about a programme that is massively popular that I don't get the hype about. Some people on the thread aren't fans either.

What is there to be smug about not liking a programme? I've never watched it but everyone seems to absolutely pan Peppa Pig. Is that a programme that it's ok to dislike but not Bluey?

The colour palate is deliberate, it is in yelow & blue tones that dogs can see.

Really? Surely this is just made up for those FB groups...

xyz111 · 02/01/2025 21:30

The facetalk one is funny once you know the character's personality. My son was older when he got into it, so maybe your DS is too young. And if he doesn't like it, who cares. Everyone is different.

Notrynajudge · 02/01/2025 21:31

YANBU I hate it to be honest, I find it cringeworthy.

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 21:31

pjani · 02/01/2025 21:02

Your DC is too young - way too much dialogue for a 3yo imo. Try again when they are 5 and you’ll both enjoy it a lot more I’d say.

I put it on based on a lot of friends with children the same age raving about it. They all have lots of Bluey clothes, pyjamas, teddies etc. I didn't realise it wasn't for that age group.

The way the adults talk about it though, I do get the impression it's more for them than the kids.

Watch Blippi and Peppa Pig, and then reevaluate Bluey.

Of ‘current’ stuff it’s one of the better ones around.

I still prefer classics though.

I have never seen Peppa Pig but I've definitely heard enough about Blippi to absolutely avoid that altogether!

We have a real Bluey! ( Australian Blue Heeler) . She is our 3rd and other 2 puppies before the Bluey hype. Little children come running screaming “ Bluey , Bluey” . She is a nice dog and is good with children.. even though we have none. We gave also noticed a lot more healers around… so pester power must be working!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/01/2025 21:34

My partner loves Bluey more than the kids do 😂. I can take it or leave it. Some episodes don't draw me in, some do. I have shed a tear at the occasional episode.
Agree that Hey Duggee is amazing.
My son also loves Thomas (he's nearly 4) and the 1 year old loves Bing, Teletubbies and Night Garden.
Cocomelon is banned in this house.

Quicknamechangequery · 02/01/2025 21:35

Cricket is the most beautiful episode out there. Tears every time. We have three dc ages 12 to 2 and we all stop and watch it at times. Try again!! 😀

Snuffkintravellingsouth · 02/01/2025 21:35

Booksandwine80 · 02/01/2025 21:17

Don’t watch it then 🙄

I don't.

There’s an old video of Blippi before he was Blippi going around the internet… I haven’t seen it but apparently he’s taking a dump on his mate’s chest or something the dirty fucker

In which case you’ve got totally the wrong reference frame to appreciate Bluey’s place in the kids tv hierarchy.

It’s not a patch on pingu. It’s bliss compared to most other current stuff.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/01/2025 21:36

I actually like Peppa Pig that can be quite funny at times I just hate the way George goes "dineyyyy-saur"

lavendarwillow · 02/01/2025 21:36

I think a lot of older children like Bluey as well, it's a relaxing watch. My 10 year old enjoys watching it with his brother, although he would never admit it. Peter Rabbit is another good one.

SquawkerTexasRanger · 02/01/2025 21:37

I’m with you OP, Bluey is annoying as fuck. The parents trying to be cool and mates with the kids is very irritating. Plus all the screeching

Nc54684 · 02/01/2025 21:37

YABU some of the episodes are absolutely heart tugging, I’ve teared up a few times!!
you haven’t watched the best ones or enough to make a judgement call. I’d happily watch them all again and again (and I do) my 4 year old and 1 year olds favourite programme

Exasperateddonut · 02/01/2025 21:38

We are a very waldorfy home educating family. Massive love of moomins and all things gentle, outdoorsy and natural. We have no live tv in the house. No kinds YouTube.

Bluey is a firm firm favourite. Calypso is an incredible Montessori teacher. The lessons about life are really child level and our home is full of discussions arising from Bluey episodes. At first I wondered what the hell it was about but after a few episodes I really got it. Then again, I felt the same about Sarah and duck to start with- our home would not be complete without it now!

AhBiscuits · 02/01/2025 21:41

Yabu.
I've cried every time I've watched Baby Race, Cricket and the Sign without fail.

peachgreen · 02/01/2025 21:41

Oh c’mon – “we don’t have a telly” “my son likes gentler, better-made programmes” “all that screeching just isn’t representative of my life”…

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/01/2025 21:42

SHE not he

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/01/2025 21:42

My almost two year old loves it it's very wholesome

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 02/01/2025 21:42

Who hurt you OP?!?!

That's a shame if that's the case for current kids TV. There are plenty of classics to choose from though. My son loves Moomins, Old Bear Stories, The Wombles, Thomas the Tank Engine, Postman Pat etc. All excellent.

There are some great quality programmes still being made it seems. He loves all the Julia Donaldson adaptations, and I think they're lovely. He also loves The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Mog's Christmas. He's also currently full of facts he's learnt from Andy's Wild Adventures.
